Various errors

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, I've been having some trouble with my computer lately and have been getting several problems with my computer overall, and some help and advice would be very much appreciated.

Problem 1: My connection is sometimes great, and then minutes later, I'll get repeated "errors" and it will say things like "my connection timed out". I find this strange because just a few months ago I bought myself a Belkin wireless N+ router. What is causing this to happen? If its worth anything, I'm almost always browsing on google chrome, and have windows vista 32 bit.

Problem 2: My disk drive no longer "reads" disks. I'll pop a disk in to try and install something/play a game that I've already installed and nothing happens, my disk drive just sits there. How can I solve this problem? I'm hoping to upgrade my operating system to windows 7 soon and the idea of not being able to use the disk once I purchase it is not very appealing.

Problem 3: What would happen to my computer if I upgraded to windows 7? I'm kind of hoping that it will almost start my computer from scratch again, because I have a lot of junk and errors on my current computer. My question is, what will happen to my computer?

Sorry if this is a lot to ask, but I'm really stuck, if you need information that I have not provided just post it and I'll try to give it to you.

Thanks!

1) Sounds like you are losing signal and/or have a router tht doesnt support the modern broadcast standards the adapter uses.

2) It died replace it.

3) Depends how u do it. It'll let you do an upgrade or a clean install. Upgrade will save stuff, clean install will wipe the lot

1 - Not sure, does the router reconnect itself after, or do you have to manually reconnect?

2 - Buy a new one off Newegg, they go for like $20, or get a Blu-Ray combo drive for $90

3 - I'd go for a format and install, just remember to back up all the files you want.

About my problem with the router, when these random disconnection spikes occur, my computer still says that its connected to the internet, it just can't load any pages.

Any suggestions as to what hard drive I should buy? I would like it to be decent at least, but without breaking the bank. My hard drive is one of the few pieces of my computer that I haven't replaced at some point, so I'm very inexperienced when it comes to shopping for them, is it sort of a "one size fits all" deal, or would I need to make sure to get the right size?

No need to get a new HDD, just a new DVD/BluRay player. If you're going DVD, buy the cheapest one that is 24x and has at least a 2mb cache. For a BR drive, you will want to get a 6x speed one, as seek times are slow on BD-ROMs.

Does your disc drive spin if you put a cd in it from outside windows?

Yeah it spins and makes noise and everything, it just decides not to do anything about it. And if I put a disk in and try to activate a program, it will say "please insert disk to activate program"

Sounds like it's broken, but maybe check to see if it is hooked up properly inside the case.

Nice sig btw.
