Got a new comp just in today! but a few issues..

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I got my 1k comp finally! here's the rig!

Windows Xp Media Center.

Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13ghz)

1 GB of ram (800)

Nvidia 7900 GT Pci Express

250 GB Sata HD

Heres my problem. So far everything is working great but the noise on my CPU fan sounds like its LITERALLY Mowing my Yard! Even if I close my door, you can hear it in the hallway!!!

Also, i'm having trouble connecting it to the internet, but thats a different story.

Anyways, my concern at the moment is the fan noise. I have a program called Everest that checks your computers Stats, such as Fan speed or how hot your CPU is and all other cool stuff.

As it turns out, my fans RPM is 6,700 to 6,800!

However, my CPU is only 14C or 57F, which is actually LESS than room tempature!

My dad says I just need to keep my computer on 24/7 for about 2 weeks to "burn it in" or another words, cuz its new, I gotta wait awhile and it should get quiet.

Other than that, my last concern is the temp. From reviews, people claim their CPU is 29-31C when Idle but mine is extreemly low to 14C!!! So i'm wondering if only 1 CPU is active.. and I have to go activate the other CPU too??

Help please!

Oh, i have that same problem, Kick it lightly and keep it off any walls because it's the vibrations most likely.

If not I don't know.

Your name is "bet you fail", and you're starting a business with your mom? I'm not even going to touch that.....

Don't kick it. Kicking computers tend to break things.

First, letting the fan break in may be a good idea but normally isn't needed. You can give it a try but don't be surprised if it doesn't quiet down.

Second, no, you don't have to enable the other core. Low running temps are a good thing and probably has to do with your loud fan pushing a lot of air over the heat sync, keeping it nice and cool.

After your 2 week wait (if you bother waiting), you could just pick up another (quieter) fan to install on the heat sync (just unscrew the old one without removing the entire heat sync).

I thought it was imposible to have components running under room temp with air cooling? If you think of it the fan are pushing you guessed it, room temperature air to the components.

There's noway that cpu is running at 14c. I think Everest is reading the motherboard sensor wrong.

Not neccesarily, from other peeps of info I gathered, it appears the CPU 2 core duos have 3 heat sensors and Everest is only picking up one.

Reguardless tho... 6.7k fan speed is insane!

So you're not using the BIOS to check the fan speed/CPU temp. I'd do that first, see if it comes to the same result, or if ur fan is set to like extra-mega-high or something. I just built my comp over the past few days with an e6400 and stock cooling (with Arctic Silver). It starts off around 14, but sure doesn't stay there for long. Within a few minutes it gets into the 30's, and once it's been idling for a while it hovers around 39-41. The fan speed is set to auto, it doesn't normally go above 600RPM.

Definately shouldn't need to burn it in. I don't see why you should need to leave your comp on for 2 straight weeks...If the CPU is cold, the fans shouldn't be working extra hard. They are either set wrong, or you have an fan that's going insane.

Got some great news guys!

I had to go to work (still here actually..) so I can't work on the comp to see whats wrong, but my dad emailed me, apparently the fan was hitting a wire.

Now that he moved it, its quiet as a mouse!

Also, I got a internet connection =D> \'

Now I jsut need a legal illegal copy of windows! Anyone got? :-#

haha, Lunix here i come!

Legal illegal? What is that?

Anyways, download windows if you want to, linux is also nice but less things work for it since it's a different OS.

Sigh..

Looks like I got more problems with it. The games I'm running are smooth and slick, fps is very decent. All games can be run on high settings.

However, after about 5 minutes in a game, the system reboots or the game crashs to the desktop.

This has happened on Battlefield 2142, Supreme Commander, and CnC 3 Demo.

Dunno what the deal is.. :(

For me, MMORPGs like Lineage2 crash to the desktop only if I start running out of RAM. Try reducing the game settings and check if crashing stops. (Never happened to me in battlefield through)

As for reboots, check if your processor or video card overheats, that commonly is the problem.

Good luck.

Hmm.. well I know the graphics card and the proccessor can handle it. I suppose I am running out of ram which is causing the issue.

I'll try lowering the details and see what happens.

Thx for the info.

Are the games fully patched? Do you have the latest drivers installed?

It's not about being able to handle it, it's about being able to cool down fast enough ;) Some video cards come with (VERY) bad, cheap fans. Same with the processor fan, my average computer temperature is 50̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâð, my friend's average temperature is 65̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâð. Why? Because his fan is made out of aluminum, and aluminum isn't a very good material to make the fan with since it doesn't transfer heat well. Also revolutions per minute matter, but it is rarely a problem, at least I've never heard of a problem like that. All I know is that if your fan FULLY stops or computer will stop receiving data from it, your computer will fully turn off and refuse to turn on unless everything works properly again. :XD: (I checked that one myself.)

Good luck.

When your computer is starting, press either "delete" button or whatever it says when your computer is booting, then enter your BIOS. From there you can check out your temperature, rpm, etc. If you aren't familiar with settings there and what exactly they do, make sure you don't change anything and exit BIOS without saving new changes (if you accidentally made any.)

Fans aren't made out of aluminum, the heatsinks are  . If he doesn't have this thing overclocked, it should not be overheating. The stock heatsink that comes supplied on the graphics card and processor is enough to cool the components at stock speed.

Defender, BF2142 just had a patch released today, make sure you have the latest.

Yea, that's what I meant :| I just didn't know a word for it in English. Now I know what it's called in English, thanks :)

By the way sometimes heat sink doesn't come with a processor, and you have to buy one, usually people go for the cheaper aluminum ones (237 W/(m̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâ÷K) at 300 K),than significantly more expensive copper ones (401 W/(m̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâ÷K) at 300 K) with powerful fans . Also I know if it doesn't get in contact well (heat sink with processor) then it will start overheating.

As for the video card heat sink, my 32 mb Nvidia GeForce 2 had a very crappy one (IF it even had one, but they are supposed to, aren't they :uhh: ), video card later corrupted because of constant overheat and I started getting all those strange graphical deformations in games, and colorful dots on the desktop and elsewhere. I had to buy a new one.

Also if it's hot in the room or the case is closed, guess what air it blows with... Yes, hot air, I noticed that in summer time when I tried playing Half-Life 2, computer restarted due to the overheat. Opening the case usually helps, but some people think it actually heats up the computer. In my case, it's cooler when the case is open. Also try keeping your room temperature not too hot.

Og, your talking about an OEM processor that is just the processor and nothing else. I was saying the heatsink that comes with retail processors or pre-builts are fine for none overclocking.

About your graphics card, that card was so old it may of only needed a heatsink and not a fan.

I wonder how much heat that 1 teraflop 100 core cup puts out that just came out
