  1. Yeah, I was talking generally when I said under and over are two extremes of the same scale. You might live longer than an overweight person, but that ain't saying much at all. Good to see you're lifting though, and at 5'8" you should look damn good around 150 - 170 with muscle. That's one of the nice things about not being tall
  2. I've been talking the people in the thread and skinny people in general. If we are talking about people who ACTUALLY have high metabolism, then I agree that they will have a harder time putting on weight. Doesn't mean it's impossible though. 40/40/20 means protein%/fat%/carbs%
  3. Let's assume a 40/40/20 split of calories, and 3k calories in general is good for putting on weight. I'm disagreeing that their bodies are burning calories at a much faster rate (the posters in this thread), because I highly doubt they actually have a high metabolism.
  4. Get any skinny person who says they can't put on weight even if they try, and get them to eat 3000 calories a day. I can guarantee you they will put on weight 9 times out of 10. Like I said, lots of skinny people overestimate how much they eat and figure they eat a normal amount, so they blame it on a fast metabolism. Or they'll eat a lot of crap that doesn't have any nutritional value, not gain weight, and blame it on metabolism. If they actually counted how many calories they ate in a day regularly, I'm willing to bet you'd see around 1500 calories a day. It's like the skinny person version of "I'm not fat, I just have big bones". They've never actually put the serious effort to track and eat in, so they'll just keep blaming it on metabolism. Hell, even with a high metabolism you can gain weight.
  5. The people who claim they can't gain weight and blame it on high metabolism just don't eat enough. People can have high metabolism, but people who say they can't gain weight because they have high metabolism never actually eat enough (and likely don't have high metabolism). If they haven't tried counting calories and eating 3k+ calories a day, they don't have high metabolism.
  6. Thing I don't like about BMI is that it can't really tell if the weight is muscle or fat. If you've got someone who's 5'8" and 200 pounds of muscle at 10% bf, then their BMI is going to be 30 (obese class 1)
  7. No, if everyone were underestimating how much they eat then everyone would be obese. If you're eating less than (minimum) 2000 calories a day, you aren't eating a healthy amount. It's simple, fuel in -> growth/weight gain, not enough fuel in -> no weight gain/growth. Subjective argument. A 250lb bodybuilder won't do very well on 2,000 calories, and 2,000 calories would make most toddlers fat. The figure varies quite a lot for varying body shapes and sizes You are talking extremes. For an average person around 20, I'm assuming about 5'8", 2000 MINIMUM just to maintain. Of course, if you want to put on weight then you'd have to eat more. The general rule is bodyweight x 14 = calories you should eat a day to maintain. Of course, this doesn't work if you are very underweight (then 3k+ cals to put on weight in decent time), or very overweight.
  8. No, if everyone were underestimating how much they eat then everyone would be obese. If you're eating less than (minimum) 2000 calories a day, you aren't eating a healthy amount. It's simple, fuel in -> growth/weight gain, not enough fuel in -> no weight gain/growth.
  9. Same. I can't gain weight if I wanted to. Translation: You overestimate how much you eat. Not necessary, but sufficient. Sometimes it's due to having very high metabolism - even eating 3,000 calories a day for a 6ft male with little exercise would not gain weight for them as they burn it at such a fast rate. Someone who is 6 foot should weigh closer to 200 pounds, meaning they would need more calories just based on their weight alone. Someone who is underweight is underweight because they do not eat enough to even maintain a normal weight. When someone says high metabolism, it is 9 times out of 10 that they actually over estimate what they eat. Blaming it on genetics or metabolism is usually just an excuse
  10. Same. I can't gain weight if I wanted to. Translation: You overestimate how much you eat.
  11. Underweight and overweight are just two extremes of the same scale, neither are very desirable. Good that you're putting on though. It's good to care about weight (within reason), if you don't then you don't care about health. Being 190 pounds isn't exactly unhealthy. If you were like 250...then yeah, be concerned
  12. Yep, scams flourish in times like these. My friend (the one who now has a job) had the misfortune of working with one for about a week. He thought it was fishy at first but he was homeless and didn't have much of an option, that is until we looked it up online and heard the horror stories of people working their asses off and making anywhere from $50 to absolutely nothing and even getting abandoned on the side of the road because they questioned their pay. Beware anything sales-related. One I went to was for asbestos removal. Beware of placement agencies. I was surprised because aside from pyramid schemes, I haven't really heard of many scams in my city. My friend has been looking for a job/applying since LAST SUMMER. A trend I'm noticing is there are a LOT more elderly people working at jobs that would typically go to the young people/students, who normally would be retired. I guess they either didn't save enough or want to keep working?
  13. Out of 30 - 50 applications, I've gotten two calls backs, one of which was fishy/a scam. Not very optimistic anymore. e: I remember reading this like a year ago http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2010/03/how-a-new-jobless-era-will-transform-america/7919/ Blurb: I can't remember much of it, but I found it interesting at the time. Again, I don't know much about economics so maybe some of you other guys can say things about it
  14. People should watch the documentary "Inside Job", I thought it was very good and straight forward. Personally, I'm not very knowledgeable about economics at all, but imo more bank regulation and higher taxes for the wealthy. And CLAMP DOWN on conflicts of interest in the government
  15. Episode 7 is up on torrent sites, webrip though so not the best quality. And you have to wait two weeks for episode 8, so if you think you can handle no new episode on Sunday, it's totally awesome
  16. There isn't really a logical argument that it isn't torture...
  17. For animal testing, the difference between testing and killing for food is that when killing for food, the kill is quick and clean (at least in theory). As for health care, heh, sucks to live in places that don't have universal health care
  18. Jesus people, come on :wall: ? OP OBVIOUSLY didn't mean jumping into a freezing river or trying to take a gun from someone.
  19. Now this right here is a problem. People who are born in poor, underprivileged areas and lives are probably going to be those people that get declined some rights based on their actions. If something like this were a reality, everyone would need to have equal opportunities and upbringings. Not really possible in a capitalist economy.
  20. Whoops, meant to change something in my last post. what I wanted to post was that assisted suicide kind of implies that it's for medical reasons. Although I don't necessarily see anything wrong with someone ending their life in general, in the context of the topic I think it's for doctor assisted suicide, not like, "I hate life and am going to kill myself" suicide.
  21. What does "redditor" mean? That story was like the only time in 6 months I actually visited it, and I find it pretty...ugly? Don't like the format. Yeah, people should be helped in different situations, but ultimately it's their choice. I mean I'd rather someone I know didn't, but it's not my choice. OP, to avoid stuff like this I'd suggest making the questions/statements more neutral. eg: Just tell people to post their opinion on: abortion GW Bush and the "war" meat eating anonymity on the internet animal testing equal rights for everyone self defense laws assisted suicide Uhhh, good samaritan laws maybe? Setting health care costs depending on your lifestyle I think the non-neutral questions kind of pigeon hole the conversations in certain directions
  22. I don't know how to read weird quote edits like Rocco posted, so I have no idea who posted this: That's pretty bold of you to say. There are illnesses where people suffer a great deal of pain, have to sell their houses and possessions to pay for treatment (that will still end with them dying and possibly their family being left behind in debt), and who it WON'T get better for. For them, suicide is the quicker and more painless route to the inevitable conclusion. Some people go through pain that you will never experience, and it will NEVER get better for them, only end the same way assisted suicide would. Except longer, more drawn out, more expensive, and more painful. If they do kill themselves, what does it matter to you? I suggest reading this, it was posted by a guy who decided to commit assisted suicide after suffering from a condition that he wouldn't beat. I THINK at the end after reading all the comments, he decided not to do it, but really it's a mystery. Also, some Gawker writer Andrew Chen tried claiming that he was lucidending, turned out he wasn't. However, no one knows WHO it really was or how it really ended or if it was legit. So just take it on faith and enjoy the ride or read it as you know, something that people have actually been through before.
  23. I think people are looking at the life saving one from the wrong angle. It's not about saving someone drowning in a frozen river, or jumping in and helping someone in a fight, or anything like that. If you see someone choking, should it be illegal to not try to assist? If you see someone having a fatal allergic reaction, should it be illegal to not try to assist? Or if someone is working on their roof and falls off, should it be illegal not to try to help them? I'd like to point out that in some places it is against the law to not help, and you'd need some Good Samaritan law to protect the one assisting. My two cents on two other ones 1. Anonymity on the internet: I don't want potential employers or family or friends to be able to google my name and see everything I post, the Internet is all about anonymity. 2. Meat No, it's the circle of life. Humans are omnivores, we like meat. Now if you're talking about treatment of animals, that's definitely something that can be improved on.
