Scams/Tricks to beware of

Cyan

Recommended Posts

Before i let you know what to beware of, lets re-visit (or visit for some) what scams are. scams are usually targeted at newer, lower level users (as far as i can tell) but are targeted at everyone. Scams can range from things such as scamming you out of items, money, passwords, etc. The intention of most scams is for the scammer to win, the target of the scam to lose (win/lose situation). yes we all know scams are against the rules, but people still do em, so we always have to be on the look out. Alsooo, if you know of other scams/tricks to be on the watch for please post so i can add.

now lets start shall we?

Trick/scam 1: the first scam i was exsposed to. One day in draynor someone said "dropping 2mil!!!!! follow for drop party!!". he then proceeded to tell everyone to bring rope. they then procedded south to lumby swamp. after arriving to lumby cave he told everyone to buy candles. afterwards they all went down. he told everyone to watch for the wall beast. BUT after making it safely through he went east, if you don't already know, exspossed light soruces explode in parts of the cave, along with the light sorce. so there was lots of explosions, but not the scammer! (nor i luckily) everyone then paniced, they were under attack from the bugs and were caught by the wall beast. he quickly rounded up what loot he could, including a /D MED/ teled and logged. his name was very complicated, full of numbers and random letters. ouch.

Trick/scam 2: one of the most common scams. on the hectic world 2 (1 for ftp), my friend was selling dh's helmet for 900k, someone traded, no big deal. put 900k down, no big deal. but as soon as my friend proceeded to put the dh helm in, the person quickly took away the cash, leaving /90k/ instead. my friend didn't notice it, and was ALMOST scammed out of his dh helm. but my friend caught it and noticed, he reported and went on to sell it. So always be sure the check before you hit accept!

Trick/scam 3: FTP newbie's are the target of this horrable trick. a high level, to confuse newbies, will go to a busy world call out "drop party, lots of st00f!!" many people follow him, he then heads into edgeville dungeon, the more expirenced players will notice once they near the wildy. then after going into the wildy, dropping a few not so rare items, his pure friends come in, and slaughter the not-so expirenced players. I'm not exactly sure how common this is, but its happened to friends before. Just want to put the warning out.

Trick/scam 4: Password scamming. Password scammer usually trick you with things such as "want 100000 mil?! lemme have your pw so i can give u it!" or "want your stats to 99? gime your pw and i'll get em all up to 99!" orrrr "hey, i know this awsome hack/cheat code. if only i could get your password and get you (some awsome thing)!" and even the one jagex has provided us "on password scams add my old favourite noobiest scam in book:

scammer: "hey look jagex blocks your password *******"

Newb: "cool my password is: hello"

scammer then steals account." password scammers can be pretty persistent. Oh and another form of password stealing maybe when a user gives you a link to a "hacking/cheating based website" they say theres things there to help you get rich or whatever, but the site may contain key loggers. so be careful taking links from random people! thank you trebor4312 for the jagex made one :P

Trick/scam 5: "There is one scam where you are standing in a bank and you see someone yelling, for example, "sellin guthix mjolnir 300k!" and a shortwhile after that you see someone yelling "buying guthix mjolnir 2.1mil!". After this goes on for a minute or two you think: why dont they trade each other? The reason: ITS A SCAM. As soon as you buy the item from person number 1, both of them will laugh at you and tele. If a deal seems to good to be true, it probably is. Report them and keep on playing" thank you Azulmono55

Trick/scam 6: "Alright. So, this one dude..he was hired for a PK video. He had to bring ONLY his whip. And, the user gave him 28 cabbages (un noted) to see if his inventory was empty. So, to the wilderness they went. The scammer dropped *4* D b axes..and the guy picked them all up. Then, he was attacked by the guy..died, and lost 1 axe and his whip..because the axes are worth more than the whip, according to the default price. Always watch out. If someone wants YOU in a p vid, never accept unless you KNOW and TRUST them." Thanks to adam_ross0 for this! Also MAY involve mystic tops. note: you can pick up 2 OR 3 mystic tops(protect item prayer needed for 3) and keep items such as whip's due to price changes. just be sure those are your most valuavle items! thanks to Berrakus for the information on the price changes

trick/scam 7: Be sure to be weary for lunar mages that want to tele you and a group of other people to a place that they claim is somewhere other then it is. It may just be best to not accept the tele UNLESS you know the person well. I dunno much about these but i thought i should put them up anyways :XD: thanks to ranging_beast

trick/scam 8: saw this browsing the forums FTP's beware!

also charecoal, but thats worthless.

to some f2p they're not. i see some always trying to buy them for 500k

Yes they are SCAMERS

Someone is selling for like 400k (example) so they get their friend saying they're buying for 500k. So lets say someone buys for 400k hoping to make 100k in 20 seconds, but then they both log.

ps- If a member's item was usable in f2p, it wouldn't be a members item now would it?

first guide, so i'm kinda expecting critisim  Still in the works :anxious:

Also, if this isn't the right place for it (not a guide maybe?) sorry!! i'm kinda new to these forums, so i'm not 100% sure.

I also found a quote on the RANTS forum, that i thought made a lot of sense...

There's something I've been noticing much more often recently that is starting to become very irritating. I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but I'm going to vent anyway...

I've noticed a lot of the recent "scamming" players are using lots of spaces in their names to avoid being reported. Not only this, but when you put your chat on Hide (like I do in merchanting/marketing worlds like World 1) to see who's requesting a trade with you, this prevents you from being able to report the scammer because it says that you must have traded or spoken with them in order to report them for Item Scamming. Well, we all know how fast the text box moves in these crowded worlds, so even if you have traded with them, you must be extremely quick on reporting them or else it's as if you never made contact with this person.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not whinning about scammers. I know for a fact that we're all sick and tired of hearing about them. It's just the Item Scamming reporting option that I think needs some modifications. JAGeX should also limit players on the amount of spaces in their username just for the sake of security and fairness.

Am I alone on this one, or does anyone else agree?

I agree to be honest.

Edit: haven't updated in awhile, been kinda busy, expect more later.

Also, free bumps are welcome

The first one was a good read, but the rest all boil down to "Read second trade screen" and "Don't be a complete flippin idiot".

I guess, but sometimes people can't grasp simple concepts. Some people may need examples, or situations to completely understand the message, ya know?

Nice guide, in a way. At least you described what to watch out for.

Heres another..

Alright.

If someone wants YOU in a p vid, never accept unless you KNOW and TRUST them.

It's more common with mystic tops given away free, though that's more of a pking strat than a scam.

Trick/scam 5: With the update of tele-group (lunar magics) a bunch of new scams came into light. So your sitting ther minding your own businness, waiting in lumby for a friend maybe, or just standing there, talking to friends. Accept aid is on, but you don't worry about. when...BAM!!! someone with lunar magic teles you and many other people (may have done this for himseld or with a clan/friends) your caught by total surprise!! but theres nothing you can do, your at the mercy of the person/group. The moral of the story. be careful with accept aid. (not sure if this is plausable, i don't know if theres a warning about teleother magic.) Thanks to ranging_beast for bringing it to light.

Before you are teled, it asks you if you want to be teled or not.

They changed the value of Whips so they now protect over Mystic tops. So if someone tries this on you, feel free to pick up the Mystic tops as you will get to keep 2 or 3 (and your whip) when you die.
