  1. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 ... 092429.htm Time and time again, these are the results of these studies. There have been previous studies showing structural differences caused by poverty, but this is the first actually showing that this translates into functional differences as far as I know. I'm still holding my breath that this will change the opinions of conservatives on their idea that "everyone can make it if they just try hard enough, no need for welfare, poor people do badly because they're lazy".
  2. Really? Really? I mean, I would not call 26.3% of the population that labels themselves, "Evangelicals" a "very few" amount at all. Sure, there is the evangelical "left", but THEY are the ones that are in the very tiny minority. That's just evangelicals, that's not even Baptists or whatever else sect that there is that believes in a literal translation of the creation story, and history of the bible. Also, a gallup poll was just performed and 44% of US Adults agree that the Earth is less than 10,000 years old. That's very far from, "very few". There is something VERY wrong with either that poll or the Education system. I'll vote for the latter. Not all Evangelicals believe the same thing. Just like not all liberals are card carrying communists. The stereotypes based upon a WORD are getting out of hand here. I know that they don't all believe the same thing, that's why I separated them from the "left" evangelicals. Besides, it's still not a far cry to say it's a lot of people even if you don't think people believe the same thing. I'll agree that the education system is failing, but the larger hurdle is confronting the ignorance of the Christian Right. It's not even ignorance, it is WILL FULL ignorance. If you try and educate them in the humblest of manners, they get agitated and lash out that you're a godless heathen, and then cite http://www.answersingenesis.org . Jerry Falwell's Liberty University isn't helping much when it comes to "educating", either. I grew up in a household of them, I went to an Evangelical church against my own will for 10 years. I know they don't all believe the same thing, but when it's a religion followed by tenants of beliefs, it's quite obvious that the majority do.
  3. I don't see how they can sneak if when they're #1 right now and beat Florida. Texas can sneak in if Oklahoma loses to Missouri. Erm, they beat Florida? They play Florida on Saturday... Now if they beat Florida in that game, I wouldn't call that a sneak. However, a lot of their games have been close (one being in OT). I'd rather Florida get in even with the 1 loss (by 1 point), they destroy their opponents.

  5. There are a lot of things wrong with him, a lot more than good, but I will say that he was good for Florida's economy and handled hurricanes quite well. However, he would vote horribly in the Senate as per stances mentioned above.
  6. Unless the Democrats can cook up someone good, Jeb Bush would easily win that seat. I'd rather not have the man that was responsible for the results in Florida to take a turn towards Georgie win the Senate seat...I don't like cheaters.
  7. I used NO stereotype. I said that Joe Horn got off for cold blooded murder because apparently he's allowed to use lethal force for possessions that are being stolen on another person's property. Another man got off for killing a group of teenagers in his trailer that were found to have twinkies in their pockets, and no weapons. How is using anecdotal evidence supporting the law in action, "stereotyping"?
  8. Yeah, that's the correlation I've been seeing. Sometimes that's not even the case either, because a lot of internships are gotten like jobs (who you know).
  9. Not true. In Texas, you can shoot someone for jacking your CD player. Joe Horn is a perfect example. You can even use deadly force if someone is stealing someone else's property.
  10. I liked the Kansas Missouri game. Anyway, just like I called a while back after seeing DeMarco Murray play for OK, I knew they'd be in the title. It should be Florida and OK. If Alabama or Texas somehow sneak in I'm going to be pissed off.
  11. I don't really get it either. It must be a side effect of introvertedness and a geeky lifestyle or something. Or they're still in secondary school -.- Just wait until they get to college lol (if they go). Their GPA's will plummet (well, not all, but most will).
  12. Yes, they HATE us for our freedom  #-o Here, experiment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_te ... ents,_2003 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_te ... ents,_2004 One is before our Iraq War engagement, the other is after.

  14. why did you get denied a loan? Erm, the economy is horrible right now. Banks are barely lending to each other and investors that know what they're doing, let alone investing in a college student :( Judging by my budget, I'm going to be like $660 short (if I spend NO money on personal expenses and only on rent, utilities, books, and food).
  15. A printer. That's it. Oh, and some help with college tuition next semester; I can't get a loan.
  16. Not necessarily, but I don't think any CEO deserves to be making 200 million dollars while they're laying off workers
  17. India is calling this "their 9/11". Many people said that Pakistan wouldn't attack India because of MAD, but I thought it was pretty obvious that the most unstable region in the world right now when it comes to terrorism is not Iran (where Bush and McCain were focused), but Pakistan. Even if it wasn't the Pakistani government, they still refuse to do any policing of the terrorist problem they have in their mountains. Their government is openly defiant to the US, it's very unstable, and they have nuclear weapons. I really hope India doesn't lash out or anything.... I'm interested in hearing world leaders' responses to see where this is going to go :|
  18. Sorry, but I don't agree with the Democracy sentiments on this thread. Just because the minority is small, does not mean that their voices should be silenced by the mob-majority (the problem with Democracy). At the same time, however, I think it's ridiculous to sue anyone over any of this, or fire an employee for wishing someone a "Merry Christmas".
  19. Got this from a friend of mine with family in India.
  20. http://counterterrorismblog.org/2008/11 ... oobama.php http://www.nsnetwork.org/node/1068 Do you believe yet? When Al Qaeda is using the narrative that, "The liberal media is out to get us," (the same talking point that the Republicans used), you know that they're scared [cabbage]less of Obama. edit: and on the topic of the election, someone mentioned that this was not a "landslide" by popular vote standards. I beg to differ because this was the largest margin of victory by a non-incumbent: http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/11/ ... -ever.html
  21. Lol, what? Yeah right lol. Are you a minority or a woman? Scholarships are not as rampant as people make them out to be; that is of course unless you lie about things like religion, nationality, or any other assorted things. You forget that somewhere nice to me is a local community college. :o And I am part Cherokee... Oh, how much? There's bound to be a ton of non-competitive scholarships for you if it's enough to be considered "Cherokee". I just wanted to let you know so you don't get your hopes up. So many people think they're going to get scholarships, but they're really aren't many out there for the majority of students that aren't competitive. I think I read in the NYTimes that approximately 87% of parents expect their children to receive grants/scholarships, and only 13% do.
  22. I apologize Bari, you're not like other Republicans. Forgive me. Honestly, I don't mind fiscal conservatism. Although I highly disagree with it, and I find it to be the "wrong" way to go, I can understand the stances and why people feel the way that they do. What I cannot be open-minded about is social conservatism, with not allowing gays to marry or issues of the like. That's basically what I meant when I said that Republicans would fare much better in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia with their "backwards views". Republicans seem to have focused more on knee-jerk issues like abortion and gays that most moderate Republicans and independents are moving towards the Democrats even if they disagree with the fiscal policy. I am open to compromise with the right on a vast majority of issues. I don't consider the Republicans to be the right, though. I consider them to be the radically far right wing party. Would I be unhappy with Harper if I were Canadian? Sure, but it wouldn't be that bad. At least they focus on moving off of oil, and don't question the validity of health care in their country. Would McCain be horribly bad? His views aren't that bad actually; I could live with him being President as far as his views. His judgment, however, is horrid. His health care plan was horrible, and he had no direction for the economy or his presidential decisions (Palin?). However, I still cannot understand why health care isn't viewed as a "right" in this country. edit: Btw, there are no checks and balances specifically listed in the Constitution in a literal fashion, much like the separation of church and state. The separation of church and state IS in the First Amendment in a non-literal fashion because no law within the state may be made protecting religion, nor harming it. The wall is there, in a non literal sense, just like checks and balances are there when the powers of each branch are listed.
  23. Lol, what? Yeah right lol. Are you a minority or a woman? Scholarships are not as rampant as people make them out to be; that is of course unless you lie about things like religion, nationality, or any other assorted things. How am I doing this semester? Horrible. The good thing is that everyone else in my graduating class isn't doing much better either. I have like 2 D's, 2 C's, and 1 B right now. After curving I expect around a 2.6 gpa for the semester. The average gpa for this semester is probably going to be around a 2.8 or worse considering I am at the average or above the average in every class.
