It sucks - I couldn't write lyrics to save my life

Featured Replies

It sucks big time :x

I'm trying since years. I'm pretty good in writing essays, i have my head full of ideas, concepts, visions and utopias.

In a matter of a couple of hours i can live through a cascade of moods.

I LOVE to sing and i'm working since years on my style. Give me a random song and i will be able to interprete it (unless it is from Linkin Park. Tried Crawling - just impossible to reproduce that song in a adequate fashion). Sometimes a song follows me around for weeks or even months and i make up multiple versions (a given song mind you, i have none of my own.)

I can also play a little guitar, bass and keyboard.

Only once in my life i was able to write a song. The whole thing fell into place in a matter of maybe an hour - including recording. (I just took some random music i already had). This was about 8 years ago. The song is even okay. (Although it isn't exactly the kind of music i like.) Now that i think back i remember i did about two or three more songs, but they just were embarrassing.

So what is this?! What's wrong with me?

If you really want to write lyrics try and learn poetry, hell even take a poetry class. Sounds stupid, but that coupled with simply having some inspiration can help a lot.

Hey! That really isn't a bad idea at all. I have to take some courses i can choose freely for my study anyway. I could do something in that direction. Well.. ty

I've found that good lyrics must not just be deep or have meaning, they also have to fit the singers voice perfectly, and have a good way of putting things. The more words or expressions you know, I think that would help. They don't have to be big words (most big words sound terrible in songs, IMO). I think, as Nadril said, poetry would help, because it would help not only creative writing, but the way you use the small words and learn new ones.

THEN WRITE.

You are maybe right though. Maybe i shouldn't try to make sense when i write lyrics.

Have to contemplate about everything you all say anyway.
