If not the democracy itself, then it is probably conected to something else that is helping.Having a high standard of living helps democracy, not the other way around (neccesarily) :P. For example if you don't have a car/bus/train, it's harder to go out there and vote. Especially if you can't afford to lose a days (or more) worth of wages walking there. Democracy is more of a luxury. It's really popular with the people (and the people do have an influence in a dictatorship, just not as officially or directly). You could see democracy as a sort of inescapable state of goverment. It won't vote to abolish itself (political & bureaucratic inertia) and (pretty much by definition) it includes everyone, basically reducing the chance of a revolution (that leads to not-democracy) to zero.
