  1. Why do I play, hmm? Why indeed. I'm easily bored, I find no challenge, there are no redeeming values to RuneScape... Yet, I find myself playing a bit at a time, perhaps due to the social aspects of the game, of course compared to Xbox LIVE, where players are either obnoxious, or don't talk at all. It pains me to see how many people, though, play RuneScape simply to grind at skill levels all day. An example being this particular thread: viewtopic.php?f=66&t=801995, in which a player goes on to tell us that he's endangering his own health in order to train prayer in f2p, using that as a vice to persuade the audience. It's not heartbreaking, it's just pathetic sometimes.
  2. Let's be frank, strength should affect the rate at which you cut logs. I can tell you right now, some toothpick-thin guy, is not going to cut at the same rate as a professional lumberjack (Competition-grade).
  3. We're obviously dealing with a failure to communicate here. There are three levels of people in Runescape: Trolls, normals and idiots. The troll's, obviously, are people like me, who tromp around lighting discussion on fire with long-winded comments that people read in their entirety, only to be let down in light that it either A) Makes no sense, B) Completely contradicts all reason and logic, or C) Aims to criticize, patronize, and anger. You have the normals, people who simply play Runescape to enjoy it. They can be friendly, unfriendly, indifferent.. they could even be a troll or an idiot in disguise. Unlike the trolls and idiots, though, they tend to keep to themselves, and generally keep a neutral stance. Then you have the idiots: Brain capacity is at the bare minimum. It's easy to tell them apart from the crowd, almost too easy, in that they combine their relatively low intelligence with many qualities listed under the "troll". This makes for a melting pot of failure, and stupidity unprecedented by any means. Characteristic of the idiots, are obvious spelling and grammar mistakes with no actual indication that this person may be able to decipher what he/she did wrong. Additionally, the idiots are prone to fire angry threats, and tend to make comments which are completely unnecessary! That being said, in the immortal words of the internet's: Burn it with fire.
  4. Maybe it'd make up for it if level 99 combat skills didn't fail so utterly hard.
  5. The problem that most people seem to run into during this discussion is the illusion we call "common sense". The fact is, common sense is one of the most dangerous concepts in the world. This is largely due fact that common sense solely relies on such: There is a high probability that people will conform to a "normal" strain of actions, or behaviors. For those who don't know what normal is considered, it's simply a median which dictates what everyone is doing. Deviation from normality, which is referred to as "abnormal," denotes a 5-10% deviation from what is considered normal, or common. What's wrong here, is that everyone is not doing the same thing. Everyone is not "normal," nor are their actions common. What may be common sense to one person, is probably worlds apart from what the next person may consider common sense. It was common sense to invade Iraq from an executive point of view. From a civil point of view, it was probably a horrible decision. That's what I mean. ~American, kicking reason to the curb: "Yes we can!!"
  6. Only ~10% of people actually use summoning in cmb from experience. Personally, I've never leveled summoning, all 30 levels come from tears.
  7. Through careful observation, personal accounts, as well as accounts from others: The number of ~13-year old players who are generally undereducated, ignorant, or plain stupid.. number in the high 90-95% range. Jagex's security countermeasures do not typically prove effective as many young players, who range in ages far below 13, are able to simply bypass all restrictions by simply choosing "over 13" at the character creation page. Additionally, structures as the Stronghold of Security prove to be similarly ineffective in that knowing, is not the same as being able to implement said knowledge. Of course we've all seen players above the age of 13 make fools of themselves, but, the data is apparent. I can also safely say, since I started my first Runescape account at age 11, I have never received a single black mark, or had anything go awry with my safety. That's close to 7 3/4 years with no slip-ups. Obviously, if I can do it, anyone can, right? Wrong. It's apparent that the quality of intelligence amongst the average adolescent has deteriorated beyond repair in the last few years, with most unable to articulate a simple sentence of the primary school level. How do you expect to put safety first, when people can't even spell "bury"!? (Alluding to a fellow in Lumbridge, who upon spacial contact, proceeded to explicate his process in "bairying" bones)
  8. It actually tends to throw people off. My p2p combat is 122, but it is 118 f2p due to my low summoning. During a fight, people seem to think my combat skills are lower because I may have a high summoning, and end up getting their butt's kicked.
  9. You fail to realize that, armed with appropriate equipment, judging the level 138 is not attacking back, eventually the level 3 has a slim chance of winning. The earlier theories do not rely on inter-player combat when judging a win or loss, it simply states that the 138 will die.
  10. You know, I missed every holiday drop except Christmas Santa hats. Missed party hats completely, was trick-or-treating during the mask drop, didn't know Easter eggs even dropped until a few weeks after, etc.
  11. You don't own your accounts, they're assets that belong to Jagex. Similarly, each avatar is worth about the same amount as a store coupon: 1/1000th of a cent.
  12. I'm not good with dates.. I simply just remember logging in one day, and the news panel telling me I'd last set recovery questions in February of 2002. I wouldn't call it old school, merely that it's fun to watch the game progress, as I've aged almost 8 years.
  13. I think the misunderstanding here is the fact that attacks aren't passing through you, nor are you dodging the attack. Armor is a barrier which acts to protect the body by covering it with hard-to-penetrate materials. When a sword clangs against a hard metal plate, there's a good chance the blow won't cause any damage what so ever to the opponents body. Then, where attack and strength would theoretically come in, there are scientific accounts in which the force of a sword, such as a claymore, could damage the opponent, shattering his bones, even through the highly resistant armor. There are also spots in armor which are weaker, or thinner, and some spots even have tiny openings which shift due to movement. Striking these particular areas was often advantageous, sometimes fatal. As for a ranger's leather, tough leather was a staple in archaic warfare for a few hundreds years. It's actually quite resilient, with that ability to withstand minor attacks. A heavy blow from a sword, though, or an attack which stabs through the armor, will often negate any protection the leather provides. Seeing as these leathers are also made from increasingly tougher dragon hides, the defense bonuses are reasonable I suppose. As for a mage's robes, we've all seen what a dagger, or an arrow can do to that. Tears it to ribbons, right? While the robes do have defense bonuses, though in a more traditional rpg.. the mage would have virtually no defence, it's generally not enough defense to avoid the powerful attacks from a warrior or a ranger. The mage must rely heavily on the natural defense bonuses which his/her defense levels add in order to effectively survive.
  14. In an absolute monarchy, from which king's are generally derived, the king is always right. Nothing changed with that comment. :shame:
  15. The weapons generally look fine. The dragon scimitar is a bit overblown in design, I'd say, as well as the way the avatar's hold their weapon's straight up into their own necks, it's odd. They're also to scale, everything is a normal size, and the swinging animations are fine. Nothing really suffered, except for the forums, loaded with pointless rants...
  16. I just can't stay away from this thread, the debate is so tantalizing! I'd really like to point out how ridiculous the "consumer is always right" theory is. The consumer is not right, they never were right, and probably won't be right in the near future. You may think you're bending the will of the economy around yourself, but it's the other way around! It's just a generally false economic psychology. Sure, you're paying the company, but it's such an inflated rate, the profit margin for whatever company is in question, is astronomical. Taking computers for example, PC power doubles every 8-10 months at virtually no cost, Japan's CEATEC convention showcasing a 256GB SD-RAM device (Yes, that's gigabytes). Upon an excursion to the local electronics store, you'll probably find that graphics card you purchased for $280 a while ago, for $140 on the bottom shelf, while a processor of two to three times more power has taken it's place for the same price, it could even be more expensive. These are just the companies "you're" paying, making what I like to call "mad bank". Don't think because you're paying, you're entitled to the world, as much as I like to toy with that theory. Now, drifting back into reality, while that 7% may not seem like a lot, it adds up. As someone already stated, 840,000 a year.. may not seem like much compared to their total revenue, but that amount alone is probably enough to cover server costs alone, for all servers. It may even go on to cover wages. This leaves more money to devote to other projects, don't underestimate numbers just because they're small. Now, at the very end, I'm gonna light another fire by bringing up, yet again, that F2P is simply just not the full game. If you were to remove f2p, p2p could go on as usual, as was generously pointed out a couple posts ago. Any game expansion, if the full game is removed, you cannot play it. This is why I win =D> :geek: :ugeek: :ohnoes:
  17. Verac's armor does, though, have lowered defenses in accordance with the style of armor it is... Bandos, now, for the amount of your body that's being protected, the defense bonuses are ridiculous. You also have to consider, though, it's "an item of the Gods," so I can't exactly put my finger on it.
  18. I don't recall ever "trying " to look "smart" for you. I was voicing my opinion, as I would in any other thread. If you couldn't analyze my last post properly, I wonder what you've been doing with all of my other posts? Then, you expect me to insult you, and stoop to your level? I think not. I can say I'm done here, this argument was over 7 posts ago (Including this one, 8 posts).
  19. Well, I mean, looking at a pure with 1 defense attempting to kill say... me, with 85 defense, and corresponding armor, such as barrows equipment: The pure is probably going to lose, simply because his defense is too low. While that example takes a horrendous skill gap for granted, the sheer difference is still present. Defense, though, definitely doesn't work as it should, again, tweaking is in order. I'm also sure that Java script doesn't rely on dice to calculate hits, as every other skill in the game relies on numbers to function properly. I was simply stating my take on how combat/defense works, seeing as no one has a concrete idea as to what actually goes on. As for str, all it does is determine the maximum damage you can hit.. 1-X, I don't recall stating anything else.
  20. First of all, my goal is to patronize. Otherwise, I'd set a different tone in my typing. I do not type like an "essay writer" because I have to, it's simply a habit of mine, just as everyone else has a style of writing, I have mine. I've seen people below, or at the age of 15 that are far more articulate than a person over the age of 20. I do stand up comedy, indeed: "Two men are exiting a bar through the back door, they walk into the dark ally when a mugger approaches the, asking for their money. The two men grudgingly pull out there wallets, and begin pulling out their money, when suddenly, one of the two men hands the other a twenty and says "There's what I owed you." I did not vote for George Bush, nor was I pleased with his term in Presidency, as much as I dreadfully dislike politics. While America does, indeed, garner a rather poor educational system, much can be achieved with a proper application of determination. Most American's simply just don't care. This.^ And this.^ As well as this.^ To close my argument, again, I point out that all you have left are petty personal attacks. You play the same game as I, yet, you attempt to insult me though you're in the same boat? To use an English term, you seem like a child.
  21. Why is it worth arguing with you if you read nothing that I type? Otherwise, you'd have found out long ago why I'm posting here. Also, nothing I've typed is beyond what you'd be required to produce in your freshman year "Comp I" course at the local community college. Obviously the one who is trying to "sound" smart here, is the only person who believes that typed words actually produce sound in the face of reading. You'd have to learn to differentiate this in order to get into the above composition course. Now, begone, or I shall taunt you a second time.
  22. I'll state again, that I personally have no interest in what updates Jagex implements in f2p. I can also say that I've no clue why so many snobbish members see reason to horde their precious membership privileges as if they were made of solid gold. There's really no reason to care, and to be honest, those who do care, are probably in the dreaded "young, or not-of-age" group. I don't see what massive implications the addition of a "bury x" option would create, sending ripples, no, tidal waves, through the very foundations of Runescape itself. Not that I've ever trained prayer in f2p, but I can imagine, it would lift the grievances of hundreds, or simply get people to plain keep shut about it. Of course, again, TIP forums probably wasn't the best place to add this little tidbit, but I suppose In such situations, you get to see how people really are. I love to spark some debate, and I indulge in the fervent responses I get, you may get frustrated, but, that's the fun of it! I'd now like to point you in the direction of beautiful little piece by a Robert "redpaw" Jung, which quite frankly clears up these misconceptions you seem to hold about how people conduct themselves on the "intarwebs": http://www.fenixdev.net/welcome.php
  23. Unfortunately, Runescape does not function as other RPG's, or where dodging is going, as real life. Runescape works heavily on percentages. Attack increases the chance, in a percentage, you will hit your opponent in relation to the opponents defense, which alters the % to hit. Obviously there is some algorithm, or equation which determines hit ratios pertinent to attack, and defense levels, but no one really seems to know the exact numbers. As for strength, it simply seems to increase your maximum hit with yet another percentage determining that you will hit a random number between 1, and your maximum hit. Where defense comes in, along with defense bonuses from armor, seems to be split first into two categories: 1) You will be hit for damage 2) you will be hit for no damage I determine that defense, in relation to hitting, decides not whether your opponent will miss or hit, but rather, whether the opponent will perform a hit which causes damage to the player. Armor simply detracts from the probability that a hit will occur based on your defense bonuses, and the attack level/ attack bonuses of the opponent player. Damage is not reduced, it is simply negated, due to the fact that a max hit can still be obtained, even the highest player defense bonus. You must also take into account that armor is meant to prevent bodily harm, so higher defense bonuses create a better defense of the soft body. This is comparable to how a thick piece of metal can negate the effects of a small-caliber bullet. So, judging from this, you are hitting the play every time you swing. Just, armor is protecting the player from damaging effects. However, this still does not explain the ability to hit "zero" on an unarmed, and unarmored player, which can happen quite often. Which is where this theory, again, goes back to percentages.. which would mean that the player has natural defense bonuses from his/her defense level. This is why I believe defense is working fine, but again, it could use some tweaking.
  24. Oh ... my ... god. You sound like a tool. If that's what they say about education these days, I'm worried about the state of the world. I suppose a personal attack amidst a losing battle is all you've left in your repertoire? Point, set, and match good sir.
  25. Hey! Dunedin has it's moments, just not a lot of them... barely any, but still! Nice people, nice neighborhoods.
