An Idea to make the Media Board a better place

Well, I came up with this idea about a week ago, and sent it to ForsakenMage.

I havent had a reply yet, but Im sure it will come.

Id like some input from the media board itself about this idea.

Well, I was recently thinking about the media board, and what has become of it.

Its a pretty dull place, with a great deal of "rate my sig' posts, and quite alot of pixel work, which are most of the time, not worth posting.

There is an amount of nice and well-worked out work, but you don't see that too often.

Now, I came up with this idea.

There could be a sticky on the media board, titled something similar to "Media Board Skill Building Challenge".

This would be a weekly, or perhaps bi-weekly skill builder.

The group of people who host this (Perhaps the T.S.B*.?), should come up with an idea to use, a different one every week.

The rules of the assignment could be the use of a certain technique, using new programs, and giving tips before starting.

T.S.B. = Tip.it Skill Builder

I think this would help the people in the media board who are serious in learning different kinds of digital art, with developing alot of different skills.

I think it would catch the people's interest the best if there was also a contest of some form, with a prize ofcourse, wchich I could finance.

It wouldnt make the contest exactly weekly, but the whole month should be seperated into 4 equal parts.

The first 3 parts are for the skill builders, then the 4th part is for the contest, using the things learnt in the skill builder.

A winner and runner up would be selected by the people who host the skill builders.

That was pretty much the pm I sent ForsakenMage..

Any additions, thoughts, comments, or perhaps discussions about it are appreciated :)

Thats true, but the thing is the hosts should try to make people get used to alot of different sorts of programs.

Most of the time free programs, as Terragen, Open Canvas, and that sort of programs.

There however should also be skill builders for programs as photoshop, and even though people who do not own it, can't enter, its one of the biggest and most useful programs to use, so it would be logical to teach people how to work with it. Right? ;)

Very nice idea, I actually enjoyed reading it. If Tip.It were to do that, it would be hard for otehr people to get the programs. Maybe to improve, you should use programs that have free trials, and maybe come with windows, for example the all-known MSPaint. This idea may be a good one, BUT many people will get mad at the ratings and such. *no mentioning any names* Some people think they are amazing at Photoshop/otehr digital art programs and will argue. So there shpuld be a plan of checks and blances for everyone to enjoy the whole concept of this plan. Even thought I havent thought of anything much to improve on, I still really like the idea and beleive this should be tried out maybe for a month, and take a poll on wether or not people liek this Skill Builder and Contest, or if they dont.

Much luck to doing this, and you have my support.

Thanks Cingular :)

The idea was to use mainly free programs, or programs with at least free trails, and show people what they can actually do with it, using the right methods.

What you said about the ratings and argues about it, thats a good point there.

I think comments and helpful critique should be given instead of ratings.

Sometimes people will have to face it that they are not 'teh uber best' at a program, and can learn more then they expected.

I think the method you discribed of trying the idea out for a month or so, and let everyone vote. This would be a great way to define if its useful, and if people liked it :)

Thanks for the support and good post :)

__-HI-__ As I explained in the above sentence, the focus should be laid on free programs, and programs with free trails.

Ofcourse there will be (if this plan comes in action) Photoshop based ones, as I explained before, because its jsut the biggest digital imaging program of this moment, and to get really good, it is neccesary (sp?) to use it.

Yea, ur your very welcome :) . Anyway, yes, using free programs, and maybe do a sticky tutorial section too, that you PM an admin your tutorial, they talk it over, and tell if it is god enought, and this could really be a cool graphics forum aswell. If we did that, peopel could use the tutorials, with the programs that they use to create cool things and be better. FOr example, 1 month we use Photoshop, people post photoshop tutorils MADE BY THEM, or if we did a MSPaint, people could post tutorials, for example, how to shade a pixel sig, or how to create one. You see where im going? well, hope i was usefull to ya, GL again.

Yes, but although its a good idea, I dont think there are alot of people here that have actually made tutorials themselves, so it wouldnt be of much use.

There could be however a post, sort of like a storage one, with all the previous skill builders, and outcomes of the contests.

This way, people who missed some, can still learn from them, by studying them.

well, i guess they could post otehr people tuts WITH PERMISSION FROM THEM. Althought I cannot really learn from a sig from studying from it...well i can, but when i was new to it I couldnt. For example your sig, if we did vector art on photoshop, people wouldnt really learn from it.

oh, yea, that wud be fine then, cool....sry for the misinterpretation. Also, maybe if you e-mail the head admin again with this post, so tehy can read it, and look at the reviews and how to make it better.

Yeah that'd be a good idea. The teachers would have to focus on teaching techniques though and not actual pieces. If you show someone how to do something step by step everyone's going to do it. If you show them the way but not what to do then they'll quit or actually make something.

Good on paper but I don't know how it would really do :?

  • 3 weeks later...

If you have contests for money, the actual decent sig makers will probley scooop up all da prizes. Which would be the same few that win all the competitions, etc. etc.

Its a good idea yea. Mabey have like 3 judges and give a formal rate (as in not 7/10) to each peice and what could be improved.

Would be alot of work for the judges but im sure theres people willing to do so.

Nice idea. Could use some more working out tho.
