Ye Olde Hegemony
I'm not exactly sure what you're saying. Different troops have different strengths in different situations. I don't see how that makes costs aren't just costs.
-
Ye Olde Hegemony
Of course it makes sense. Peasant armies are better in terms of fighting strength to cost ratio, but they have a greater effect on the economy (more people fighting instead of working), and they only fight at their full strength when on crusades or defending their homes. It's all situational.

Ye Olde Hegemony
Okay, maybe a cost of a 100 for a base peasant. Then equipment and training could bring the cost to 500-1000, for the most elite soldiers. Then if you have a feudal society, then you can get additional soldiers and knights, during times of war. Having an army does not incur upkeep, but can reduce infrastructure (or economy?) if a huge army is maintained for long periods of time. Sound good?

I was actually planning of adding trade routes as we went along. Basically that the only trade is limited between even European countries at the time, and the Silk Road. You'd have to actually create the trade routes yourselves. Also, my troop values were rather arbitrary, but I was trying to keep troop numbers from skyrocketing. If someone can figure out some numbers that would work, then that would be nice. Basically I am trying to solve the problem of people stalling in defence (by having people keep their defence plans intact, so I would just look at those), since it would be sorta strange if everytime there was a surprise attack, all the countries' soldiers would mobilise instantly. A possible change would be that knights would require upkeep, while peasants only cost their initial, but lower economy if there are too many out of their jobs for extended periods. Input please!

Ye Olde Hegemony
Btw, normal troops have an upkeep costs of 1/4th of their original cost each decade, starting in the decade after they were built. I am not giving any time to post defences, so make sure to keep me updated with the defences so that I don't completely forget about your great wall. :P

Ye Olde Hegemony
Yes, you could. Archi's post may mean that he is taking Norway...or Denmark, but I can't tell. If it turns out he's taking Denmark, Mather can get Norway, so I'll leave that off the map for now. England seems to be open, so Edel wanted to get that first, so then Scotland would be free. If some of you could work that out, that would be great. Also, go wild with this. Found knightly orders! Persecute religions! Assasinate the Pope! Won't it be great fun? :P --------- [Hide=Map with most people except the people that are greatly confusing me] Iceland = Nex Scotland = Earth England = Edelweiss France = Icu Burgandy = Ross HRE = Rocco Leon = Dusty Italy = Trol Bulgaria = Grim Kiev = Dungeonal [/hide] ---- The Pope asks you to please send him a notice when he gets back to Rome in... 6-7 hours, after his vacation in the Carribea...Gibralta...some non-heathen place of vacation.

You can go ahead, but I'll start responding tonight, in around 12 hours. Btw, here are approximate troop costs. You can make your own unique troops, but please use these labels to give me a basic description. Also, maybe like "they are adept in fighting in forests" or "heavily armored and religious", so you can tell me about them. Keep in mind Mercenaries can only be hired for a decade at a time, and are only cheaper when invading and looting. Regular troops can gain experience over time. Also, you may create generals if you'd like, to control your armies. These will also gain experiences over time, and may become more effective. Your King or your heir may lead an army as well, giving larger bonuses, but they may be killed in action. Single combat, arrow storm, etc etc. Peasant - 1000 Mercenary Men at Arms - 4000 Knight - 15000 Mercenary Knight - 10000 Peasant Archer - 1500 Professional Archer (English longbowmen from later eras may be more expensive)- 4000

Nice intro Icu! Btw Mather and Archi, Norway was reserved by Trol. Wait nvm. I'm confused now, which nation did Archi reserve? His post was sooo confusing. :P

Ye Olde Hegemony
I was actually saving the Eastern Hemisphere for later, since there are still plenty of countries to plunder first. Not to mention you might be tamed by the occasional crusade (that's how you'll get your first glimpses of the Eastern hemisphere!) or the occasional barbarian horde from the east...

Ye Olde Hegemony
Errr, I have yet to figure out how to effectively put labels on maps. However, I based the map on Rocco's map on page one, but basically took out the smaller kingdoms. Could you manage from that? Also, I'll start color coding later, but that was just the base map. ---- Have to go to sleep now. See ya tomorrow.

[Hide=Ye Olde Map] [/hide] Purple countries are either tribal areas or the Pope (Should be pretty obvious which is which). Tribal areas are usually good places for establishing trade routes or setting up claims on the land, but they are not worth nearly as much as nations. Also, they may have fierce tribal warriors. List of countries: Iceland Scotland Wales England - Nex? France - ICU Burgandy - Ross Kingdom of Spain Emirate of Cordoba Italy (North) Italian States (South) Papal States (NPC) City State of Antwerp City State of Bruges Holy Roman Empire - Rocco Denmark Norway Finland Slavic Tribes (NPC) Byzantine Empire Bulgaria Hungary Poland Kiev Zeirids Turkish Tribes (NPC) Baltic Tribes (NPC) Finnish Tribes (NPC)

Ye Olde Hegemony
Holy Roman Empire will lose the parts of Italy to...Italy, while Italy will be composed of two states. France will lose Burgandy to Burgandy. ----- It would be nice, but remember that I don't know a heck of a lot about these countries either.
-
Ye Olde Hegemony
Yes Icu, you'll have many options at your disposal, especially when related to wrecking someone's economy. Also, I might include some royal succession crisis in other countries occasionally, for the rest of you to fight over. :P Rocco, I am changing the map according to your map, but I just like the format. Also note that the Holy Roman Empire, Britain, and France will be smaller.

Ye Olde Hegemony
Actually I think I will be stealing your old map, but redrawing a few of the borders. Will be done tonight!

Ye Olde Hegemony
Oh, the time period of the year 1000, but the map might not completely be accurate. Oh the difficulty of finding a black and white map at for the middle ages. ------ Sounds good. I'll make a map with that, unless there's a better one. Bigger nations will be split. ---- Actually it doesn't work that well. Mind helping me find another?

Manifest Destiny
I didn't even have a map! I made it up as I went along. That's why it didn't work. You should plan stuff before it starts.

Ye Olde Hegemony
...and the great kings of the age came with hundreds of knights dressed finely in plate armor, astride massive war horses. Their procession ended in the Citadel of Cologne, controlled by the illustrious ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, Emporer fREdrick ThE Crazed Hermit. They bade their knights to leave at once, before they grabbed legs of glazed turkey and goblets of wine, and sat down at the playing board. The greatest Emporer amongst them rose his stilt-like arm, and spoke in his quiet voice. "My friends, I have not been well as of late. There is no heir to my throne, and I wish no bloodshed to come of it. That is why I have created this game. The greatest leader amongst you will prove victorious against the rest, and will inherit my great kingdom. Before we begin, there are a few rules..." Ye Olde Rules No superweapons Biological weapons are allowed, but limited in power. Causes a loss in reputation. Be reasonable with technology. No one wants an assualt rifle wielding crazed lunatic. My decision has the final word, but I will listen to your arguments (in PM) How to Manage Thine Kingdom: Thine Budget Kings and Queens (players) begin with an income of ten million gold standards per decade Dukes and Duchesses (NPC) have varying incomes, which cannot be used for purposes of aggression. Infrastructure works the same as the previous Hegemony, except there are no more aid missions. (See below) Economy increases your budget twice as much as infrastructure, but is more variable and can change faster. How to increase economy: 1) Have access to trade routes. Currently there only exists the trade routes within Europe, and the Silk Road to Asia. You can attempt to form your own trade routes, which will then be given an "economic power" ranking based on their lucrativity. 2) Invest into trade goods by sponsering mechantile guilds, or funding trade missions. 3) Some other creative ways How it can be lowered: 1): Being blockaded, embargoed. 2) Putting an embargo on someone lowers your economy, as well as theirs 3) Random events 4) Losing trade routes. 5) Some other creative ways Military Annexation: Basically move in your troops into an enemy territory and defeat their troops. Even after the battle is over, the captured region may resist and revolt, so keep troops in the area and try to convince them of your awesome leadership. Peaceful Annexation: Does not exist in the sense of the word "Peaceful." However, you can attempt to convince a region of a country to secede and join your country. Be creative in the ways you can do this, but generally having a good reason for it will help. A warning though: the country could get a bit angry that you're stealing from them. More covert operations have a smaller chance of alerting the enemy, but will have a smaller effect. Managing thine Kingdom: Unrest People have many ways of being angry, and many reasons why they're mad. Here are a few: Religious unrest: Angry because of the difference in religion. Has a chance of spawning zealots. Quell through either tolerance of the religion or conversion of the populace. War unrest: Angry because your country is at war. Generally peasants are a bloody lot, and like war, but sometimes you may have some problems. Quell through victories or peace. Peasants revolt: Angry because of a bad famine or oppresive government. Has a chance of spawning huge mobs of peasants, but happens rarely. Quell through execution or improving living conditions. Managing thine Kingdom: Warfare Knights and peasants are all pawns in our quest for world domination. Of course, you'll need to know how to use them. Knights are strong, both in will and strength. Their armor provides them ample protection against blows from the arrow and the blade. However, they are limited in number. Because of their higher birth, many knights can supply themselves and bring men at arms, but only so many are there to serve you. Feudal societies generally receive the most number of knights, though their peasant quality is lower. Peasants are the low born, cheap and numerous. The rabble may only have their linen shirts, with little protection. However, with training and equipment, they can be a force to be feared. They only cost 100 gold pieces to begin with, but the extra equipment can raise the price up to a thousand gold pieces. Peasants have higher qualities when fighting for a more equal society, and usually fight best when defending their homeland. ---- Suggestions? I will work on finding a map. Sure, go ahead.

The Tip.It Hegemony v4
If everyone is interested in a medieval hegemony and me as the moderator, then I could go and write up some rules right now?
-
The Tip.It Hegemony v4
Why not Hegemony? I think the system I've devised works well with the roleplayish part of it, since you have to think about your decisions and how they will affect others. EDIT: Witch-King Flail?

The Tip.It Hegemony v4
The problem is that every game with a mod who was playing gets complicated when that occurs. You would be a great mod if you'd didn't play.
-
The Tip.It Hegemony v4
I want to mod. I would use Doom's system, with some additions.
-
The Tip.It Hegemony v4
I request that a new moderator for the game be chosen. I think that I would not be able to moderate effectively with the ruleset of this Hegemony, and I don't want to continue to burden you trying to change it to the Hegemony that I prefer.
-
The Tip.It Hegemony v4
I like Doom's system, except to make it simple, the moderator could basically do all the calculations, so it would appear simple for the player. However, I have some additional ideas that involve propaganda and stuff, so it has more of a real world feel, and would make it more fun to play. I would make it so that tanks, boats, and airplanes, as well as active defence troops would have to be created/trained before hand, and then maintained. This would mean that you could not react to an attack like in the previous game. The moderator would simply pull up the latest updated figures. Some changes to Doom's system: Aid missions can be done to NPC countries that want aid missions Aid missions can cause corruption in government, which is not a number, but might cause some problems if it is accumalated Research is divided into two different categories: Breakthrough researches are basically where the research isn't necessarily searching for something incredibly specific, but perhaps something into the future. This could be trying to discover gunpowder, or something like that. Results will be affected by a RNG number and the time spent researching. Regular researchers are research aiming at a specific goal. These will be far less affected by chance, and will generally have a set time.

I also propose that an economy grows slower (using a different formula) after reaching 100 billion budget, and then further up the scale. Otherwise we'd have huge inflation within a few years.
