The True Cost of Windows Vista

Featured Replies

I suggest you read this.

It's a comprehensive article on the real cost of Windows Vista, beyond the sticker on the box.

They are implementing things that will effect anyone using an x86-based computer [intel, AMD, Via processors]. As well as dropping support for things like unified drivers, which is sending Vista users back to the stone age in drivers.

Thats a huge page... got a summary?

Executive Summary

-----------------

Windows Vista includes an extensive reworking of core OS elements in order to

provide content protection for so-called "premium content", typically HD data

from Blu-Ray and HD-DVD sources. Providing this protection incurs

considerable costs in terms of system performance, system stability, technical

support overhead, and hardware and software cost. These issues affect not

only users of Vista but the entire PC industry, since the effects of the

protection measures extend to cover all hardware and software that will ever

come into contact with Vista, even if it's not used directly with Vista (for

example hardware in a Macintosh computer or on a Linux server). This document

analyses the cost involved in Vista's content protection, and the collateral

damage that this incurs throughout the computer industry.

Executive Executive Summary

The Vista Content Protection specification could very well constitute the

longest suicide note in history [Note A].

One of the many reasons I don't use Windows.

I have no plans on purchasing Vista, or any other Windows OS.

If I buy a system with Vista pre-installed, I'd consider dual-booting it, but I wouldn't use it as my primary OS.

well basicaly you can say Windows Vista is the same as Xp the only diffenrse you can skin your windows and wutnot. my opinion stick with XP its a great OS and get vista when you are ready .

hi ...lol... I don't know wut to write---- WIP..

I suggest you take a couple hours to read and comprehend the post before you go replying. The linked article is about much, much more than skinning windows.

If everything in the linked article does pan out, we're in for some interesting times when Vista becomes more prominent in the wild.

The article bashes Microsoft for something which unfortunatly is going to happen anyway. The copy-protection "features" on the new HD-DVD and Blu-Ray media is so strong that only the illegal versions will give you the highest quality with the most flexibility.

HD-DVD/Blu-ray AACS encryption has already been circumvented.

I doubt HD-DVD or Blu-Ray are going to be that successful anyway.

I don't think the people producing this DRM crap know that if there is something that can play it, it will be circumvented.

Yea, I don't see why the hell Blu-Ray is being shoved on us...It seems to me that people liked DVD's because they used a popular medium that had been used for music - CD's. It allowed them to not have to rewind, fast-forward, that kinda' crap. I don't think a lot of people really care about Blu-Ray, lol.

Plus, aren't the players like $1,000 right now? Psht.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

- Me!

High Definition DVD's are a great idea. Unfortunatly the price is stupidly high and the built-in DRM is being foisted apon us.

I'm hoping that HD-DVD finally wins the "war" because if youve got an X-Box 360 then you only gotta buy the HD-DVD player add-on for about $150 rather than the Blu-Ray players which retail for a grand!

@ Diminished2b: I realise that pretty much every DRM system will eventually be broken by very persistant people but for the most people and the average Joe they will not have the technology or skills to be able to do it. You shouldnt have to run a DVD via a series of hardware and hacked drivers just to be able to play it where you want. Besides with the "key" system the studios just block it and then the work-around is rendered useless.
