The Help & Advice Stickies

Featured Replies

New Tip.It users - since they are the ones who use the forum most - seem to ignore the stickies in the Help & Advice Forum. And I can't blame them. For a new member who needs the answer to their question quickly, reading six or seven different topics is the last thing they'd want to do.

I propose there be one sticky in Help & Advice, a merge of the other stickied topics, which would include all the relevant information; would be easy to understand; and would give the user the procedure to go through before posting their query.

Offline and unavailable.

The example you gave would be great for the board. I think it should be shortened though and adapted specifically for the forum.

The other stickies should still be removed; for new members, it must seem daunting. What I hope is that all these topics are merged into one or two stickied topics, so that it is clear what one must do before posting.

This is what I propose:

  • [*:2sfutjhf]ForsakenMage's Acronym topic be removed.

[*:2sfutjhf]Mercifull's safety guidelines moved to Tech & Computers.

[*:2sfutjhf]Albosky's topic about pictures be removed.

    [*:2sfutjhf]Messy's price check topic removed.

[*:2sfutjhf]Messy's Lag Help Guide be moved to Tech & Computers.

[*:2sfutjhf]Craven Image's topic left as it is.

[*:2sfutjhf]Grin king's rules be merged with AThousandLies' topic.

The merge of grin king's and AThousandLies' topics could be called Help & Advice Rules and Guidelines.

Details of what to post in would be given in order to maximise clarity:

  •
[*:2sfutjhf]Check the Tip.It website before posting (You'll be surprised how many people don't).

    [*:2sfutjhf]Search before posting

[*:2sfutjhf]Give detail/ be specific (Just like what AThousandLies' topic describes).

[*:2sfutjhf]Then links to the designated post for each problem (Prices to the MarketPlace topic, Comp help to Tech & Computers, Screenshot/avatar/sig help to Kiara Kat's topic in Newcomer at the Gates, ForsakenMage's link to acronym meanings etc).

This would leave only two stickies left in Help & Advice, "Looking for a Heroes Partner", and ,"Rules and Guidelines" - Which would minimise confusion.

Offline and unavailable.

There is an identical topic found here, which describes how to add pictures. The sticky I'm proposing would have a link in it to particular topics so new members know where to look before asking.

Thanks for starting this topic!

I'd requested a similar yet smaller change from a Help and Advice forum moderator about a month ago, but he didn't feel he had the power to make these kinds of changes "without permission from the admins."

What I'd suggested was just renaming the stickies so that the titles were simple and *easy to read*. Right now they are wordy, in the form of questions, and just don't get to the point right away. SIMPLE titles would make the subjects stand out so that newbies could find their desired subject right away. I also recommend the use of CAPS in these shorter titles as they'll gain attention a bit better.

Old Sticky title:

Don't know how much your items are worth? Look here!

Suggested Sticky title:

PRICE CHECKS

Old Sticky title:

Can't post a picture? Don't know where to upload? Look here!

Suggested Sticky title:

POSTING PICTURES - How to do it

Old Sticky title:

Got a keylogger? Want to feel safer on-line? Look here!

Suggested Sticky title:

KEYLOGGERS and VIRUSES - how to fix and feel safer online

it's a lot easier to get over yourself when you look at intelligence the same way you look at beauty, or height, or eye color: being smart is easy, but being good is hard ... being smart is handed to you, being good is handed to *nobody*.

I like that, although I'm not too sure about the all caps stuff - I'm not a big fan of doing things that we really want to discourage users from doing.
