Maya costs a lot and if your only looking to start using 3D model programs then there are very good free programs which will allow you to do this.

Try blender, its a very good free program which allows you to do a lot of 3D work.

I've used Maya. Whether it's good depends on what you want it for, I found Maya to be more focused on animation - which I wasn't into. I found 3DSM to be easier to use for still renders. It may just be that Maya has a steeper learning curve.

What fool would pay 5000$ for a license anyways?

Companies pay it all the time. If the company wants to do powerfull rendering they want the best program, and Maya is the best.

I have used it before but I found it hard to learn so I stopped after like 15mins.

I think he was saying which fool would pay for it, implying that someone who's not a fool will not pay for it...but have it anyway. Of course that's not an option for companies thanks to audits.

Well Lightwave 3D is like $3000 too, and that is used for similar things (mostly animation). Anyways I have a friend who has the program, and I was wondering if I should bother to travel an hour to go check it out. But thanks Parabola, yeah, I'm looking for more still rendering, so Blender sounds good, I tried getting it once and the download failed me. :XD: I've been using mostly CAD.

To answer the question I've never used maya (C4D I enjoy and dabbled in 3DSM) but I belive its much more complex than C4D/3DSM/ect. Don't know if you would wanna get into it.

If you want the best it has to be Maya. The Personal Learning edition puts the Maya logo over all your projects but I wouldnt think thats a big deal for trying it out. The licence is crazy expensive so it might be better to move on after you have more experience. I use it a lot for school and I really enjoy it. It all comes down to personal preference. The other programs that are mentioned above are great too.
