He let out a long sigh as he let himself fall down on the leather-clad bench at the back of the train. It was only April, but the past few days had been warmer than he had ever thought possible this early in the year. Even now, with the setting sun painting a wide orange band across the horizon the temperature was still high enough to make him sweat simply from dragging around a bag full of clothes. The bag was now resting in the overhead compartment, but he was still panting slightly from the effort of getting it in there. He slowly seemed to sink into the orange leather as the train started moving westward. He absentmindedly scanned the rest of the train car. It was rather sparsely populated. A family with two children. Some students who, like him, had returned to their parents for the weekend for free food and clean clothes, and to his right, on the bench across the isle, a bombshell.

Her blonde hair, cropped close to the base of her skull, seemed to light up in the last rays of sunlight. She was one of the few women he knew could make his heart skip a beat on sight. Being taken completely by surprise, it skipped several. It had been nearly two years since he last saw her. She hadn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t changed one bit. She was still the pale, thin vision of beauty that he had fallen so head over heels for years ago. Still, some small differences were visible. Her hair was cut short, she wore glasses, and a small tattoo of a curled-up snake was visible on her right shoulder blade, interrupted by the strap of her black tank top. She didn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t seem to have noticed him coming in and sitting down. She was staring intently at the stack of papers in her lap. He could see the stack of papers in her lap. The headlines showed the logo of the university of Amsterdam and mentioned the name Popper. It sounded familiar but he couldn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t bring himself further than that.

The train quietly rolled across the country. He stole as many glances at her as he dared, but she didn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t respond. As the view outside changed from fields to city to forest to city again to wetlands to office buildings, all she did was read. Finally the train reached its destination, Schiphol airport. The sky was just beyond the horizon as the train raced into the tunnel, the brief moment of twilight where the sun is already beyond the horizon but still close enough to ward off the darkness for a few more minutes. Twilight gave way to the darkness of the tunnel, which lasted about ten seconds before it gave away to the bright underground platforms of Schiphol train station.

She got out before he did, immediately crossing the bright white tiles of the platform and heading for the escalator. He sighed in disappointment, waiting until she completely disappeared from view. He̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢d probably never see her again. He dragged his bag over to the black bench, collapsing wearily onto it. As he waited for his train to arrive he tried to recover from the experience of an hour of sitting next to her.

Then he felt a hand on his shoulder. Immediately his eyes darted up, and his breath caught in his throat. She was smiling at him. ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬ÅHey̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâæ I saw you in the train, but I guess you didn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t see me̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâæÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ
