You need to go and buy a Microsoft Windows XP Pro or Home.

I'd reccomend home for basic users...

You can get a copy of this for around ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã90...

Thanks.

There is no way he can run XP on that computer.

The only upgrades you could possibly do with a computer that old is more ram, bigger (maybe faster) hard drive, and maybe put in a graphics card.

It's possible, but it would run extremely slow.

You could add more RAM and a larger hard drive as blade said, but that isn't really worth the time and money on a system that old. You're better off just building yourself a new $500 system. It'll run XP smoothly and still run just about anything out there on atleast low settings if you put a decent video card in it.

For around ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã500 you'll be able to get a nice gaming machine, possibly with a conroe CPU! :D

Highly unlikely considering the cheapest Conroe CPU is still around ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã200. Now an Allendale chip on the other hand can be gotten for around ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã100-150.

The main difference is that Allendale chips have half the L2 cache the Conroe chips do, but they will still perform quite well, especially after an overclock

Even then, ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã500 might not be enough to get a whole new Core 2 Duo system because keep in mind, you'll need the CPU, a new motherboard, DDR2 RAM of some sort, a PCI-e video card of some sort, larger hard drive, ect, ect.

You want to get yourself a new OS there mate - Windows 98 is no longer being maintained by Microsoft, and as such, you're no longer getting patches for exploits/vulnerabilities that people discover = VERY BAD.

If your PC can't run Windows XP, you could look at 2k, or linux, but most likely the best option is a new PC.

If he wanted to build it himself, he should also check out Ars Technicas Budget Box ($800+a bit for an OS)
