Question about laptops and their age

For some reason with laptops, as they get older, their performance drastically drops. This doesn't happen with desktops. But for some reason, even if I never turned the laptop on, it just seems like with age they get really slow and run-down. My brother's laptop just got re-imaged a few months ago. He didn't use it since then. I turned it on today and it's crawling - yet it has the same out of the box software setup. I just don't understand how hardware can age? I've had three laptops and they all faced this same fate. When I get a computer for myself next year for college, I'd like to get a laptop, but with the short life expectancies (~3 years) I've had with them, it doesn't seem worth it. Could anyone explain this to me?

Well, I know I use a Toshiba and it's perfect now....Except the screen won't stay up and I need to lean it onto something (pin fell out, my fault) and it's a little slower. (Using up the memory though) I've had my laptop for 4.5 years! ::'

So, it might just be the type of laptop. Don't get Dell, that's my only suggestion.

I know what you mean. My best bet is that because the laptop relies on a battery, the capability of that battery to output the amount of electricity that the entire system reduces as it ages, and so would start to slow the system down...

I'm 16 and that's just a random theory. As to the actual cause, I couldn't necessarily say...

My laptop won't work without the cord now. The battery is maxed out and dead! :XD:

As I said earlier, all my fault. :-$

I don't know of any part of a laptop that actually "decreases" over [such short] age. Possibly some could get damaged if your laptop doesn't properly cool (Or i suppose simply the design of some are HOT and that might degrade parts). Another more likely scenario is that as everything else in technology gets better, laptops are generally weak to start off, and unlike desktops cannot be upgraded easily. It appears to slow down? Especially if you reformat I don't know why you'd see a problem.
