Ixpren
After an enormous amount of searching, chatting and posting, it seems I'm the only one on the entire planet with this problem. Now I'm looking for advice from anyone off-planet  In IE, Runescape crashes about every 10 minutes, if I'm lucky it lasts THAT long. The crash report from Micro$oft says it is due to a problem with "Morgan Stream Switcher" and that I should contact Morgan Multimedia. Well, I looked into their site, it is apparently an audio component, not sure if it would be classified CODEC or driver or what, but it is described as something that can instantly switch between multiple audio streams, and they cite the example: such as multiple languages. This same problem is happening on two separate computers with totally different hardware - my desktop PC and also my notebook computer. The only commonality I can find that would have anything to do with Audio, and likely, stream switcher, is the fact that I have a ton of DivX CODECs on both, including things like ffdshow, AC3 audio, xVid, etc. Perhaps something in there is responsible. Over to Firefox: naturally there's no audio in FF, everyone already knows about that. However, firefox is doing two things that are really ticking me off: 1) every so often, not nearly as often as IE, but every couple of days, FF will crash in RS. 2) Whenever an ad manages to get through FF's Adblock plugin, it switches the frame focus. This has the following ramifications: If I am using the arrow keys to change POV, it stops responding and I have to click somewhere in the game to get focus back to that frame. If I am having a conversation, and I hit the BACKSPACE key to erase a character (I'm fanatical with spelling), guess what: that's right, the BACKSPACE key is a shortcut to the BACK command. Since the focus has been shifted to a regular web frame, my browser takes me back to the RS main page and I'm dumped from the session!!! This is a nuisance at best when I'm just doing ordinary tasks or chatting, and a nightmare if I am in the middle of a battle. I have not found any solutions, advice, or even anyone who has experienced EITHER of these issues! But I'm left right now with having to decide which severe problems I'd rather live with. Any help at all would be really appreciated. PS - I have emailed both Jagex and Morgan MM about these problems, nobody even so much as responded. Since I emailed them many weeks ago, I think I can reasonably assume they don't give a darn. Please, help!
dwarfie76
Have you tried the standalone runescape client you can download from the runescape website?
Ixpren
Yes I have. And of course, since all it does is wrap IE, I get the same Morgan Stream Switcher crash as within IE.
dwarfie76
Tried playing in low detail?
Ixpren
I have not, but I cannot imagine anything whatsoever that such an attempt would do for either problem. Technically there is nothing about the detail quality of the applet that would change the CODEC it uses for audio, nor the way Firefox responds to advertisements loading in other frames. Just for kicks, I'll try it anyway.
Ixpren
Well well, it seems that sound is disabled in low-detail mode. I never knew that. Ok so now I've worked around the audio problem, basically by having no audio, but weird thing is I still had the issue with having to click the game occasionally to get focus back. I haven't been booted though, and hopefully won't but I'm going to just test it next time I lose focus on the game, I will hit backspace and see if it throws me back to main menu. I am using the stand-alone client, and I reduced my screen res to 800x600. Finally, I scroll the game console slightly so I am left with a perfect full-screen game with no ads visible. Mercifull
Ok most of what you asked has been solved before on the forums, but since you posted such a detailed help request im not simply going to tell you to search the boards. The MSS site had a download to install the latest version. Perhaps try this. Its only really useful for DVD's to switch between different audio tracks in the same movie clip like on DVD's, i see no reason why runescape would be using this? As for the firefox issues, these are perhaps a bit simple to work out. Firstly, you are right... sound doesnt work. Theres not really anything you can do about that, Jagex have chosen MSJava only compatable code, instead of the universal and far superior SUN Java, to make the music work. Andrew posted in Bugzilla (4/4/2005) that they were going to be working on this but as yet it still hasnt been fixed. Secondly you ask about the adframe messing up your window. Thats not really a firefox issue, again this is just a bad was of loading the adverts that Jagex/Ad agencies use to serve adverts. It may be possible that it is the natrue of the Ad-block extension itself that is causing this. When i used to play runescape this never happened to me and i didnt use adblock. If this really annoys you then HOSTS block http://advert.runescape.com or perhaps go P2P. Lastly is the backspace issue. While it is a new feature in Firefox 1.1 its by far not a unique feature and is found in ever major browser around. It is however easy to disable. You can either do it using this tiny tool or you can use this extension to get more options to the shortcut keys. Then you can disable it. I hope i helped with at least some of your issues. Ixpren
Thanks for such a detailed reply! Ok first, yes one of the first things I did was install the latest Morgan Stream Switcher. I figured, like you did, that although I cannot imagine what RS would need from it, maybe mine is corrupt, incomplete or out of date. But installing the latest MSS didn't help. Interesting adea about the ads, that it could be the adblock plugin itself. But unfortunately it has happened from within the RS client too! I didn't mean to imply the Firefox per se was what I had a problem with, just the fact that the backspace has a dangerous nature when you are typing within a game. About the host blocking, I will try that. As per a previous post I mentioned that as of now I'm ok with using the RS client in low-detail mode. I actually got a popup ad from it, though, which really ticked me off. Micro$oft CLAIMS to have made a decent popup blocker, but it just isn't true; one of their greatest business tactics is, pardon the expression, pimping out all users of IE to adverts. Websites know that their ads will be seen more often with IE, so they code strictly for IE. You see Firefox is an end-user's friend, but a web-advertisers enemy. Invert that statement for IE. Anyway, like I said, thanks for the info, you definitely addressed them in a very good manner. I am ok now using the RS client, and a bit more tweaking should get rid of the popup ads. They only show up once in a while anyway. Peace, all.
