Difficulty connecting to wireless

Featured Replies

Rewriting this totally as I've worked through most of my original question though still haven't had any luck.

The crux of the issue is that my computer won't connect to the network wirelessly even though all other devices (an ipod and a laptop) can and the option to connect is available, it simply tries to and fails, bringing up the standard troubleshooting menu.

I know that it isn't incorrect security/encryptions/password entry as I copied these to a flash drive from the working laptop onto my computer. I've also deleted the old network from the wireless connections.

I know that it isn't the router because other devices can connect to the router and my computer will connect if plugged in via an ethernet cable.

I know that it isn't the wireless adapter on the computer because It was working until I moved and it wasn't damaged in the move because I brought the old router with me and my computer could wirelessly connect to that without issue (though it immediately took me to the router page as that network isn't enabled for internet here).

So, what else could it be? Please help.

My first reaction would be to wonder how far apart the router and computer are? It doesn't matter if everything else can connect from roughly the same position, I find that wireless ranges tend to fluctuate pretty wildly. The only time I have ever repeatedly gotten the sort of issue I think your describing (where the connection just keeps failing even though your computer can normally see the network) is with my laptop connecting to a router that must have been 150ft away, through two exterior walls, one of which might have been solid concrete. I was in about the last 4 ft of range. 8 if I established a connection and then moved it. That connection would often refuse to establish, and often dropped me.

Assuming everything is all in the same house, it is possible that there are an usual number of obstacles between you and the position of your computer. You might try moving the router to a different part of its room, or even just moving the computer to the same room and trying there to establish if this is even the problem.

Install inSSIDer and see how strong the wifi signal is on your computer, that will show you if it's weak and a possible cause of your problems.

There could be a bunch of nearby wifi networks on the same frequency for example or the reciever in your computer might be pants.

I moved the router into the same room as the computer and it still couldn't connect wirelessly. I also downloaded inSSIDer and it shows no channel overlap with the neighbouring wifi connections and an RSSI of around -85, varying a couple of digits either way. Fortunately I have been able to tether (I think this is the right word) my ipod which is able to connect so I can use the internet on my desktop as long as I have my ipod also plugged in. Thanks for attempting to assist though.

Looks like the problem might be with your actual wireless adapter then. Have you tried updating the wireless drivers?
