  1. Last night I stayed up until 5:00am working on a computer science with two other guys. We're making a database using html and php, and let me tell you, it is really hard to do when you know little to none about php and html (and most of your code is copied from random help websites on the internet). Anyway, almost missed my first class at 10am because I was so tired. But we were able to work on it a bit more today and change some things for the better so that's going well.

Now I'm writing up the theory for a lab that measures the universal gravitational constant. My group is going to start the tedious process of aligning everything and setting everything up tomorrow. It's so tedious that it takes multiple days to set up, since you have to leave for hours at a time in order for the apparatus to come into equilibrium. And then if the equilibrium isn't aligned as it should be, you have to fine adjust a knob and then leave for another few hours. Gonna be a drag.

In the mean time, I'll be getting my quantum take home final on Wednesday. Hoping that's relatively straightforward since I have a bunch of other shit to do. Also have a linear algebra test on Wednesday.

Funny thing is, finals is next week, so I'll be taking a linear algebra test, and then a few days later take the final for the class. Pretty dumb timing, tbh.

Aaaaaand the Hobbit premiere is Thursday night, which I was planning on going to. But given the amount of stuff that will be on my plate by then, I may have to wait until the weekend or something.

  2. About 7 hours playtime on Skyrim, and really loving it. The only bad thing is that I've gotten behind on my school shit, so now I probably won't be able to play it for a few weeks. :\

  3. Spent all last night reading sections of my Database textbook hoping that understanding the reading will help me do the homework. Then I get to the homework and realize the majority of the questions can't be answered with the textbook. I emailed my professor and he basically said that we hadn't gone over it yet and that the textbook doesn't talk about that stuff.

So much for trying to get ahead of the game...

  4. Aaaaaand for the double post.

Went to see Catching Fire with my parents tonight. My sisters said they loved it and that it was better than the first.

As it was with the first, I found that the ending sneaked up on me. I guess maybe it's because the movie started off slow and didn't pick up for a while, so I felt as if I wasn't there for the first hour. So when all the action started in the second hour and a half, it felt like an hour an a half movie. My parents hated it. I didn't mind it. Was entertaining, and some parts were slightly tear-jerking. I'd say 8/10, mainly because it was entertaining.

    [hide=maybe spoilers]

The part I got teary-eyed during was when Mags ran into the poisonous fog. That was pretty sad.

I really like the actor who plays the Games Coordinator. So I was sad when he looked to be a bad guy. But when the end rolled around and he turned out to be part of the resistance, I was pretty glad. He's a badass. His role in that mission impossible movie was killer and in this movie, he did a good job. With that in mind, having not read the books or anything, the twist at the end got me. I was skeptical of the Games Coordinator being a bad guy from the very start when he was introduced to Katniss. But I wouldn't have called it.[/hide]

  5.

Bought Mass Effect 1 and 2 on steam the other day. About two hours into the first. Lots of dialogue, but I hear the games have a really good story line. So looking forward to experiencing it.

Fantastic story, and the (first) game also has The Elevators. Don't worry, if the thought of elevators gives you the urge to go postal by the end of the first game, you are not crazy. It's a perfectly normal response, healthy even. The elevators must die. Seriously though, the series is absolutely worth playing from start to finish. You get so much more out of the games by playing the preceding ones that it's crazy. A word of advice: When I played the first game, I started to rush it, and just focused a lot on the main mission stuff because I wanted to see how it all ended. In retrospect, it takes a very long time to play through all three games, and it is absolutely worth taking a couple extra hours to do a few side missions, even the ones that seem totally inconsequential. I found that what I did do really added to the story aspect down the line, with stuff I did in the first game even cropping up in the third game. Trust me when I say that if you are in it for the story, the third game in particular really benefits from a more complete play through of 1 and 2 (and don't pretend you aren't going to play the third game. It's everything they got right form the first two games).

The elevators suck though. But don't worry, they don't come back in the second game.

Also, I would very very much suggest that you absolutely do not look the game plots up before you finish them all. The games will ask you to make choices. You only get one shot to play the games blind, to not know what all the fallout from a choice is going to be. Don't blow that chance. If there is stuff you wish you had done differently, then you go back to the very beginning, and you play it all over again.

Dang, how come I didn't see this response until now. Thanks for the reply, Randox. I appreciate it.

The Elevators, yes yes yes, haha. I'm about 10 hours into it, and found myself pushing the main story line a little too much (like you said you did). So I caught myself and started a couple side missions for fun. Enjoying it a lot, too. Also, I really hate making decisions and being put on the spot in a video game, so choices are super hard for me to make. But I've never once thought of looking up the game plots. I don't want to ruin the experience, haha. I'm already thinking that once I play through the series once, I'll redo it it with a different kind of character (right now, I make choices that give me a lot of paragon; kinda want to be a renegade during the next play through).

I posted this in the Today thread, but oh well: I bought a few games during the autumn sale on Steam. Saw that the full Counter Strike package was something like $8, so I bought that because I want to try it out, and because I want Garry's Mod, which I need Counter Strike Source for (there were other games I could've downloaded for this req, but I chose CS). So I also bought Garry's Mod for like, $5. And then I saw that Skyrim was only $15, which was too good to pass up, since I have a ton of friends who have said good stuff about it.

Older brother also introduced me to Eve. I really like space games, and the graphics/scenery in Eve is heavenly. I may be able to get into it, especially if it means doing missions with other people. Seems like it takes a while to get to a point in the game where you can do stuff. But I may have the spare time to invest in it. I do find the fact that you have to pay monthly to play kind of a turn off.

  6. Autumn sale on Steam. Bought the complete CS package for like, $7, and Garry's Mod for $5.

Also bought Skyrim for $14, which was pretty rad. Maybe they'll be cheaper during Christmas, but I didn't want to risk it.

Finished a lab report today. Now to start on my quantum homework. Probably won't start until tomorrow just cause I don't really feel like working on it today. I know it's going to bite me in the butt.

  7. I was subbed to quite a few Call of Duty YouTube channels back in BO2, and I enjoyed a lot of the gameplay that came out, both competitive and pubs.

I've watched a good bit of Ghosts, and I really don't get much of the same feel at all. I find myself closing out of commentaries and gameplay halfway through just because of how bored I get. I haven't watched too much competitive, though. So if that's getting pretty exciting, I'll look into it.

  8. Going home for Thanksgiving break tonight. Unfortunately, I got assigned quite a bit of homework, which is pretty lame. But I'm looking forward to pie! Lots of it!

  9. I watched Pacific Rim last night. The acting was AWFUL! The dude who stars in Sons on Anarchy and who was the main character in this movie was absolutely dreadful, and the asian chick was equally as terrible. The dude from It's Always Sunny wasn't too bad, though.

Best line in the movie, and probably the most stereotypical line (which seemed almost forced), was when the asian chick yelled "FOR MY FAMILY!" during a battle scene. I couldn't hold in my laughter at that point.

Aside from the bad acting and some very predictable events, watching mechs and aliens absolutely wreck each other was entertaining. Pretty ridiculous.

    5/10 from me.

  10. Ran into a girl who I used to flirt with constantly (and who used to flirt back despite having a longstanding relationship). She asked why I hadn't texted her for a while, and I told her straight up that I did, but she didn't respond, so I figured I'd just leave her alone since she obviously wasn't too set on talking to me. She made the excuse that she had lost her phone for a week. She then proceeded to tell me she would text me and that we needed to hang out.

Given her track record with bailing on me when I initiate hangout sessions, I just said okay and didn't get my hopes up at all.

It's been three weeks since then, and she hasn't texted me at all. Lmao. NOT EVEN BOTHERED. I just wanted to post here because I am quite satisfied at my ability to not get my hopes up. Next time I run into her and she says the line she's used on me the most ("We need to hang out!"), I'll shush her lips with my index finger, and then say in my most smartass tone, "Don't say it if you don't mean it!" and then prance off across campus all gay-like and shit.

  11. Boy am I ready for Thanksgiving break. All my profs are trying to wrap stuff up before the break, which means I have a shit ton of assignments/labs due on Monday or Tuesday.

Anyway, I was on twitter the other day and saw that the Bioshock trilogy was on sale for $15 or so for the PC. Never played them, but I hear its a damn good series. So I bought it cause I felt like the deal was a steal.

Now I have too many games too play. 7 hours into Mass Effect 1 because I want to experience that story line (have ME2 lined up afterwards, will have to purchase ME3 after that). Now Bioshock. And I randomly Dead Space 2, which I don't really want to play until I've played through the first game.

I guess that happens with PC gaming and steam. You see a good deal and you go for it and slowly you buy more and more games but have less and less time to play them.

Still have to buy a game with a Source engine and Garry's Mod since that stuff looks fun as hell. Maybe I'll wait until Christmas break to purchase those. Heck, is there a steam Christmas Sale?

  12. Thor: Lord of Darkness.

It was pretty cool, I guess. I thought it was weird how there's basically a complete role reversal between Odin and Thor. Now Thor's the one thinking practical, while Odin is being all rash and shit. Was kinda iffy about that.

    [hide=Possible spoilers]

I wasn't really sure how the ending worked with Loki sitting on the throne in the form of Odin while Thor tells him that he basically doesn't want to be king. Where was Odin during all this? Was Loki just sitting up there pretending to be Odin while Odin was taking a shower or doing something else? I couldn't really take the situation seriously given that it wasn't clear what happened to Odin. If he was still alive, Loki wouldn't be able to have the throne. And they didn't make it clear if Loki had killed Odin after returning from the dark world disguised as a different Asgardian. Anyways, I was confused about that.

The final scene when they're destroying the dark elves with whatever little device they're using while Thor is battling the main guy was pretty ridiculous. The dark elves turn from being pretty crazy killers to dumb soldiers stupidly chasing Natalie, Darcy, and Ian around the buildings.

    [/hide]

Natalie Portman was looking good in it.

Overall, I guess I was entertained. 8/10 from me.

Oh, also, those darn grenades in that movie were OP as hell. And so was that one mutated dark elf. Lmao.

  13. Colors are eeeeewww. So bland compared to BOII.

I felt the same way about MW3. Boring colors.

From the YouTube videos I've watched, maps look waay to big for 6v6 stuff. Maybe this will change with next gen consoles and their ability to have 9v9 for all gametypes.

  14. I also went and saw Ender's Game.

I'm very invested in the books (all four in the Ender Quartet), so I had very high hopes for this movie. The series is in my top three series (along with Lord of the Rings and the Belgariad/Malloreon series).

    [hide=Spoilers]

I WISH IT WOULD HAVE BEEN LONGER. Yeah, a two hour movie is pretty long, but everything happened so fast. I felt the book had too much content for one movie. The biggest part of the book is getting the reader invested in the school and the battle games the boys play. The more the reader is invested in the battle games, the more surprising the ending is. I feel like there wasn't enough time in the movie to get the reader super involved in the game aspect of the plot (and I don't think it could've been done with the time allotted), and so the ending might not have been as shocking as it was supposed to be.

Also, I didn't like how Mazer gave himself away so soon in the movie. Ender's not supposed to know who he is until much later.

I also feel the role they gave Harrison Ford was a bit too dark for my liking. I feel like he wasn't that dark in the book.

Also, I don't think the computer game was emphasized enough. Having read the book many times, I knew the connection between the computer simulation game and the Hive Queen. But I feel like it wasn't developed enough in the movie. Plus, a big thing that annoyed me was that Ender did his training with Mazer on the same planet that the Hive Queen was on. This was completely wrong. The Hive Queen is on a totally different planet. Ender had to travel to this planet during his colonial travels to find her. He didn't just walk outside of the training facility to where the Hive Queen was (additionally, there was no former Hive Queen waiting for him). There was a good bit of time before Ender finds the Hive Queen after destroying the bugger home world.

I also think they didn't emphasize the fact that Ender's strategy in the last battle was motivated by him wanting to stop being in battle school. The reason he decided to destroy the home planet of the buggers was because he didn't think he would be allowed to do such a thing by the simulation, and that doing so would make him fail the final simulation. He was not doing it because he thought that would make him pass. Rather, he did what he did because he wanted to beat the simulation through some sort of loop hole, by doing something that he thought wouldn't be allowed, though it would get the job done. So I didn't like that they made all the kids celebrate at the end. In the book, the squad was more perplexed as to why all the adults were crying and congratulating each other.

As a side note, although Ender was not in the same room as his toon leaders in the book, I thought it was a cool adaptation to have his toon leaders there with him.

And lastly, I thought it was sad that they left out Valentine and Peter Wiggin's part of the story with Demosthenes and Locke.[/hide]

Overall, the movie was entertaining, and the battle school scenes, as well as the simulation scenes in the later part of the movie were pretty awesome. I enjoyed it, though it did not live up to what I was expecting it to be. 8/10 from me. I'll be getting the soundtrack for sure.

  15. Getting pretty annoyed with programming in python, especially when you get an invalid syntax and cannot see why it is invalid. Might give up and ask here for help... I've been working on it for 4 hours already.

At least python tells you the line number! Try doing programming with php and html, lmao. You know that it doesn't work if the webpage doesn't show up correctly. And that's all you know!
