how do you shade good

No idea how the others do it... But how I do it, (Like how I did on my tree)

Since the sun is on the right, I got a normal colour brown and coloured half the tree with a normal/light brown... Then on the halfway or past halfway mark, I got a very slightly darker brown, and I drew a line with that brown past the halfway mark of the tree...

Then, I got a slightly darker brown, and I drew a line down the tree about

| | away from the previous brown line... Then I got a slightly darker brown again, drew a line down the tree | | away from the previous line again... And so on.

Once that is done I got the exact same colours as the lines, and filled in the small gaps between the lines with the exact colour as the line to the right of it.

Example: If the sun is on the right, then the left side of the tree would be dark, | |.

Pretend the left | is darker than the right |, you would colour the gap the colour of the line to the right, so the gap colour would be the colour of the lighter brown (The Right | )

Vice versa if the sun/light source is on the left side.

Now I'm waiting for someone else to post a completely different, easier way to shade making this post a waste :)

use light colors were its light, and dark colors where its dark like shadows

Thank you Captain Obvious.

i dont know any other way to explain it.

EDIT: tip is to pick a light source coming from one side, and make things brighter if they are facing the light source, and darker if they away from the light source

I think that he needs help on how to do the actual shading though...

There is probably an easier way than my guide.

also different people have different styles of working and shading but there are many ways , once you have a bit more experience u'll get use to it.

i'm surprised noone's mentioned dithering...

it's more a technique of cutting down on colours, really, but it's closely connected to shading and colouring in general.

like you said when shading the tree, predator, you use a darkening scale, but instead of using so many colours, you can let the colours "lap over" each other. in for example a chess-board pattern. this creates the effect of a different colour in between the two shades, and can be used to great effect. but it's quite an advanced way of doing it and requires ALOT of practice to look good. it does look more "pixel" then, though.

Thumbs up for dithering, I used to dither on my old pixel iso's.... Sorry vlad, this topic just seemed a bit ridiculous to me... How do you shade..? Are you serious? I mean that's like asking.. how do you draw...
