Because history told us that Andrew wouldn't give up control of his product because 1) He already has a lot of money and 2) he made you think his goal wasn't only about money. I agree, and that's part of why everyone is so upset over this. We expected more of him than simple money grubbing.

That's because the people who founded the game on those principals no longer have any say on whether or not they're followed.

Perhaps the person isn't upset with the clan, so much as the people running it. When trying to resolve things internally fail, sometimes one must make their objections public. And, yes, sometimes repeatedly and increasingly angrily. People are becoming increasingly passionate about this and many other issues lately. This passion for the game has held Jagex in good stead financially from year to year, but if the problems continue, if the lack of judicious treatment of their community leaders continue, if that passion from the players is ignored in favor of increasingly obvious profit grabs, then the players will, inevitably, leave. Slowly at first, but increasingly until the leaving outnumber the incoming. It won't happen quickly, and may not happen for a few years yet to come, but when it does I have a feeling that this will be one of the events over the last 10 months pointed to as the beginning of the end.

But how much faith would people have in Microsoft if Bill Gates sold off all (not some, all) of his shares? None. The company would fold like a cheap lawn chair. Diversification of your portfolio is one thing, completely bailing out is another. I wouldn't be surprised if Andrew's current position at Jagex was in name only, just to keep faith with the players that at least someone there still knows what the heck he's doing.
