How do I make a website address/ URL?

Featured Replies

Hey this is my first day joining and my first post. WOO!! I hope I can trust Tip. it..

Anyways I love making websites, but I can't seem to figure out how to make the address name. Example: http://www.runescape.com or tip.it (If you didn't know.)

I came to a site where I know for sure people know website design and HTML.

Can anyone help me out here?

I've done Invisionfree stuff, made a website, not the kind I'm looking for. :wall:

Hey.

You mean you want your own domain name? ...Instead of something like geocities.com/yourusername? Well if you want your own domain name, those have to be paid for  You may want to be a tad more specific in what you want. Did you just not know how to do it? Or are you looking for a specific way to obtain a domain name, with the knowledge that you have to pay for it?

Yea, how or where do I pay for it?

Hey.

You will have to find an available domain name and register it with a service such as godaddy.com or namecheap.com. If you don't already know this though, you may want to do a bit more research into web hosting and management in general before you spend money on something you don't know how to use.

Yea. Well I guess I better take a website making class first before I do anything else? And yes Tripsis I just want to know how to do it.

Hey.

Yes, well as Cruiser said, you should probably do a tad more research. Maybe do a couple test runs on free-hosting sites to see how you like it and essentially test the waters. Try experimenting with Dreamweaver, learn some HTML/CSS/etc. and see how you like it. Then maybe check out a few of the websites that Cruiser so kindly mentioned and get a feel for how buying domain names work. Then if you still have questions regarding this I'm sure we'd all be more than happy to help you out

Yep, that should redirect you to the main Adobe website. I'm pretty sure you can download a 30-day trial for DreamWeaver. I have it myself and it's a pretty good program for learning the basics of web-design.

Get a free site there and the more active you are and more you contribute to their forums, the better package you get, which gives you like more bandwidth, databases, etc.

Then you can go to GoDaddy (http://www.godaddy.com - I think) and get a domain name - www. [insert name here] . com instead of the subdomain name that you can get for free from HostMatrix. An example would be - www. [your site name] . hostmatrix . org

But you get PHP ability, and there's a utility for scanning for viruses on your uploaded files, some utilities that install PHPBB2 forums for you, making it extremely easy. Then you can go to the makers of PHPBB2 forums and get add-on kits for your forums (only attempt if you have decent coding expertise, HTML doesn't count) such as a "money" system that is a reward for posting on the forums, or can just be used as prizes in contests on the forums, etc.

Pretty good stuff for something that's free. Just be careful because they have strict rules and you don't want to get in trouble a lot.

Just keep my name in it, and don't claim to be the creator of this script, please.

However, you are free to use this old script of mine that I wrote like 2 years ago.

You could also host it yourself. If you install Linux on a free computer which I am utterly sure you have, they usually have a Domain Name Server. Don't know anything about using it, but whatever.

BTW, welcome to tip.it forums! I think anyway you can trust most of us... O:) :-w

You could also host it yourself.

Many home ISPs don't allow servers to be run on the connections. They'll make you upgrade to a business plan.

If he doesn't know how/where to buy a domain name, he most likely doesn't have a spare computer laying around and won't know how to setup and use linux as said server.

Alright, so much information! Thanks. I'll check out hostmatrix.com. I found a site named avahost.com. I'm getting the plan that costs $9.95 per month. At this moment I'm looking at videos that teach me everything I need to know. My friend is helping me develop this site. So far only two people are handling this site lol.

Again thanks for all of the information. I usually learn quick when it comes to stuff like this. =)

Serephurus, thanks for the search engine or utility. I promise to say it was made by you. So far it already looks like you put your name in it lol.

I won't be using my computer server (I think thats right), I'll be using Avahost's.

I think I pretty much got this all down. =)

Hey.

You are unlikely to need a plan that costs you a tenner a month, you'll never use up all the space/bandwidth you'll get for that price. Get the $4.95 one, you wont need any more. Save yourself $60 a year.

Here's a tip, always buy the domain name yourself at a separate registrar to the hosting space. Then you can be sure that you will always be in control and that its registered in your name and not the other companies. Also if the other companies goes bust you wont lose the domain name. (speaking from experience)
