Although the exp rate will not vary by much, training controlled is overall quicker(due to rune defender/sheild bonus), but only by a very small amount. There levels will come around the same time, but the space between levels will be quite larger. It ultimatly comes down to which method you prefer.

There are some better spots for purely training with no benifit of drops, however this area works quite well and if your well aquainted with it then it may be worth training at for prolonged amounts of time.

Hmm.. Mechscape may be quite interesting, then again it may be a lame version of Runescape with a si-fi theme. Personally i think Jagex may be over expanding, but this may work out in their favor.
