half frozen computer

first off ill just say that i have windows xp home on a dell 5150 3ghz pentium 4 (i think 32 bit processor) 512 mb or ram and 80gb hard drive

so my problem started around 3 weeks ago when i got a virus and it deleted 2 of the windows programs. they were: odbclient.dll and msgina.dll. i had som1 reinstall these files but with using a windows porfessional disc, but that did the trick and my computer could then start up. hooray! now i have another problem

the computer runs almost at its full speed (not a problem) but it wont do this for long. after using the computer for about 20 minustes it will just freeze up. the odd thing is that i can still type and move the mouse and click. i can still play runescape, but everything else doesnt seem to detect that i am clicking. i cannot hit the close button or switch programs at the bottom. i ran a few antivirus programs (avast, windows defender, and a windows malicious software remover tool) but they did not detect anything. i can only do quick scans with these programs because full scans will take too long and the computer will freeze up. i also deleted almost all of the temp files but it still freezes up. all i can do is restart my computer and use it for another 20 minutes at max.

i hope som1 knows how to fix this : /

Hmm, since you've been having virus problems, that could very well be it. What you want to do is startup in safemode. Press and hold F8 right before the Windows bootscreen comes on. Go to "Start Windows in Safemode". When the popup asks you if you want to continue working in safemode, click yes.

Open up your antivirus program, and try again. Hopefully you'll be able to get through a scan, and remove any malicious programs.

I'd also recommend getting a copy of NOD32, which is an excellent antivirus and protection client. In addition to that, you'd also like to get your hands on a copy of Spybot Search & Destroy, which will help keep out, and remove cases of spyware.

On the other side, seeing as you stated that a few Windows files were deleted, perhaps others got removed in the process that you were unaware of. What's happening, from your description, sounds like Windows Explorer is just freezing, that's all. If the computer freezes in safemode, or if you don't detect anything after a full, indepth scan, try popping in the Windows CD and going through the automated repair feature, which will only take about 30 minutes of your time.

Goodluck, let us know how it goes.

well i cant reinstall windows cuz its telling me that the current version i am running (service pack 2) is older than the one on the disc (sp 1a) and i know that if i try to uninstall windows the computer would crash and most likely end up not even being able to turn on. im kinda screwed for now so any help plz

system restore wont let me go far enough back to when it worked fine, so i cant do that

my dad reinstalled windows when i wasn't home, and when he did that he didnt read the xp product key correct so now it says my windows isnt a genuine copy and i cant get any updates

i dont know how exactly to put sp2 on the disc cuz i dont think it is a cd-rw but thats just an assumption. that and i dont know what site i could trust and i might get a keylogger or a virus.

o and he doesnt remember how exactly he got it to how he had to re-enter the cd key and i cant figure it out, because when i go to reinstall it it only gives me the option of repairing it

this doesn't really relate to what you last said, but i like to partition my hard drive so everything i want is on one drive and the system stuff is on the other. that way, if my computer screws up i can clean install xp without losing stuff i want. or you can back your stuff up frequently
