Monkey Madness demon

I nearly died twice on the demon, b/c my food couldn't heal me as fast as the demon was hitting. I proceeded just as the guide instructed, using protect from magic prayer and meleeing in full rune/dragon. Spec'd it 4 times with ddp, and switched to my whip. Did a total of about 20 damage (less than the gnomes) then got hit a 30 and a 32. At that point I decided it was time to make an unexpected stop in Port Phasmatys by way of a 1-click tele.

So my question is: what is the safest way to kill the demon. I did not try the alternate method mentioned in the guide, which was to hit 15 or 20 damage and run away, leaving the gnomes to do all the work. If it helps, here are my stats:

Attack 70, Strength 61, Defence 61, HP 67, Ranged 61, Magic 53.

Also, is it possible to have somebody else there to "spot" i.e. to pick up your items and return them to you if you die?

Just range/mage it from a distance with mage prayer on. Easy enough. Face it, you can't always melee every monster that exists

Strangely with WotLK so near, I wished I could delay it a bit to push through that last TBC content in MH/BT :'(.

I know melee isn't the best fighting form, as you can see, my ranged is beginning to level out with my melee. Do you know for sure that it won't follow me and continue to melee? Casting snare every 5 seconds is a pain. Thanks in advance!

When you get in the area with the demon, run to the middle of either side of the area, there's a bridge there, cross it, and back away so the demon's magic attack can't hit you.

Wait until he's nearly killed by the gnomes (the gnomes won't kill him, because he regenerates) and when he's nearly dead, go in, and finish him off yourself.

Most monsters that know attacks that can attack from a range won't bother to chase you just to melee you. Look at jad, steel dragons etc. They know melee attack, but if you stand from a distance, they don't chase you to use melee.

I'm not sure if it was just luck for me, but when I entered the battle, I just stayed where I was, put on protect from mage, and ranged him with 50 range. He was stuck at the corner behind the gnomes who were hitting them a lot, so I just continued to range and had an easy victory.

for you, wear monk robes, red d hide vams, magic shortbow, about 100 of any arrow, Ava's accumulator, a unholy symbol, any boots (armored boots lower range bonus though), and the helm doesn't really matter. take half an invy of food & 2 pray pots to be safe. you only need 100 arrows because Ava's accumulator. right as you get there turn on protect from mage & start ranging.

GOOD LUCK!!
