January 23, 201115 yr Damage soaking only comes in when a monster can hit 200+, under 200 damage and damage soaking has no effect. Against most monsters defense bonus is always best. As covered above damage soaking only effects hits over 200, and then the soak is only applied to the damage tht is over 200.So even on the best gear with like 20% soak a hit of 990 damage would only 158 damage would be soaked, leaving a hit of 832. With such small effect it is generally better to go for better def to avoid big hits. January 23, 201115 yr Soak comes into play on Jad, GWD, corp, kq, dks (very little on all but Jad and corp). Some other monsters may also hit over 200 (mithril dragons) but you'd usually protect pray against their melee attacks anyway. So yeah, soak isn't very valuable, though it can matter quite a bit in pvp versus a maul for example.
