Nadril
For example, some of the WW-I or WW-II heros that we hear about. mate, i dont disagree with you for a second on that one. I truly believe there are no greater heroes than war veterans. But that dosent change the fact that Shane Warne did something of great importance in the game of cricket - he showed test cricket what spin bowling really is and made watching cricket for millions of Australians a worthwhile and exiting thing. Now you may not be able to accept that, but millions of australians (and indeed some poms) can. Oh, I don't doubt for a second he was a great guy. However, a "hero" is too much. Being incredibly good at a sport and entertaining people is not what being a hero is about.
warri0r45
"hero" is too much. let me contextualise what i mean a little bit. WW2/WW1 veterans --- HEROES \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ \/ Shane Warne - Cricketing hero I see what you mean perfectly, but youll have to concede (spelling) that the term hero (these days) is used loosely. Think of little kids saying 'hes my hero' what they actually mean is that they admire that person. So when i say that Warney is a cricketing hero, i mean that i, and millions of others, admire him for his contributions to cricket. Theres no doubting that war veterans are and will always be the greatest of heroes.

I know i had a hand in derailing it a bit, but i cant help someone elses ignorance and i couldnt just sit on my hands. I find it offensive when someone indirectly sais the aussie cricket team are a bunch of slackers who never have to lift a finger and as a result, roll in millions. Try and get your brain around this - there are naturally gifted academics, right? some who even find school and then tertiary studies easy, right? does that mean that they can slack off? - NO. does that mean that they dont have to try? - NO. does that mean that they dont have to work hard for the results? - NO. So now apply this to a sportsman. no-one becomes a truely elite sportsman without working for it, even if they are naturally gifted, i dont care how much you say otherwise. You cant fail in sports if you win every game but dont practice, unlike in academics where if you dont do any work but pass every test it is easy to fail 2. Even after being presented evidence that people who are gifted enough never have to work hard you still dont listen. Who said all of these people worked hard? warri0r45
1. You cant fail in sports if you win every game but dont practice, unlike in academics where if you dont do any work but pass every test it is easy to fail read the bolded text, slowly, 5 times. so your assuming that the guy in your example never practiced in his life? your assuming that he just went on the court as a kid and blitzed everyone? your assuming that he needed no guidance and he was superiorly smart enough to pick up the game, pick up a ball and simultaneouslty become the best basketballer going around? If you had two cents to rub together, youd know that he had to work up a sweat, make his brain hurt (or think, as i believe it is called) and learn the game, the plays, the technique, the mindset of the other team, etc 2. Even after being presented evidence that people who are gifted enough never have to work hard you still dont listen. Who said all of these people worked hard? I still dont think that they are working harder than a kid who just got out of high school, working 3 jobs, getting 5 hours of sleep every night and is studying ever chance he gets how can you seriously concider one example overwhelming evidence? i think youll find that your example is the 1% minority. still dont think that they are working harder than a kid who just got out of high school, working 3 jobs, getting 5 hours of sleep every night and is studying ever chance he gets as for this part.. is this kid you? because that would explain all the resentment your showing towards the supposed 'ease' at which sportstars gain 'millions'... :shame: Need i remind you that this post is about Shane Warne, you havent even mentioned his name ONCE. so im going to end this right now. no more arguing. Its christmas time, and on boxing day, Shane warne and the Australian team is going to walk out onto the MCG infront of close to 100,000 screaming fans with millions more watching on TV. This will be a historical moment in cricket, the second last test match for Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath and the last appearane of Warney at his home ground. added to this, Warney is just 1 wicket away from a total of 700 in tests, which will make him the highest wicket taker ever. just incase you missed it the first time.. baron8000
Ok in an attempt to break the flame war... In my view, Shane Warne is a pretty great chap, an excellent cricketer without doubt, who has undoubtedly contributed to their ashes win. Fair play to him retiring at his peak, many continue too long and lose their prestige to a degree. I have a problem with the label of hero however, i would not desribe David Beckham as a hero, nor Martin Johnson for a single reason - Yes they have reached the pinnacle of their chosen area, yes they may have come through adversity to do this but in my mind that does no constitute a hero. Many people everyday work through adversity, lawyers, doctors, policemen, firemen and all the other staples of our society undoubtedly have some people of this type in their number does this make them heroes? Again not in my view. It makes them people to be admired, but not worshipped. i feel that Mr Warne's hightened media status may have led to his accomplishments being overemphasised - many of the people you see on the street will have acheived similar feats, but due to their area of expertise people don't realise this. This brings me to define what does make a hero? Maybe its saving lifes, maybe its making a serious contibution to society (which, in my view cricket does neither - despite how seriously many take it, it is still just a game as are all sports - after all people could live without cricket) or maybe nobody knows, all I think is that Shane Warne isn't quite there. I have digressed awfully, but would like to go back on topic with congratulation to a great sportsman and entertainer who has certainly whupped my country's cricket team into the dirt :)
