Danqazmlp
Me, my brother and mum have decided to pool our money to buy my dad a new laptop for his Birthday in august. His current laptop is around 6 years old and is starting to go rather slow. I really don't know where to start looking so I'm looking for some suggestions on which to buy or where to look. He rarely uses things other than general internet browsing. Being 50+ he doesn't play games so it doesn't need great specifications. We are looking for something between £200 and £300. We are quite keen on buying a refurbished Laptop too as they are usually much better for the price. Want to be my friend? Folding
I'd highly recommend the Samsung NC250 Netbook, which my dad has for his work, as it's quite cheap, sleek, and does the job of internet exploring quite well. There are similar models (though not the model he actually has) to it to be found here, and John Lewis is ridiculously fast at delivering.
Danqazmlp
I forgot to add that I think he would prefer a large screen. Not 100% sure if that is a large requirement, I'll try to ask him that tomorrow. Want to be my friend? jasignhagj
I'd suggest against a netbook because of the tiny screen and low resolution. If he has to do any work on it, it will be a pain. http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Product/50518/Samsung-Laptop-RV510-A0CUK-Dual-Core-T3500 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-msi-cr630-004uk-led-amd-dual-core-p320-4gb-320gb-dvdrw-hdmi-webcam-w7hp Either of these laptops look good. The second one is more expensive, but check each site's shipping fees too. If you have any brick and mortar electronics stores in your area, post their sites and I can check there. Danqazmlp
Do you mean places like PC world? I think that is the only thing we have nearby. We do have an Argos too, if they sell decent Laptops. jasignhagj
Yeah, any store where you physically walk in and get the laptop, so you don't have to pay shipping or worry about RMAs for stuck pixels or shipping damage. I'll check those store's sites and see if they have any good deals on.
Mylez
You can't go wrong with popular models such as Acer Aspire and Toshiba Satelite.. They are cheaper and fairly well made for the price. I've got an Acer Aspire 5742 which only cost around £380 (though you wouldn't need the spec, i3, 3gb, HD graphics etc)
Doomster
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/250962 - Looks quite good in spec (not a refurb, but a lot cheper than many other places with this model) From other sites, it appears the 4GB RAM (there is a cheaper one with 3GB) is 2x 2GB - not 100% sure if the mobile version of this chipset is dual channel.Radeon HD4250 has more graphics performance than GMA4500M But yes, there is a lot to be said for having a high street store to go back to
