Hardrive: recently, I keep finding the amount of free space constantly going down.. it was like 72g of free space the day before.. 65g the next day.. then 55 gb of space yesterday.. I did not instal anything. Probably some updates on small programs.. Wondering whats going on.. with the massive of space being used up..

microsoft office: Well its a long story. When I bought the laptop, it came with this microsoft office CD (Turns out that it has only one program on it.. and it is microsoft onenote 07) when i go on microsoft programs like word of powerpoint, I typed in the CD key and it didn't work. (Later i realized i typed the Q wrong) Bascially I uninstalled microsoft office 07 from my system thinking that the CD that came with the laptop has the whole thing and i can reinstall it. It turned out tat it didn't. So i used my thinkpad backup program to retrieve my stuff from like 5 days ago. I went back to where the microsoft folder is, and found that size of the folder is around the same size as the orginal (around 550 mb) And all those program's icons are there too. Unfortunately, I tried to open some of these programs, they keep poping up boxes like " the last session failed, do you want to start in safe mode" and "your system space or memory is too low and can't continue the process"

I kind of gave up with fixing these problems and is hopeing you guys know where i can download the whole thing. I have the product key, so I am not asking for some hacked version.

Please answer ASAP, I need those programs :)

Thanks

Well I'm personally a bit confused as to why you'd be losing that much space if you're not downloading anything. You should try running as Disk Cleanup (Start Menu -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup). You may also want to try a program like CCleaner to get rid of old temp file and registry entries, etc. Hope that helps some.

As for Microsoft Office 07, have you tried getting it from the Microsoft website? It seems like you would be able to download a trial version from there at least, and if you have a CD key, you "should" be able to activate it and get the full version.

P.S. - You should create a system restore point before you run CCleaner.

Using SpaceMonger to look into what is eating your hard drive space would be useful. Then you can look into the files that are growing and take care of them more directly.

Contacting the company you got the laptop from would probably be the best place to start looking for a replacement CD for Office. If it came as part of the system you should be able to get a replacement installation cd for free or just the cost of shipping. Trying what Brandon suggested with the trial software may also work.

nope, its not working.. I download the trial, and tried to enter the product key, didn't work.

First, how would I know which version of office i had? Cause i have a feeling that the product key on the cd case is only for the OneNote program. Which could mean I will never know my original product key on the comp.

Second, does anyone know where I can varify my product key through entering? Cause the one on microsoft website keeps checking my trial version and keeps saying, it valid. But I want to check my product key on my case..

If you post a screen shot of the Spacemonger window (after running it and getting all the colored boxes) we should be able to help you figure out what is taking up space.

ok.. i think there is a virus in my computer. It eating around 3gb per hour. My friend think it is a wurm, but i don not want to take any chances. This is refering back to my original post about losing hardrive space.

Ok, my option on thinkpad..

There is a think button i can press on the start of setup.. within one of the options from thinkpad, i can restore my computer to the state when it came out of factory. It says everything i added and created will be lost. Thats the least of my worry at the moment (my own stuff) What i am afraid is that it will also take away window vista which is a legi program. I do not want to go through another big setup.

So do you guys think i should restore it to factory state? (thinkadvantage doesn't say if it will erase vista)

Plz reply, if i am gonna do this, i need to do it soon because that (w/e virus it is) is eatting away

It will revert back to whatever it came from the factor with. If you upgraded it to Vista from the version of XP it came with, it will revert to XP. If it came with Vista from the factory, that is what it will revert to.

Have you tried running any kind of virus or spyware scans to see if it will clean up the virus? Tried starting up in safe mode to see if space is still eaten away?

No, don't restore it. Just a note: You will not lose Vista, what this means is that it will restore the computer to the state in which you got it. This could get you your Office back if it came pre-installed.

If you think it's a virus, scan with your virus scanner and spyware scanners.

AVG Free is a good anti-virus program. Ad-aware and Spybot are good free anti=spyware programs.

I believe so, but you still need to download some antivirus and antispyware software ASAP and scan just to be safe.

He will not have to scn with them because it would have removed everything. Akthough your right, he needs to install one asap.

Since you just restored it, all of your Windows updates are gone, re-download them, it will fix many security holes.

I restore the whole thing.. it begins with 94.4 gb of hardive free.. I pluged onto the internet for like 5 mins.. unpluged.. then realized my hardrive free space is constantly decreasing.. now it is 92.5.. would a windo update take up 2 gb of space? or is there something wrong?? and the decrease in hardrive, is constant.. so it was 94.4, thne 94.3.. so on..

It could very well take up 2GBs of space if you start including the office updates in.

If you went online for 5 minutes without a patched Windows installation and no anti-virus programs, you may likely have a virus already.

The first thing you do with a new windows installation is to install all windows updates, then download anti-virus. Don't check here, or your email or something before that (not saying you did but thats how most people do it).

You could have done what cruiser suggested already and post a screenshot of the windows spacemonger gives you. Then we can see what it taking up the space.

I have not went online on the laptop yet.. as in.. no email or any of this forum thing.. only windows update and norten update.. right now.. i've lost 2.3 gb of free space.. which could be just the updates..

could it be a worm that got into my thinkvantage thing when i reinstalled it with it? I have ibm thinkpad which comes with this feature.. of reinstalling the system as if it came out of factory.. My friend's theory is that when u resintall the thing and it deletes away all my work, it should have formated c drive.. However, he said there is a chance that the worm got into the thinkvantage doc which is preloaded into the laptop..

as for the spacemonger thing, i will download it as soon as i figure out wats going on, cause i dont want anything else in yet..

any ideas?

SpaceMonger will be the least work. It'll give us a better idea of what's happening.. we can't exactly figure out ANYTHING from what you've given us. :/
