Dear Tip.It Community,

I have seen many a player with some sort of dash or hyphen at the beginning of their RuneScape Display Name. Ones such as these: and, -. Now, I know that's not right because the rules of a display name clearly state that the name MUST start with a letter and end with one. So, how is this at all possible? Is it a bug? Are these people abusing a bug? Should I then report them?

It could be:

A) Force name change from Jagex

B) Jagex has started allowing it

C) New players start with strings of numbers and letters as name.. not sure if hyphens are used here

Maybe an alt code? Doesn't really matter...

If you want to know how they did it, just ask them.

Otherwise, they aren't causing any harm, no need to report them.

It's possible that at one time you could start your display name with a dash/hyphen, but Jagex has since decided to disallow it. Same thing happened with Tumblr where you could make your url -anythingyouwant.tumblr.com, but it caused so many problems with browser url recognition they no longer allow it, but didn't require existing accounts to change their url if they already had a starting dash.

I expect this is similar to how suomi has multiple spaces in his name.

Yeah, you can create an account with multiple spaces, but I don't think Jagex allows us to change our names to something like what Suomi has.

Not sure if this has changed recently.
