    Runescape requires nothing. Nothing. No game disc required (not even a download, for that matter), no monthly fees unless you choose to, and you don't even need a computer; many who play it play at the library or other places with free computer access.

     

    And then we have advertisement. Runescape has heavy bias here as you are required to go to their website to play where they have conveniently posted an advertisement for this very affair not once, but twice. Most other corporations listed here do not have this requirement.

     

    Let's also not forget that many of these votes are from preteen's and younger, player's who have a very, very small repertoire of games. Though not an issue in itself, this makes older players or those who identify themselves as gamers feel frustrated. Many feel that it is unfair that a corporation should win simply because they direct their young swarm to vote for them.[/hide]

    Finally, as I've pointed out in the past, Jagex itself is not well liked. Runescapers have this stereotype in mind where other gamers point and laugh at the game merely because of it's graphics. Wrong. They laugh at it because of Jagex's abysmal customer service. They mock it because of the free trade updates. They find it horrible because of the never ending grinding. And they abhor it because of the community.

     

    Is a re-statement of what you already said.

     

    Please answer my post, you quoted it, and your post was at first irrelevant and at last a re-statement:

    First off most of your reasons have are either explainable (bad graphics (I don't even care about graphics) are because Jagex has enabled RS to be playable on truly ancient machines in order to increase number of possible customers; it's one of their leading philosophies), exaggerated (impossible to hold a conversation, really?), universal (idiots are only on RS?), and/or false/ill-informed (ever even done some of the not-novice quests? Try MEP2, Summer's End, ETC then tell me what a quest basically is in RS).

     

    Anything else is called a CON of playing RS. RS also has PROS over other games, like how other games have PROS of playing it. There's no such thing as a perfect game, and even if it was "perfect" for some person or group, it wouldn't be perfect for many other people.

    Here's what it boils down to: You believe Jagex are great game designers and that they deserve this award. I believe that as successful as they are, they do not deserve this award.

     

    That's not gonna change and nothing new is going to brought to the table. Anything I've said you've poo-pooed and followed up with why does it matter? So I've tried to restate it in a way that it makes sense.

     

    And I'm gonna try one last time:

     

    Here's why other gamers opinion matters: cause this is an award given by gamers to game producing corporations based on votes. When those who are not really gamers, i.e. too young or play one or two games, vote enough to swing the contest, they get upset. That's one of the complaints levied against the Wii: it attracts too many nongamers. Most of Runescape's player base aren't gamers. This would be like the American people not liking a law that foreigners voted into place, using the American system, and then being told that their opinion does not matter.

     

    Edit: You're also demanding evidence and arguments without giving any of your own. Instead of telling us that complaints about Runescape are invalidated, why not tell us how?

    If it's just the gamer community, then it should hardly matter. Each company or game targets different audiences, so I don't really care what the rest of the gamer community thinks about RS. Different games have different players, and players from one game disliking another does not impact the legitimacy of the players of that game's enjoyment.

    As does WoW on other games sites too. It really doesn't matter what people who don't play think, the fact is that lots of people that do play, and others who don't but thought Jagex deserved it, voted for Jagex.

    WoW is a respectable game. The players get laughed at, sure, but that's because of stereotypes. Heck, WoW players make up half the jokes, probably more. People laugh with, not at, WoW players. Runescapers are laughed at.
  4. They totally deserve it. You might ask why, but I don't think anyone else could have made such a successful MMO and basically launch the genre. Especially from a relatively small company when compared to Blizzard ect.

    Everquest would like to speak to you on that. See, just because they were the first does not mean they launched the genre. There were probably writers who wrote fantasy before Tolkien and writers who wrote sci-fi before Jules Verne, but they didn't found the genre. Those who get popular enough to make a difference, however, do. Runescape wasn't popular enough to be able to found the genre, though it may have been the first.
  5. why are people callin it controversial at all? Sure, some of the runners up had better graphics, but runescape has millions more players than those other studios will ever have. People attribute jagex's win to it's massive fanbase. That's correct. believe it or not, the company with the most fans who will vote them are usually the winners of these types of awards. if they want to avoid the controversy of a "popularity contest", they should make the award selected by a committee rather than the players.

    Here's the reason why it's controversial: Jagex is not well liked.

     

    Amongst the gamer community, Runescape is the butt of jokes. Jagex's decisions are often mocked, their customer support is infamous, and the free trade removal is surprising well known.

     

    Edit: I'd also like to point out that this was almost rigged. As pointed out above, both Lion's Head and Rockstar North are console game's. Runescape is not. Runescape has far more non-paying members who are capable of clicking on a link to vote for Jagex. Hell, Jagex has posted, at least twice, about the competition on the front page. Whereas the other companies really don't have that option- only superdedicated fans will visit their website. I'm a hardcore Nintendite, and I don't even visit their site, so that's saying something.

     

    The worst part is the F2P aspect of this. Whereas GTA and Fable require a console and the game itself, Runescape has a free aspect, is online, and can be played in your browser. Ergo, the other two companies have more gamers while Jagex is funneling in pre-teens to vote for them.

    Nothing, currently. The things they DID do against it are ancient, dating back to at least Burning Crusade, probably even further back. They delayed mail between two accounts that involved money and items by something like two hours and did the same for items bought via the auctionhouse, most likely to check the legitimacy of the trade, and disallowed trial accounts from getting more than X gold and going beyond level 20. And that's all. No trade restrictions, no auction house restrictions, nothing. But I've never seen or heard of Blizzard complaining about banks threatening to deny them credit card service. Which is odd, especially because all gold farmers must use a credit card to farm at all, unlike Runescape.
  7. I doubt if, ever, we'd be testing content that it'd be anything more than this. They did say that just minutes after a new piece of content's released that it'd take more than a year for the real QA team to find all the bugs as there's literally hundreds of thousands of people going at it at once. So really, just small things like this if ever we're testing something I'd expect.

     

    Sorry, just to add to this: I found where it said hours of thousands of players is equal to years of one small team testing:

     

    So we launched our new version, and after a couple of hours of launching the new version with over 100,000 simultaneous players, the amount of play from that many players at once equates to about 20 years of testing in just 2 hours! As you can imagine 20 years of testing DID try a lot more permutations and a few things which didn't quite work the same after all were discovered.

    What, you mean steal millions from players? Cause all monsters to not retaliate when attacked? Ensure that minigames are unplayable on release?

    But, here's the thing. Generals who lose battles are unpopular. They get very little slack. The same applies to those in the entertainment business.

     

    Where the hell do you get off? They're not on thin ice, they are releasing strong updates, the economy..well...that speaks for itself and is only players to blame..

     

    But here's the thing..Generals are paid who sit at the top. They're paying those who are working for them. Yes, do we understand that much? Now, Jagex are paying themselves, those sitting at the top are the ones who built that company and have it expanded so much they havr 400 staff and so much in-game content. You're paying them, and the moment you're unhappy you don't have to worry about "Quitting" because you need the money to survive. You can quit at any time and actually SAVE money! Yeah! Now do us all a favour..

    First off, they are on thin ice. The economy is a major sticking point which, due to their long running interference with the G.E, the G.E itself, and their inaction/failed action against 76king, they are mostly responsible for. Furthermore, a year of short inconsequential quests (a feature on which they, and many players, consider themselves "the best"), a very lackluster first 8 months, mobilizing armies spectacular failure, and their potion update being greatly compromised in a manner that rubbishes it, they aren't on particular stable footing.

     

    I should have clarified on the general statement. I was thinking of ancient generals. Greeks, Romans, and so forth. A general who succeeded was greatly admired, wealthy, and popular. But, should his luck fail, he would quickly become reviled. This could often lead to exile, execution, and other unsavory consequences. Similarly, any corporation that specializes in entertainment will get a lot of slack when doing well, but the moment they begin to falter their leash becomes rather short.

     

    Edit/P.S.: I get off by having a functioning brain, freedom of speech, and the fact that Jagex haven't exactly wowed me in recent years.

  10. A few good reasons why this RuneScape TD minigame won't be popular.

     

     

     

    One, I tried Frozen Throne's TD, from allying with friends to fighting against each other, in 3-4 player games. A good VS game can last easily over 30 minutes, and sometimes one player dies too early before the rest. Now what? There has to be some sort of time limit implemented unless Jagex's servers can handle tons of stalemate games at one go, and at the same time do something about early deaths. For one thing, I've never seen time limit as a deciding wining factor for TDs.

     

    Two, TD is only fun when you're playing it FOR FUN. A game or two with friends on a weekend is great, and you put effort into winning without having to consider things like "Ima gonna quit early coz I is losing". But RuneScape players demand some sort of physical rewards from every minigame. This alone kills the fun of it all. And then there's the idea of how your skill levels may come into play.

     

    for VS games:

    Long game + small number of players per round + level advantage/disadvantage + desire for reward = One great formula for people to whine about how unfair the

    game is and start quitting rounds early while looking for loopholes for 50/50 games.

     

    The above already kills the possiblity of VS games between players.

     

    Three, if you're talking about team games against enemy NPCs, then one good game can last even longer. In order for TD to even have any in-depth gameplay, there needs to be tons of waves of enemies, and a variety of weaknesses for each wave, and hence a variety of tower types. If not, it would just be a grindfest, clear 10 waves and get your points, then repeat the strategy over and over. I can even foresee a Tip.It guide on what tower to build where to ensure a quick victory.

     

     

    On a side note, Barbarian Assault is somewhat similar to TD, though I've never tried it. Hate the game with its weird monster design that doesn't fit in anywhere on RuneScape and silly strategy like 'using eggs to kill the queen'. A simple Saradomin forces/Zamorak horde-kind of enemy waves would have been much better.

     

     

    Time out, Frozen Throne's TD? What are you talking about. The only Custom TD map I know of that Blizzard made was Skibi's Tower Defense.

     

    He's referring to player made TD games, of which there are plenty, many of which have variations.
  11. Does anyone even notice that the topic description is "Mechscape will suck". Meaning that this is a troll thread, and the OP is not even hiding it. How can one make a good argument by stating that something that will turn out bad, will remove interest from something people like?

    Other than that I really like Eek as a reward.

    It wasn't just me then. I remember they did the same thing for the Yeti quest with, I believe, the Orcarina of Time's ice dungeon's music.

     

    The event annoyed me. A lot. The web part was annoying as it was all guess and check. The second part was still frustrating, not so much though. And the webbing part was... repetitive. The dog was also very counter-intuitive.

     

    The cape is meh, though Eek is pretty cool, though she would be better if she followed you instead of sitting on your hand. Also, arachnophobia.

     

    Have Jagex stopped the holiday quests? They did it, what?, twice and then gave up?

  13. You know why Jagex doesn't care about most players' opinions? Because those opinions are idiotic, shallow and ridiculous.

     

    At least 30-40% of threads are about the anti-RWT updates and how they ruined RuneScape. Jagex has already stated clearly that RuneScape will NEVER be returning to the old state before the anti-RWT updates.

     

    Maybe another 20% of threads are completely idiotic and clearly a waste of Jagex's time. This includes trivial issues, pointless crap and such.

     

    There are probably a bunch of threads that have such horrible English or the topic-creator doesn't know how to express themselves properly that Jagex doesn't want to listen/is unable to listen.

    But, unfortunately, the posters are Jagex's customers and they have a duty as a corporation to listen to them. If they don't, they should just get the heck out of industry. Anyways, they chose the age group they currently cater to. No one forced them to.
  14. I'd like to point out that Jagex created this entire mess, from start to finish.

     

    All MMORPGs have RWTing. But Jagex wanted to take a stand against it. Thus we had randoms and some other, relatively minor updates. Those did nothing but annoy legitimate players so they went a step forward: they created Pure Essence. Before hand, the fastest way for RWTs to make the scratch was mining essence in F2P. With the separation, their most lucrative method was destroyed, at least in F2P. So many went to members, often stealing credit cards to do so. This led to the banks supposedly telling Jagex that they would no longer allow players to use credit cards, a claim I still find suspect as other companies (particularly Blizzard) never had those problems. And this led to the infamous December 11 updates, which are known and criticized throughout the gaming community. Heck, Encyclopedia Dramatica lists it, and that's written by 4-channers. In an effort to revitalize PKing, they created several ill-received minigames. Later, they developed a somewhat satisfactory system that's only flaw was the devaluation of high profile monster drops. Then, they zogged it to Gork with the blasted statues.

     

    So, in short, Jagex caused the circumstances that led to the "necessary" anti-rwt updates, which, given their track record for honesty, I find suspect.

  15. I wouldn't vote for them for this year. Not after the content that they've given us. I would love it if Andrew could receive his own reward strictly for game programming.

    I would vote for that. The fact that he created an entire, corporation creating MMORPG from his garage, or was it room?, is a feat worthy of much praise. The only other single programmer I can think of who comes close it Toady1, the creator of Dwarf Fortress.
  16. Well, Mechscape could be very bad for Runescape. If it flops, Jagex will have lost thier initial investment(time spent developing the game and the money spent wages for those who did). Having taken this hit, Jagex may very well cut back on updates or staff.

     

    If it succeeds, all is well and good.

     

    But I have a feeling it won't. I don't know thist for a fact, but since Jagex is claiming to be producing Mechscape for an older audience, they'll have to handle it completely different. More transparency, more customer support, and less babying. Additionally, the gaming community has also given Jagex a negative stigma. No, not Runescape, Jagex. Jagex is famed for lousy customer support and their corporate lies. Because of this, many will be wary of touching the game.

     

    tl;dr If they treat Mechscape like they've treated Runescape but try for an older demographic, it will fail causing collateral damage to Runescape.

     

    Not only their lies, but their constant shroud of secrecy in which they operate. Not just about updates either. I also want to point out the people that came out to their offices for a few days and being made to sign Nondisclosure agreements. :wall:

    Whereas groups like Blizzard or Valve have sites, in the form of blogs, homepages, and community sites, that disclose information about future updates such as the release of new games, upcoming patches, new expansions, and developer commentary.

    The GE is, technically, player controlled. Without us, no one will be putting stuff into the GE. You're right about inflation though.

     

    D Chain is just an example.

     

    That's weird, I don't see any mods insulting players with legitimate problems. In fact, I hardly see any mods in RSOF. :-?

     

    Btw, the updates... well at least the majority of them were necessary ones. Some may have dumbed down the difficulty of RS, but other than that, it's pretty good.

    I'm referring to an infamous incident where a player lost 300 mil at Mobilizing Armies due to a glitch. When he posted on a the RSOF, a mod called him a liar throughout the thread then, when proven wrong, apologized to him in a condescending manner telling him he was lucky to get the apology.

     

    And WoW's not down to half their peak population. They currently have 11.5 million subscribers- about the same number of active Runescape accounts.

  18. He he, NO. WoW is the most popular MMORPG ever made, Runescape merely has the most accounts made.

     

    Jagex makes a good game, yes, but they've lost touch with their fanbase, don't care about their customers, and don't operate like a business. Thus I voted for Lions Head.

    It must be because I'm F2P then. I guess I haven't experienced what it's like to be in the "update ranters" crowd.

     

    Personally, I don't really care about what updates Jagex gives us. As long as they give us a good, playable game, I'm happy.

     

    Btw, things like Free Trade and Old Wilderness were removed, because of RWT. Jagex has no choice there. If they followed the community, then Runescape will be ruined for good.
