Obsession...

I know there is a video thread, but this video has a purpose.

The movie

Is based around the main characters obsession about this number, this one small insignificant thing. Now i know it's just a movie and everything, but from this short clip, i was able to get a theme, which i have worked out to be:

The obsession of an insignificant (Or significant for that matter) thing, can cause one to go insane thereby losing grip with reality.

This made me think a bit... As obvious with the trailer, Jim Carrey's Character was lead to thoughts of murder and such. This is such a big thing, over such a little thing.

But what happens with us, when we have obsessions in the real world. Maybe they do not affect us on this level (thoughts of murder)Or maybe they do but perhaps our obsession give way to life changes that we do not even realize. By this, we would assume that people do not just changed through the influence of people, but also the influence of personal interests. Interests are not just brought about by influence of other people, but also by a person's self interests (i.e their personality).

The point of all this? All these years that people say that our environment and the people that influence us are what makes, us may not be true. Another point I would like to make is that perhaps we should take a step back, and look at the things we like, and perhaps wonder "How will this affect me?"

Viktor, have you ever had thoughts of what your obsession with Europe, and those countries could do? Have you ever thought of how it affects your personality, your style, how you think?

Celt, for the love of TIF please fix your location. Its got the whole screen out of proportion.

Looks like I better move?

Post a screenshot so I can see what you mean.. mine is fine.

Like Viktor said, Celt really needs to fix his location, it's annoying as hell.

But anyways on topic, the first thing that came to mind while reading this was another movie called Pi. At one point in the movie a character is telling the main character:

Hold on. You have to slow down. You're losing it. You have to take a breath. Listen to yourself. You're connecting a computer bug I had with a computer bug you might have had and some religious hogwash. You want to find the number 216 in the world, you will be able to find it everywhere. 216 steps from a mere street corner to your front door. 216 seconds you spend riding on the elevator. When your mind becomes obsessed with anything, you will filter everything else out and find that thing everywhere.

The relevant part is the last sentence, when you become obsessed with anything you filter everything else out and see that thing everywhere. It just happens to be a number in this movie also.

Just thought I'd point that out, it's slightly relevant to this topic. :D

Just stop with the link please. It's literally driving me away from answering Lionheart's question and reading any thread you replied on, it's driving me insane.

stuff

yes, what you posted is completely relevant. But If you think about it, if we are able to filter out everything, and see that one thing in everything, wouldn't that be a potentially great ability if applied to anything? Studying, Medical researching, engineering, any kind of problem solving really....

To find something, do we really need to... want it in some way?

No, because that's being close-minded, and that gets you know here.

But if you think about it, being open minded isn't good either. Do you think it would be good to be open minded about Hitler's ideas? Should i accept his ideas and implement them with my own? No.

There is a point where us humans must be close minded, or else we face corruption. This is a big problem, people become so open minded, they get the ideology "Try everything to live life". Although its not a literal meaning, if you must accept every view, then you are doomed to be consumed by someones view eventually.

It would be interesting if it worked like that, and maybe sometimes it does. Edison (I think) invented the incandescent light bulb, and supposedly he failed 1000 times. I think that would constitute an obsession, and because of it he finally succeeded. Alternatively when you get really obsessed over something you could start seeing it everywhere, like in the quote I posted. You'll start seeing it in completely irrelevant places. Also you could be obsessing over too narrow of a topic, and miss possible solutions that are outside what you are obsessing over.

Edison failed 99 times. And when asked what he thought he said, "I did not fail 99 times, I simply found out 99 ways how not to make a lightbulb."

I've always heard 1,000 times. Didn't know it was mentioned in National Treasure, so I checked it on IMDb:

Ben Gates: [paraphrasing Thomas Edison, about invention of light bulb] I didn't fail, I found 2,000 ways how not to make a light bulb; I only need to find one way to make it work.

That made me curious so I used the powers of Google and found:

10,000

10,000

10,000

10,000

OK I was going to go and get sources for a lot of different amounts but the first four all say 10,000 so I am figuring that is correct.
