  1. Except for the obvious fact that it is not fit for transferrence to all other people.
  2. Right. I'm confused as to how that differs from my definition. It seems like you more added to mine than disagreed with it. :? I think he just gave a clearer picture of the Categorical Imperative. I'm by condition a Utilitarian, but I don't follow it to its logical extremes (the hospital organ donation is a good example). I, for one, work backwards from a goal that I assume others to want, a stable and prosperous society in which a great many people benefit. Then when it comes to a serious action that requires a good deal of forethought, I ask what action would best advance that cause. A true utilitarian would have difficulty weighting the value of different individuals- feeding their sister v. feeding a person in Africa comes into play... There just doesn't seem to be any practical/common sense philosophies, but that's primarily because there is no such thing as common sense. What seems logical and fair to one may seem completely different to others.
  3. I have an onyx necklace, that is the reason I had one made. Took me 300k tokkul of my own work, so yeah.
  4. And ensure that we aren't part of that demand.
  5. yeah whatever u want  It's like writing a petition to the fire department to tell them to come put out a fire.
  6. Frizoid is correct. Reporting abuse is most effective when Jagex does not know the abuse is going on- that's what the tool is for. But when any staff member can log into any world and see 30 autoers, filling up their queue of things to read with numerous reports of the same people is not effective. The reporting parties are rather counterproductive in that manner.
  7. I suppose this may not be the best metaphor I can give, but think of it this way. You're a 4-year old who is a bit clumsy, and can't use a fly swatter, but there are flies all over the porch. Now, you do have the ability to tell your mom to swat a fly, and point to her where the fly is, but there are so many flies that your mom could pretty much take a swing in any general direction and get them. So, while you have the ability to go "mommy there's a fly over here", your mom already knows that the flies are there. Your mom could go kill ten of them in one swoop rather than picking them off one by one as you request. Maybe not the most appropriate metaphor, but when there is a large problem such as this, rest assured, Jagex already knows. The best thing you can do is not to flood customer support with 10 people reporting the same person over and over.
  8. Personally, I do not hold that view, though I suspect that local labor laws in the relevant areas have a great deal to do with the fact that workers there are exploited in such a manner.
  9. My source is someone that has the ability to look at IP addresses of people I report.
  10. Without a store to get rid of it, the actual dispensing of the gold to cash would probably be substantially harder, I'd think. But I know more about what's going on than I do about the stores.
  11. Read the link I provided in my initial post.
  12. Well, previously, it was people autoing to level and have high level pking and skilling characters. The problem has changed in nature to goldfarming these days. There are still autoers for the levels, but the banning system is more effective at dealing with those.
  13. Runescape has come a long way from its beginning as the dream of a college kid at Cambridge, an experiment, really, and a massive MMORPG, which it is now. It's changed the life of Andrew Gower, vaulting him and his brother Paul to their own spot on the "Under 30 Rich List" in the United Kingdom. With that in mind, we've got a problem on our hands, one that it will take a united effort of the community to solve. This problem is not what you think it is. It's not random players trying to get ahead in the game. This announcement, or whatever you call it will change the way you think about autoing and the people behind those characters. Imagine you're a young man in a third world country, or a developing country, forced to work in a sweatshop for 18 hours a day, sewing soccer balls and shoes. You've heard the stories. It's a rough life. This is the nature of your typical autoer. I've heard from a reliable source (and you'll really have to trust me on this reliable source) that over 95 percent of these autoers are from China. They work in large factories, sometimes by the hundreds, thousands, for a meagre 60 cents an hour. This is why they often have Chinese names. They are in charge of supervising these bots, who gather supplies in RuneScape, and trade these supplies for gold, and eventually sell the rs gold for cash on the open market, even though it's against Jagex rules. It's both frustrating and a little rewarding as a player mod to come to the varrock yews and report those players, because I know they will come back on different names and make different characters. I do what I can, but there is also something else that we can do. If you know people that buy gold on RuneScape for real life money, encourage, implore them to stop. It's that market that these large chinese sweatshops are exploiting young men and women, just like you and me, to work long hours for horrid wages to watch over these bots.. and all for what? To see our game filled, to see f2p go down into the mire with servers full of these goldfarmers (that's what they are called), until a day that Jagex might even be forced to shut freeplay down completely. But these people only thrive because there is a market for their ill-gotten goods. If everyone does their part in getting rid of that market, and supporting the programmers at Jagex in creating new ways to drive them from our game, we can combat this problem. 1up did a nice article about these goldfarmers that explains what sort of lengths are gone to to get this virtual currency and re-sell it: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3141815&did=1
  14. I don't have to imagine. :(
  15. God damnit, my only member character can't log in. And I can't log on to the forums to winge. :x
  16. Even with the stats I offered up, we have a problem with the person in the picture. He's holding a rune scimitar, which would seem to indicate that he also has 40 attack, which would give him a higher hp and a higher combat than the 49.7 that would start the fight. I don't know if it's still possible to use the dummies in combination with wine that lowers your attack level to get to 40 attack without getting hp xp. So even that seemingly insignificant detail makes it all the more difficult for this story to be true.
  17. And you're a jerk for being narrow minded. So... whats your point? Fact is, the community can get down right annoying at times. I was harrassed as a lvl 101 and as a noob lvl 20. So of course I'm not going to want to be bothered sometimes. That doesn't make me a jerk. It makes you a jerk for thinking what you do though. I'm not quite clear what you're getting at with the last part of your post- but I will re-iterate. If you think that everyone is beneath you, you are a jerk. That's what my first post in this thread said, and I'll stand by it.
  18. Can you kindly point out to me where I said anything but that I believe it easier to change the behavior of self than of everyone else? I find that argument absolutely insane. If I'm getting mugged and stabbed, clearly I should not have been out in anything but broad daylight with police officers sorrounding me at every step. Your argument is only true if one's own behavior is the infringement upon another person, not being infringed upon. It's up to the attacker to not sexually assault the victim, not the victim to stop being pretty. This was all fun and jokes, but your arguments are making me legitimately angry. If you are being mugged and robbed constantly, you are in a bad neighborhood. The premise of your argument is that something was so bad they had to change the way they play just to avoid it, and that's why they have their chat set the way they do. And if you say that and that alone is your argument, that's fine, and I can pretty much agree. But it's not. In only one of your cases have you offered this as the plausible explanation for the behavior. I've already responded to what constitutes as playing in the spirit of the game. But my stance is that if your experience with other people in RS is that godawfully terrible that you have to walk around with all your filters on, it would have a lot of merit to consider choosing another game.
  19. Can you kindly point out to me where I said anything but that I believe it easier to change the behavior of self than of everyone else? Edit: You yourself said that the sexual harassment was an extreme example. I believe it would be better form not to treat it as the topic at hand.
  20. Rape and catcalls are two different things. Rape is a sociopathic behavior, catcalls and whistling are poor taste, but you've got to be joking when you fail to distinguish between the two.
  21. My argument is not self defeating. You're arguing that the only way to enjoy a game is to play it solely by the original design, and if you're not social and outgoing you shouldn't play. Additionally, playing an MMO to have fun is defined on YOUR terms, not anyone else's. Why should YOU be able to tell someone else how to enjoy the game? Edit: And if you turn public chat to friends and only play with friends, are you somehow a jerk all of a sudden because you only play with friends? If you choose to be that exclusive, absolutely! If you choose to shoot baskets with a soccer ball instead of a basket ball, you are not playing basketball. If it amuses you, so be it, but it's not the way the designer of the game intended it to be. And I'm not arguing that's the only way to play, I'm arguing that it is the way you ought to play. Which is clearly the case, otherwise it would not have been designed in such a fashion. In hand, nothing can stop you from doing what you want, respectful or not. As for your remark about women being harassed, I'd prefer not go delve into that topic, but certainly if a behavior or style attracts unwanted attention, surely it's easier not to continue in such a manner, rather than to try to modify the behavior of everyone else? Life has no ignore button. Edit: Cowtown is a nickname for Fort Worth, Texas.
  22. Your argument is self-defeating. If the premise of playing an MMO is to have fun, and they have to handicap part of the game (namely the second M) to have fun in the game, you might as well not play. There are plenty of games for introverts. Solitare comes to mind.
  23. As opposed to what? "It's everybody else's fault because they all look up to me or want something from me?"
  24. And if i like playing quietly by myself and treating RS like it's single player? I'm a jerk all of a sudden? Or if I'm so introverted I just don't wanna talk to other people? I'm a jerk? For someone with such a high post count I would have figured you as having a bit more sense than the rest of the RS community. There do exist people who are constantly bothered to the point that they have to turn their public chat off to avoid having less fun with runescape. You act as if people don't bring bother upon themselves. And I'm sure you'll agree there's a difference between lilyuffie and Brolly2k2k2k59
