There is no right answer because not everyone has the exact same.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

If you want to check your current or make them bigger or smaller...

 

 

 

display in control panel

 

 

 

click the appearance tab

 

 

 

Advanced button

 

 

 

select icon as your item

 

 

 

there you can look and it and change it

Sorry didn't know you where planning on making them, you just asked me how big they where so i gave you the steps to figure out how big they are on your computer.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Now that I understand you plan on making some the answer is "it doesn't matter". It is in quotes because it does matter. They generally just get resized by the OS them selfs to fit the size the user desires at their will. If you make icons very big for example and make a one px black line with RGB + Alpha then it will be resized and the line that you wanted everyone to see may not be visible or partly visible. I'm not too sure about how the aspect ratio is delt with but you should go with 32 x 32 or 48 x 48 taking into consideration that some people have the large icons option selected.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

To Sum it up:

 

 

 

48 x 48 will present better portability

 

 

 

32 x 32 will present better quality (lack of portability will degrade quality)
