I've been using a chaotic rapier + dragon defender to kill Tormented Demons, but would a chaotic longsword be better? And how does the maul fare?

Rapier will be the fastest kills. LS and Maul are for easier soul split flashing as well as the maul has the bonus of one less click (normally used to equip the ddef) when switching attack styles.

CLS and maul only become better when you have too many switches/actions to reasonably keep your rapier attack speed consistent. If you're using a crossbow (which you shouldn't), CLS becomes easiest to use. When you're using a handcannon or Karil's xbow (which you should), maul becomes better.

I personally use the CLS. I've tried the rapier and it doesn't even compare to the CLS. My kills were much slower with rapier + I've anti crashed many void + rapier users using my CLS + Karil's. :P

The problem is that you'd have to be pretty superhuman to consistently control a steel titan, manage void helms, soul split flash, juggle potions/drops, switch between a two-handed ranged weapon and a one-handed melee weapon w/ defender, darklight, etc for at least twenty minutes (single overload trip) without losing any time on your rapier hits. The same goes for using a unicorn while switching between rigour/piety, albeit a little less-so.

 

EDIT: A basic rule-of-thumb is that if you're losing attack turns on your rapier, you need to be using a slower weapon or else train yourself to switch perfectly for prolonged periods of time. Another rule-of-thumb is that anywhere a CLS is better than a rapier, a maul is better than a CLS (not entirely true, but true in most cases). More-so when you consider that the best ranged weapons are 2h.

I use the same thing for tds rapier+ddef is great might try using a karils bow to speed up kills i find it most efficent (second to handcannon but handcannons blowing up mid trip sucks)
