April 10, 200719 yr Ive heard about it, but what does it actually do? Is it worth downloading? If so where from? Could someone please help me out, if you need computer specs or anything just ask, just mainly looking for where i can download it if it sounds decent enough :anxious:
April 10, 200719 yr Linux is an operating system. It is not a single 'it' as there are many types of linux. Do you know how to install a new operating system? Create partitions? Dual boot? If not, dont bother with linux
April 10, 200719 yr Installing something like ubuntu can be very easy, it's just point and click. The problems arise when something breaks and leaves your installation or whole machine useless (including the windows partition). An example being the last set of upgrades Ubuntu did on my laptop. I didn't notice it was upgrading the kernel and it decided to edit GRUB in the process, leaving the machine unbootable until I fixed it. Not something a newbie will deal well with. You can download the Ubuntu cd and just run it as a live cd without installing it if you just want to browse around and see what it's like. It'll be a bit a slower than actually installing it on your machine but it will give you a good idea how things work.

If you still dont understand look up operating system on wikipedia. Its definately worth downloading, but it might not be for you. Look into the different distro's that are out there. (More then likely you'll end up staying with Windows) You can download Linux from tons of sites. Heres Wikipedia's list of distro's. Its best if you choose one and then look at it homepage. The specs needed will be stated on the distro's homepage. Hope I helped.
