AGP video card recommendations

Featured Replies

Our old card packed up, so we're in the market for a new one.

Budget is AUD$300-400 (USD$250-300)

Needs to be AGP.

Our motherboard is a GA-8IG1000MK (Rev 1.x)

Intel P4 3.2 GHz, 1 GB of RAM

Newegg sadly don't ship to Australia, so that isn't of any help.

He was right though, a 7600GT would probably be the best card you can get for your price range and will run most games fairly good at high settings. Mine has handled what i wanted it to fine and I'm quite happy with it. The next step up from that would be to a 7800GS, but thats around $70-80 more than your budget for most cards and a step down from the 7600GT would be to the 7600GS, which is roughly $80 less and would still play games, but not to the graphical extent of either of the other two.

Also, what are you going to be using this card for?

I have a 7600GT and an FX5700, both AGP. As far as quality and frame rate go, you can't tell the difference at all, I'm not even kidding.I was extremely dissapointed, and a little mad that I wasted $120 or so

Yeah AGP is incredibly outdated. I wouldn't bother upgrading a card unless you upgrade to a PCI-E motherboard.

As far as I can see, a micro ATX socket 478 board with PCI-e is going to be hard to find in Australia. PCI-e would be the best way to go, but it would blow his budget if he tried to get a half decent video card along with it isn't always possible or the best path to take money wise.

As I asked though, what will you be intending to do with this card? Based on that, you can either get a 7600GT which will be one of the best AGP cards you can get or if you don't intend to be doing graphics intensive tasks, you could drop it down to a 7600GS or something below that.

Well currently we're using a Geforce2 MX so... anything's going to be a step up from there.

For me personally, this card is fine :) Runs Firefox, msn, IRC, notepad... but my brother's into gaming, likes his rts, rpg and fps. Our old card was an Fx 5500 IIRC, couldn't be positive about that though. The fan siezed up, we got it replaced but by that stage the whole card was overheated and it just crashes now.

So yeah, basically we want the card to be able to support whatever the PC is going to support.

We've no need to buy a new motherboard, we don't want to get the top of the range card, so a few rungs down the ladder (which is what most AGP cards are from what I can ascertain) is fine.

Well as I said, the 7600GT in the link I provided above should be more than enough for everyday use and your brothers RTS and FPS games.

If its not too graphical intense gaming maybe go for a 6600 or 6800 GT. Not sure how much those are now compared to 7600GT's.

If you have that much to spend on a Graphics card, just buy an entirely new computer with a PCI-Express enabled motherboard. Dell has some for around $700, and an excellent card would be $200.

does nobody here like ATI ???

I do :) Well. What I mean to say is Aye to the question "Does anybody here like ATI?" ;) ;)

But...I have no knowledge in the AGP field (and as long as not asked, dont have to admit to not knowing PCI-E beyond my earlier reseacrching)

Eh I tried...The only new AGP Card that ati made is the x1950 pro.. which is faster than a 7600gt but it costs a bit more.
