Being a Runescape community forum I gather that you all play Runescape :)

OK, I posted this on another Runescape forum but others might want to read it to, well a few things first.

Playing the game.

Jagex have on their website a minimum hardware requirements for playing Runescape. Being a small downloaded Java web-based game these requirements are very low and infact computers standard about 6-7 years ago would be OK for playing Runescape.

What about software requirements?

I'm going to make the assumption that the majority of Runescape users of this forum are Windows based (because they are). Java java java! Thats right, you need a Java Machine to load the Java Applets to play Runescape. Normally this is a small download which can be done through an Active-X object (the Yes/No "do you want to install this object" windows you get when loading Internet sites).

For most of you this installation comes with your Operating System (your version of Windows) or you have already downloaded a Java Machine when prompted at runescape.com (this occurs the very first time you load a game world, thats the Yes/No box that popped up!).

Even though you can play Runescape fine I'ld still suggest getting a different Virtual Machine than what comes with a normal Operating System or the one that Jagex reccommends to download from there website (the active-x control window). Now,

To find the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine do the following:

  • [*:37q59ymv]Go to
www.google.com

[*:37q59ymv]Search for msjavx86 (this will be an executable file and upwards of 4mb in size)

[*:37q59ymv]Download this file and install onto your machine

[*:37q59ymv]You may be required to restart your computer after the installation

Bingo, your Runescape should now should be performing at the best of its ability (the best that it can on your computer with your Internet speed)

What about hackers? I hear of alot of people being hacked.

OK, this is a very loosely used term in Runescape. I've yet to come accross a "hacker" on Runescape. (Someone that gains access to the Runescape servers and gets or changes information that relates to the running of the game and/or its game data). 99% of the time people claim to have been hacked is from their own fault, alot of the time through trust of friends.

Keyloggers, yup, you all know what they are. Keyloggers are a program that captures data/messages sent from your keyboard to your CPU, in other words, keyloggers record every single keypress you make.

So how would I get a keylogger and how would I stop myself from getting a keylogger?

Easy! Don't download executable files from people over MSN, IRC and other Instant Messaging programs like these. You can NEVER know what your "friend" is really sending you. The safest place to download executable files from are large certified websites who hold a history of being legal. For example, I would have no hesitation in referring someone to download executable files from a website like download.com. I would not referr anyone to download files over Instant Messanging programs like MSN or IRC.

Ok you say, but what is an executable file?

An executle file on a windows system normally holds the file extentions [Caution: ExecutableFile], .com or .bat. Although, there are scripting language files that can be compiled into an executable file, for example, .vbs or .wsh, both scripting executables.

I'm still a little scared that my computer might get hacked.

This is completely normal, there are alot of intelligent computer users out there with only interests in learning as much about computers as they can at the cost of others. Two words, antivirus, firewall.

What is AntiVirus?

The title is exactly that, software that fight to stop your computer from being infected by viruses and trojans, and other evil things!

I would reccommend to all Windows computer users who don't have any AntiVirus to get some, and I would also reccommend you buy it! Free AntiVirus is NOT as good as paid AntiVirus. Put it this way, if the free AntiVirus software was really any good it would be on the shelves already!

McAffee or Symantec. One or the other, I have used both systems and they are both great. I haven't used any other paid AntiVirus so I can't completely comment on their standard but what I do know about these two products is that they are very strong, consistently up-to-date and easy to use. You can get cheap deals on these two products at the very start of a new year when the next years product comes out. Call me cheap but I find that spending the $50 less for last years product not too bad. It's still better than any free AntiVirus software on the internet.

Get a Firewall! Both these AntiVirus packages can come with a software Firewall so I would highly reccommend you get the packages that have the Firewall in them or at least buy the Firewall extra if you can't get a package combined!

What is a Firewall?

A Firewall is a software wall between your computer and the internet. It monitors and controls all in and out going traffic. Once your computer is setup properly with a Firewall the chances of a newbie "hacker" (like the hackers on Runescape) from gaining access to your machine is, well, extremely low!

I think I have a virus on my Internet Explorer, its doing weird things!

Spyware. Software that advertising companies use to take over parts of your Browsers to display websites/banners of their own instead of your normal settings. They can add toolbar's to your Internet Explorer, change your home page and make your Internet Explorer popup advertisements at any time.

The best way to combat this (rs style!) is to get Spyware removal tools. I can only reccommend 1 product on the market for this, and it is free (ok so I use SOME free products).

Spybot: Search and Destroy

Its got a Matrixy feel to it dun it?

You can find this by clicking, here, or search for it on www.download.com.

In the advanced mode of this tool you can run a scan over your computer and it will search for known spyware. You can gain free updates every now and then and overall it helps ALOT to keeping spyware off your computer so you will not be annoyed when surfing!

This tool is great, it gets rid of spyware, but it keeps coming back when I restart!

This is probably because there is an executable file (like keyloggers use) on your computer that is starting itself up when you start your computer! Sometimes Spybot- Search and Destroy will pick up on this and remove these automatic startup programs, but its almost impossible for any software to be 100% up-to-date on all spyware!

OK, so you have an executable file on your computer thats restarting this spyware when you startup your computer, well, lets remove it!

Again I'll persume that you are a Windows based user (if you aren't then chances are the spyware doesn't even work on your machine (unix/mac).

Easy as 1, 2 ,3:

  • [*:37q59ymv]Click on the Start Menu, then select Run.

[*:37q59ymv]Type in "regedit", then select Ok. (This will bring up the Windows Registry, WARNING: Do not edit anythign in the Windows Registry unless you know what you are doing, any changes you make in here can [bleep] up your computers settings! Even make it completely unuseable!)

[*:37q59ymv]Now you want to navigate through the dropdown folders to:

    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"

[*:37q59ymv]Now, this will list all the programs your computer is set to run when your computer starts up.

What your looking for is a [Caution: ExecutableFile] entry which will probably have a strange KeyName that you do not recognise. For example, a Bargin Buddy spyware entry might look like:

    Name Type Data

    Buddy REG_SZ C:\Windows\System32\barginb[Caution: ExecutableFile]

It's not always easy to tell if an entry is supposed to be there or not. I could write a list of normal entries for Windows but its different on all versions so it would be a novel! All I can really suggest is to send me an email or PM with the list of the entries you have and I can tell you if one is a Spyware. If you find one that your pretty sure is a spyware, then:

[*:37q59ymv]Write down the path to where the file is on your computer, most Spyware will be in the Windows or Program Files directories.

[*:37q59ymv]Delete that entry from the registry.

    [*:37q59ymv]Restart your computer

[*:37q59ymv]Run Spybot- Search and Destroy again, then

[*:37q59ymv]Navigate to where the Spyware file is and delete it.

Ok, this process might seem a little daunting to some people, but its OK! You are more than welcome to add my MSN and I'll gladly do my best to direct you through this process to clear up your machine.

Well people, thats it for my second edition. Just to wrap up on what we covered, basically:

  • [*:37q59ymv]Identifying Spyware

    [*:37q59ymv]Disabling, then

    [*:37q59ymv]Removing

Whats all this talk I've heard about updates and security patches? I'm not sure what they are or where to get them from.

Windows Update, this should be your first source for all security updates for your computer.

I sugest that everyone that hasn't done so do the following:

  • [*:37q59ymv]Go to the windows update, there is a shortcut in your Start Menu or you can reach it by clicking
here.

[*:37q59ymv]Click on the Scan for Updates link then wait for it to finish loading.

[*:37q59ymv]On the left click the "Security updates and Service packs" link.

[*:37q59ymv]Go through the list of updates and make sure that EVERY Windows Operating System security update, Internet Explorer security update, Internet Explorer patch and Windows operating system Service pack are selected. Other updates are optional and I wouldn't suggest downloading them unless you use the software that the patches are for.

[*:37q59ymv]Once your happy with the selections click the Review and Install updates link.

Double check the list again, then if your happy click the Install Now button.

These downloads could take awhile if you are running on Dialup but are EXTREMELY important for the security of your computer.

My computer keeps coming up with a timer counting down from 1:00, it says "NT AUTH SYSTEM SHUTDOWN"

You have the W32.Blaster.Worm.D Virus. This is a very common virus to get if you do not patch with the Blaster Worm update on your Windows XP Home/Pro machine before you connect to the internet.

What you need to do is firstly. When you see the message open up Command Prompt. You can do this by clicking on the Start Menu then selecting Run. Type in "cmd" then, Ok. You will now see the Command Prompt window. Type in "shutdown -a". This will abort the shutdown message. But your computer will be a little affected by the virus because already some needed services/processes have shutdown.

Now you need to get onto the Microsoft website, you can get there by clicking here. Go to the Downloads page and search for "W32.Blaster.Worm.D" or check in the most common downloads. You need to get this patch installed on your computer as soon as possible.

Straight after that you must get the Blaster Removal Tool. I'm not sure if Microsoft have that on their website but Symantec do. So go to Symantec webste, you can do that by clicking here. Now you'll need to get into the downloads section. I think you get to that through the Security Response button on the top bar. Do a search for Blaster Worm or W32.Blaster.Worm, or something similar. What you are looking for is the Blaster Worm Removal Tool. It should be pretty easy to find.

You need to run this tool on your machine, this will clear off any Blaster virus you have. Having already applied the Blaster Worm patch, now just reboot and connect back to the internet and you should be back to normal.

I keep getting an error that exits some of my programs, "Application is closing down, your computer is out of virtual memory"

A quick fix for Windows XP users.

Right click My Computer, Select Properties. On the Advanced tab click the first Settings button in the Performance heading.

In this menu, under the Visual Effects tab, select the "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer" radio button then click Ok to all windows.

This will let Windows XP decide how much virtual memory it needs. This is the Microsoft reccommended way of managing your Virtual Memory.

What are specs?

Specs, short for specifications are exactly what they say they are.

When someone asks for your specs, they are basically asking for the details/specifications about your computer. This means things like your processor, cpu, ram, rom, sound, and video card.

How Do I Find Out My Computers Specs?

Click Start > Control Panel > System. This brings you to system properties, already set on the general tab. At the bottom of the screen, you can see a bit of basic info about your computer. Also clicking Start > Control Panel > Display > Apperance allows you to see your monitor type, and sometimes your graphics card. Clicking Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager allows you to see the different hardware installed in each category in your computer.

Short Terms You May or May Not Wish To Know:

CPU - Central Processing Unit

ROM - Read Only Memory

RAM - Random Access Memory

ISP - Internet Service Provider

AGP - Accelerated Graphics Port

PCI - Peripheral Component Interconnect

LoL - Laugh Out Loud

Lmao - Laughing my ... off

Rof - Rolling On the floor (usually followed by lmao)

Reformatting Your Computer

Reformatting your computer can be quite tricky, and should only be done if you know EXACTLY what you are doing.

Before you Reformat:

You may want to save any wanted files to disk, but only if necessary.

Also make sure you have and know where all your driver disks are, and your windows xp cd. You may also want to create a backup of the whole c drive, just incase.

Begin:

Pop in your windows xp cd, and press F8 to boot from it. You will then be asked what you wish to do with the cd, where you will click the advanced option.

You will then be shown a screen, and there will be a box. Inside of the box will say c:\whatever your comp name was. Highlight and delete this partition.

Create a new partition on C:\ once again.

Now it will want to format the partition, and will give you four options. Either one will do fine.

After some long waited time, windows xp will finally begin to install.

Follow the on screen instructions, and you should be fine

You are now done formatting your computer!! Arn't you happy

Also remember, to prevent this from re-occuring in the future (reformatting is such a pain) you can do the following :

Download Ad-aware to remove spyware from the computer. A scan should be done weekly, and once a month in safe mode.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Purchase Norton Antivirus 2001, 2003, or 2004. Don't bother for 2002, it can be a pain, due to some bugs in its system. Do a weekly scan, or 3 a month.

Local Hardware and Computer Stores

If you are short on cash, download AVG virus scanner, or use trendmicro.

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Update all drivers from time to time. This can be done by clicking

Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Update Driver.

Make sure your computer is up to date with windows update.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

And last, make sure to never download any hacks, cracks, serials, keyloggers, keygens etc. In my opinion, Kazaa should be renamed to Hacker Central, so just watch out. Small files like music cannot harm you too bad, but it still can contain spyware etc. So I would not reccomend it.

Runescape won't load for me, I've tried all the Java VM's, it just won't work!

In Internet Explorer go to the Tools menu then select Internet Options. See the image below and untick any Sun Java or Microsoft VM options that are selected, (there might be 3-4 Java option boxes). So just make sure they are all unticked.

img_ie.gif

Now, reboot your machine.

After you have rebooted go to http://www.google.com and do a search for msjavx86, it will be an executable file. Download this file and install it. This is the most stable Microsoft Java Virtual Machine version. Although you may have tried this file already, still do this complete process because Sun Java and other Java VM versions can null this install if those options are not unticked.

Once it is installed reboot your machine.

Get back online and load up your runescape client. You should be able to load up a server normally now on the default java.

Ad-aware is also good for removing spywayre.

You didn't mention that keyloggers can be contained in simple files such everyday bank pictures and even .html files if they are transferred over a http:// protocol.

Download.com has many downloads which contain spyware and ad-ware. Many.

The link to windows update 'click here' isn't bbcoded. http://www.windowsupdate.com ;)

Overall, not a bad guide :)

Oh yeah:

Ok, this process might seem a little daunting to some people, but its OK! You are more than welcome to add my MSN or maybe another admin and I'll gladly do my best to direct you through this process to clear up your machine.
You said you copied this from another site, so it's cool, but you might want to edit this ;)

NOTE!!! Formatting your computer wipes ALL files from your hard drive !!! This should be used as a last resort, and you should think VERY carefully about what files you might lose if you do this... there is NO going back!

Well seeing as so many people are wondering how to reformat these days, here is a simple step by step guide. This was originally posted in the FAQ section, but it is not getting seen, as many still wonder how to do it.

Disclaimer : I am not responsible for any errors done during the reformatting process. From my personal experience, this is how to reformat a computer under Windows 95/98/Xp. If anyone would like to write a guide for me to include in this for any other operating systems, feel free, and pm it to me. Thanks.

Reformatting Your Computer In Windows XP

Before you Reformat:

You may want to save any wanted files to disk, but only if necessary.

Also make sure you have and know where all your driver disks are, and your windows xp cd. You may also want to create a backup of the whole c drive, just incase.

Reformatting Your Computer In Windows 95/98

Before you reformat:

First you will want to create a boot disk. To do this, insert a blank floppy into the a drive, and go to start>controlpanel>add/remove programs>create startupdisk. Follow the onscreen instructions and you should be fine.

Begin:

Now to begin, you want to get into MS DOS. To do this click start>menu>shutdown>restart in ms dos.

When it restarts, you will be at a black screen, which reads :

C:\Windows\

After that second \ type CD, or CD\

That will go down, and you will see entered now C:\

Type Format C:

You will then proceed to install. At the new screen, type whatever the system is of your new computer (your choice)

Now you will restart your computer, and put your previously made windows boot disk in the a drive.

While your computer now boots up from this floppy disk, insert your windows 98 cd into the drive. This will prompt you to startup with the cd, which is what you want to do.

While the cd is installing windows, remove the floppy. Follow the on screen instructions and you should be just fine.

Notes for future use:

Purchase Norton Antivirus 2001, 2003, or 2004. Don't bother for 2002, it can be a pain, due to some bugs in its system. Do a weekly scan, or 3 a month.

If you are short on cash, download AVG virus scanner, or use trendmicro.

Update all drivers from time to time. This can be done by clicking

Start>ControlPanel>System>Hardware>DeviceManager>Update Driver

Make sure your computer is up to date with windows update.

Here is a fairly reliable way to shut off a trojan, virus, adware, or something running in your computer. Sometimes an Anti-virus or other program is unable to delete a virus or something because it is currently in use. Sometimes trying to delete them yourself won't always work either, especially if they are running.

By using CTRL+ALT+DEL and going to your Processes Tab, it is a good way to check for running viruses, adware, trojans, and other little bugs crawling around on your computer.

Most (at least 90%) of the things you find running in there NEED to be running for your computer to function correctly. Some might be other programs you have running (aim, msn, irc, mail programs, firewalls, websites, games, so on...). Then every once in a while you might find something in there like "Webrebates" or other things which are usually adware or something. Here you can end the process usually to stop it.

Doing this is dangerous however, if you don't know for sure what the processes are, do not touch them, leave them be.

If you end a process and it comes back, that means one of two things:

1. It is a part of a Windows program or another program that needs that file to run properly, and Windows or that program re-opened it to keep the program functioning.

2. It is an adware that is configured to always run, even if you shut it off through the Processes Tab. In this case, lookup the process on Google for possible ways to remove it from your computer.

Also, sometimes if you are unable to delete an adware/trojan, another last resort can be to restart your computer IN SAFE-MODE. During safe-mode, Windows is instructed to keep certain programs from running. Most of your startup programs won't load, and you will find that during Safe-Mode, you have no internet access. Now since most things don't run in Safe-Mode, just go to the folder in which the adware/trojan is located, and delete it all. Remember that you aren't finished yet. Prior to this you might have to check the internet to find out of this adware has put any registry keys onto your computer. If it did you can go to Start, then Run, then type regedit and press enter. The Windows Registry Editor should pop up. If you did your research, there should be instructions on where to go to delete the necessary registry keys. DO NOT DELETE REGISTRY KEYS UNLESS YOU ARE 100% POSITIVE THAT THOSE KEYS ARE UN-NEEDED SPYWARE/ADWARE/TROJAN KEYS. DELETING THE WRONG KEYS COULD RESULT IN YOUR COMPUTER CEASING TO FUNCTION AND NOT BEING ABLE TO TURN BACK ON! Make sure that the websites you get the registry information for a program are accurate and from a trusted source, such as the Microsoft website, Norton website, or others.

There are hundreds and hundreds of types of programs that could be running in the Processes Tab, so if there is one that looks suspicious and you're not sure what it is, post on this topic, or feel free to PM me. I'd be happy to tell you what it is. Or check out this site: http://www.answersthatwork.com

Anybody else who is smart on these subjects, feel free to add in anything that might also help others with this.

Is it a miracle that itÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s so clean?

No not really. I am going to give you the secret on how I manage to keep my computer so clean.

Norton Anti Virus

By far the best AV that I have ever used. It costs about $40 but you can get it from as little as $15 on the Amazon Marketplace. I update my virus definitions daily to make sure that I am always up to date and scan weekly to ensure I am clean and to remove the remains of anything that attempted to get onto my system.

There are of course plenty of other anti-virus alternatives but I really highly suggest you actually pay for some protection either with Norton, Mcafee or Sophos. If you want to be stingy you can always go for AVG but when it comes to your computers anti virus, free really isnÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t good enough.

ZoneAlarm Pro Firewall

By far the best firewall IÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ve ever used. I actually paid for the Pro version but the free is almost as good. Basic protection against data theft. Highly recommended

Ad-aware SE

Excellent piece of software and 100% free. I always make sure to check my definitions using their automatic updating function and scan every few days.

Spybot Search&Destroy

Again 100% free. Very similar to Ad-aware but it goes deeper into the registry and picks up a few things that Ad-aware does not. Its best to have both than one or the other as each one picks up other spyware better than the other.

SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster isnÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t really a spyware remove but more of a preventative against it getting onto your computer in the first place

It prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, diallers, and other potentially unwanted pests. It can also block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.

You only need to configure this once and it runs silently on your computer. Just remember to download and activate the update feature every so often to get the latest spyware definitions.

SpywareGuard

Anti virus software scans each file before opening to see if it contains any viruses, well SpywareGuard does exactly the same but scans for Spyware. A great addition to SpywareBlaster. Sits nicely in the system tray on start-up and provides all round protection. Again you just have to remember to update it occasionally

HijackThis

Extremely powerful tool. Enables you to remove registry entries put onto your computer by malicious spyware. It also shows up a lot of critical object so donÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t mess with this unless you know what you are doing. Run HJT and save the log. Then post the log in the Tech and Computers board here or on the http://www.hijackthis.de site to see what objects you can safely remove. I do this quite often just to keep my mind at rest but you only really need to do this every few weeks.

BugOff

Another piece of software by Merijn. I wouldnÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t suggest others use this unless they know what they are doing. It lists some of the current exploits that are used by Spyware which Microsoft has not yet released a fix for and enabled you to close this hole. Its quite complex but the help files are useful.

CWShredder

Originally created by Merijn this is a specific utility for removing the CWS spyware, one of the worst kinds of spyware. It is now owned and updated by Intermute software, but is still free to download.

Windows Update

Most people have no idea that about 90% of virus and spyware can be prevented simply by making sure that windows is up to date. Do this regularly and feel at little bit more confortable ;) Sombody posted a great guide on the Windows Update a little while ago. Do a quick search on the forums :P

GRC port scanner

Good way to check if your firewall is working. Also has a lot of information on how to secure your computer.

Of course all this software is great to have but the best preventative action against Viruses and Spyware is you. Use common sence to determine if that program you are downloading or that site you are visiting is a bit dodgey. By all means have fun on the internet just keep a watchful eye out for things thart arnt what they initially seem ;)

There are loads of other stickies on this forum too with links to other software and guides on removing spyware and viruses. Its critical that you protect yourself.

You always think it wont happen to you, but unless you have this software it might already have, you just donÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t know it yet. ;)
