1.0 - Introduction

With the huge update to Pest Control, a lot of things have changed:

Boats

locationsdn1.jpg

There are now 3 different boats, one for lvl 40+, one for lvl 70+ and one for lvl 100+. A higher level CAN use a lower level boat. There are multiple points given out per round, but you still earn the same amount of gp per round (cmb level x 10).

Beginner Boat - 2 Points won per round

Intermediate Boat - 3 Points won per round

Veteran Boat - 4 Points won per round

As the Boat's requirements get higher, the round difficulty (e.g. pests, portals' defence) also increases.

Pests

The pests now vary in difficulty, depending upon which boat you choose - defensive strategies and proper teamwork have become crucial.

Portal Shields

Portals now have shields upon them, stopping players from having super-quick rounds. The shields go down randomly one after each other (more explained later)

Experience

Experience has been reduced per point, but multiple points are won per round (read above). Overall, the exp-per-hour has been greatly reduced.

NOTE:

The Pests mentioned in this guide are of the Veteran level, the other boats can be expected to have lower-level pests. The round strategy is also generally the same, but easier.

2.0 - Group Methods

a. Worlds

World 144 is currently the official PC world and world 78 also works sometimes. Most high-level clans use their own worlds though.

b. Clans:

The PC Clans that had lvl 100+ requirements are pretty much pointless due to the Veteran boat. Most clans I know have realized that to increase efficiency, they have to push their requirements up. Many clans are currently pushing for requirements of 105+, 110+, and 115+ - not to make rounds faster (you can't get faster than a certain point anyway), but to decrease the chance of losing a round.

Clans like the Void Knight Masters, Heart Unit, Zamorak Portal Slayers, The Academy, etc have varying requirements, so be sure to check them out.

For those level 90+ Players out there, there are PC clans available (e.g. Intermediate Pest Control) to help you get away from the lvl 70+'s.

Note: I will be adding more clans soon! All clans are having trouble adjusting to the new PC, so patience.

3.0 - The Pests

A really brief description of the Pest Control Monsters that actually matter:

ALL pests (except spinners) can teleport like shifters - not as often, but they will randomly teleport somewhere else. If you distract a pest before it has a chance to attack the Knight, it will keep attacking you.

Spinners:

If you see one, you KILL it! No excuses! Spinners heal 20hp to the portal as fast as a whip/dagger, and the only way to stop them from healing is to kill them.

Levels: Max lvl 92

Shifters: These guys go straight for the Knight as soon as there are gates open, or over fences - make sure your defenders are alert.

Levels: Max lvl 104

Brawlers: Fairly harmless, but remaining the only Pest that is solid (i.e. you can't walk through it), and so darn huge, they may block your path to Portals/Spinners.

Levels: Max lvl 128

Torchers/Defilers - These are the Pests that are responsible for killing the Knight 80% of the time. They cannot fire through closed gates, but WILL attack over fences.

Levels: Max lvl 88

4.0 - Winning the Rounds

a. Portal weaknesses and shields:

Yes, all the individual portals have kept their weaknesses indeed! The following weaknesses corresponding to each portal have been noticed by hundreds of people over time:

1. The Blue (East) Portal is weak to Magic attack styles. (e.g. all spells)

2. The Yellow (South-East) Portal is weak to Slash/Stab attack styles. (e.g. Whip/D'Scim)

3. The Red/Pink (South-West) Portal is weak to Crush attack styles. (e.g. B'Anchor/V'Flail)

4. The Purple (West) Portal is weak to Ranged attack styles. (e.g. all range weapons)

Also, there are now shields around the portals:

portalshieldry9.jpg

While a portal is guarded by a shield, it is impossible to damage. One by one, shields around the Portals are taken down in ANY order. The timings are as follows:

First Shield - 15 Seconds

Second Shield - 45 Seconds

Third Shield - 1:15 Minutes

Last Shield - 1:45 Minutes

Shield Drop Patterns

The following are the shield-drop patterns I have noticed:

1. Blue - Purple - Red - Yellow

2. Blue - Red - Yellow - Purple

3. Purple - Yellow - Blue - Red

4. Purple - Blue - Yellow - Red

5. Yellow - Red - Purple - Blue

6. Yellow - Purple - Red - Blue

Basically, once the second shield has gone down, you can be 100% sure about which pattern its using - so make sure you are nearby your next portal - but don't all flood there! You still need to spread out to keep up your defences, otherwise the Knight will die in the 30-second gaps. Keep distracting mosnters/killing spinners while you're waiting.

E.g. If the Purple shield goes down first, I will clear/defend the Blue and Yellow portals (as one of those portals is next).

You must spread out evenly to cover every portal, and you MUST help kill the last portal.

If you find that a shield-drop order has gone somewhat different than the ones above, please turn your public chat to hide, take a screenshot of the shield-drop messages in your chat box, and reply to this topic including that screenshot. Thanks!

b. Defending

Here is the key factor that most people don't understand - and lose rounds. With the update, defence is crucial in winning rounds. Teamwork is essential with this - you must evenly split into groups to take care of each of the following issues:

1. Close the gates! - The LAST person to go through a gate must close it. This way, the number of shifters teleporting through will be reduced, and defilers/torchers will be blocked off. If the gate is left open, pests will stream through and kill the Knight quickly.

2. Distract the Pests! - You must distract pests before they have a chance to start attacking the knight. The most damaging pests are Defilers & Torchers, who can range over the fences.

The marked areas indicate from where the Defilers/Torchers are in the Knight's range - you must attack them before they get to those lines.

stoppingline.jpg

3. Guard the knight! - A handful of people (2-4) should stand beside the Knight, and kill any attacking Shifters quickly. They are also in charge of making sure all gates are closed (if some idiot leaves it open).

5.0 - Styles of Combat

a. - Warriors

Ok Warriors! You should aim for having the MINIMUM (that's right, no lower) stats of:

80+ Attack (with portals, accuracy is a MUST)

80+ Strength (You need the damage)

70+ Defence (Warriors easily take (by far) the most beating - people with 90+ def can die)

Prayer(s): Ultimate Strength (+15% Strength) AND Incredible Reflexes (+15% Attack)

If you have 60-70 Prayer, I HIGHLY recommend doing King's Ransom quest, and finishing the Knight's Training Grounds minigame for the Chivalry and Peity prayers (these cannot stack with any other meelee prayers)

You could be wearing something along the lines of this:

Warrior.jpg

In the above image I'm wearing the Helm of Neitiznot, Amulet of Glory, and Proselyte Armour (really good prayer bonus). They can be swapped with Berzerker Helm, Amulet of Strength/Fury (if you have really high attack you'll want a Strength or Fury) and any top/legs that make you look good :P (but good armour is preferable). Fire-Cape or a Skill Cape also help, as you'll like the Fire Cape's strength/defence bonuses. Rune Boots or Climbing boots will also do fine.

Don't wear weak armour/robes that'll result in you getting killed by multiple monsters! Trust me, I'm 90+ Defence, and if I wear monks' robes or something, multiple monsters can easily kill me.

Your job as a warrior is to beat the portal to death (of course), but more importantly have quick reflexes, and kill the spinners the INSTANT they appear! Don't just let somebody else take care of the spinner, help kill it - the faster it dies, the better. You must also distract torchers/defilers before they are able to be in reach of the Knight - In my opinion, distracting pests heading for the Knight has a higher priority than killing spinners. Distracting pests will let the Knight live longer, spinners can be taken care of after that.

If there is a long pile of monsters in the spawn spot, keep right-clicking every few seconds and check for the word "spinner" in the list (it would be helpful if you can read fast).

If brawlers are taking up space around portals (as they usually do) make sure you clear them out - you don't want multiple brawlers blocking you from reaching the spinners.

Again, you have to KILL the spinner to stop it from healing the portal.

Weapons:

Dragon Battle-axe - This is a recommended weapon, but it will lower your attack level, therefore making it more difficult to damage the portal. Highly recommended if you have 85+ Attack.

Spec - Useful. +22% Strength, -8% Atk/Def/Range/Mage

Abyssal Whip - Highly recommended weapon, unless you're training Strength. Have a defender equipped...it makes a good difference.

Spec - Useless. Slightly more accuracy, negates 10% energy from opponant and puts it onto your energy. Don't know if energy drain works on portals.

Dragon Scimitar - Good weapon to train strength with, hits well, don't forget the defender.

Spec - Useless. Slightly more accuracy, (disables opponant's prayer).

BarrelChest Anchor - Yep, this is the brand new weapon from The Great Brain robbery quest that you've been seeing people swinging around with. It is the fastest 2-handed weapon a warrior can wield.

Spec - Useful. This attack doubles your chance to hit. A successful hit will lower either your enemy's Defence, Attack, Ranged or Magic level by 10% of the damage caused.

Dragon Dagger (s) - I highly recommend this, gives you 8 hits at poisoning and owning the portal, and very useful if you have high attack and str.

Spec - Very useful, 2 double-hits, increased damage and accuracy.

Dragon Halberd - This weapon's devastating special attack can really help with portals (it hits it twice) and it is a lot stronger and accurate compared to DDS's. It is quite slow though, and it can miss (you don't want that to happen in fast-moving rounds).

Spec - Very useful, can hit up to 3 monsters at once (when lined up), automatically hits Brawlers/Portals twice. Increased Damage and accuracy.

Dragon Mace - This baby can hit harder than a Dharok's Great Axe with its special, but don't bother using it on portals if you're under lvl 85 attack - it can get highly inaccurate.

Spec - Useful. Can hit extremely hard, but rather inaccurate.

Dragon 2H - It has an impressive strength bonus, admitted, but its tiresome speed and a rather hefty price-tag are its disadvantages.

Spec - Area damage, pretty handy for quickly getting 50 damage.

Dharok's Set Effect - This takes a bit of getting used to, but basically you have to damage yourself in order to be effective. Players either use Rock-Cakes (hits constant 1s, "Ow, I nearly broke a tooth!") or drop Nitroglycerin Pots (hits instant 25 damage, "Ouch! The Nitroglycerin exploded!") or, take all their armour off and let the monsters in-game naturally get them to low hp. Nitroglycerin can be found at the Digsite, and as for Rock Cakes, do Recipe for Disaster. This method works well when you have high attack, but try not to get KO'ed by random monsters when at low hp.

Verac's Set Effect - This method is very effective, and bloody accurate, I recommend it for efficient portal-slaying (though not many players use this).

Potions!

Ok, here's a secret to super-efficient PC'ing - You're winning at least 900gp per round ...so why not put that to use? An excellent way to go around this is use potions! Remember, potions come in 3 or 4 doses, and you only need 1 dose per round! I HIGHLY recommend using:

1. Attack Potions (+12% Attack) or

2. Strength Potions (+12% Strength) or

3. Super Attack Potions (+20% Attack, these really own) or

4. Combat Potions (+12% Attack AND Strength) or

5. Stat-Restore Potions (up to 39% restoration on Cmb stats except prayer and hp) <--I'll explain the use of this one.

In Warrior's guild, you can buy Attack and Strength Potions for as low as 12-15gp each! But the stock is most likely to be not very high, and if you want to buy lots you'll need to world-hop a bit. If you buy Pots like this, you'll lose almost no money.

Here's the use of the Stat Restore Pots - D'Bax Charge, THEN drink a Stat-restore potion, you'll restore your lost attack/range/defence back to full, and STILL keep your +22% Strength Raise! This technique works out to be more cost-effective (and performance-effective) than buying Strength/Attack Pots from players, but NOT if you bought Strength/Attack Pots from the Warrior's Guild.

I also recommend using Attack-boosting potions, as that is what will make you really damage the portal. Strength Potions replace the stat-costly D'Bax Spec, and you'll have a whole spec bar to DDS/Hally/Mace the portal down. Just try it, and watch your performance REALLY boost and your character potentially take down the portal by yourself!

b. - Rangers

As Rangers, I recommend you have:

80+ Range (You need the damage and accuracy)

70+ Defence (Don't want to end up getting killed by random monsters)

Prayer(s): Eagle Eye (+15% Range)

You could wear something like this:

ranger.jpg

You will want to go for the Purple (West) portal, as it is weak to Ranged attacks!

Weapons:

Magic Shortbow or Knives?

If you don't want to be bothered picking up your arrows, I recommend Bronze to Steel. You can also help with attacking spinners as soon as they appear, as you can attack them quicker with your fast attack speed.

Also, if you're specificly using Steel/Iron Arrows or Iron Knives, then I recommend completing Animal Magnetism and getting Ava's Accumulator. It will pick up your steel arrows and iron knives for you (as long as nothing's in the middle).

If you're using Mithril or higher arrows (for a bit more grunt), you'll want to pick them up - attacking spinners is difficult for you as most of the key arrow-landing spots are behind the portals, and you don't want your arrows spread everywhere.

I highly recommend Iron Knives (as they're extremely easy to make/buy) with an Unholy Book equipped (+8 Range). Knives are HIGHLY effective on the purple portal, I have found Iron Knives to be almost as effective as Mithril Arrows (believe it or not!).

If you are using expensive ammo, its crucial that you stand right beside where your ammo will land, as brawler or something blocks you off and the round ends, you'll lose quite a bit! Keep an eye on the Portal-HP indicators to know when the round will end, and pick up your arrows when the last portal has ~50 or so HP left (the HP-gauges can lag quite a bit).

Crystal Bow or Runite CrossBow?

Crystal Bow

Ok, so you're a bit more zeal-hungry and want something more than Knives or Arrows.

A 6/10 or higher crystal bow with a 160+ range bonus just doesn't seem to miss, as it rips through portals like...like...me with a Crystal Bow! (for the first 5 or so charges anyway)

I suggest buying a couple of seeds for 150-200k ea, if you don't wanna keep having to run back after using one bow.

Assuming you're level 90+ cmb, your first 12+ shots with Crystal Bow are free of charge!. Crystal Bow shots cost 72gp each (once you've blown 2.5m the first 5 costly bows and got them down to 180k), and your cash-reward per round will help pay off your first 12+ shots - making Crystal Bows virtually free to use. < that statement does NOT include the starting off fees, or time spent doing quests / recharging bows.

Remember, you also have to attack spinners the moment you see one, it really helps.

Also, with its long range, ranging off the towers becomes an option, as you can attack the portal before anybody even gets there! If you see any spinners floating around before people get there, attack them (they'll come floating all the way to you and wait in front of the tower).

One way you can really help is distract torchers/defilers before they are in the Void Knight's Range, by standing on the towers (therefore having an advantage):

The white arrow indicates the general direction the torchers/defilers will be heading in.

Red Portal (South-West)

redarch.jpg

Yellow Portal (South-East)

yellowarcher.jpg

Rune Crossbow:

So far this is my BEST choice amongst any other Range weapon to PC with - recent updates have made this weapon faster and more damaging.

Doing the Elf-Quests for a Crystal Bow, blowing 2.5m on it to get it cheaper, watching it degrade, then running your butt all the way to some elf in a forest heavily laden with traps...its just not worth it. Therefore I highly suggest you buy Mith/Addy Bolts, a Rune C'bow, and start pwning. It is now more than worthy enough for PC'ing, because its as accurate as Crystal Bow (add Zammy Book, and it gives +98 Range!), does a lot more damage, doesn't degrade, and is cheaper to use (than a Crystal Bow) with bolts up to Addy - all that for a minor disadvantages of being a tad slower, and having to pick-up your ammo.

My max hits at 95 Range are:

Crystal Bow Full - 24/25

Rune C'bow (Mith Bolts) - 27/28

Rune C'bow (Addy Bolts) - 30/31

Mith Bolts can cost 160-200 ea, divide that by 5, you get charged 32-40gp per shot (with range ammo you'll lose one-fifth of the ammo you fire, do the math) - which gives you over 22 shots to fire, before it even starts to cost anything! (remember your PC cash reward). Addy Bolts are 300-350 ea, so 60-70gp per shot (STILL cheaper than Crystal Bow! Thinking what I'm thinking?).

So a quick summary:

Crystal Bow:

Positives:

Long range - Range off Towers

No need to pick up ammo

Better for spinner-control

Negatives:

Costs 2.5m to get started, and tough quests.

Degrades, damage and accuracy keeps getting lower and lower

Needs recharging, and more than one seed (200k per seed, if you want to keep things smooth)

Runite CrossBow

Positives:

High Damage

A LOT cheaper

Doesn't degrade, keeps up its high damage and accuracy

As accurate as crystal bow

Negatives:

Slightly slower

Forces user to stand behind portals, making spinners a job for warriors

Needs you to pick up ammo - this can get difficult.

Shorter range

Chinchompas:

The most expensive alternative to Range, Chinchompas are basically multi-target weapons that damage everything in a 3x3 grid. Hitting the portal with these WILL damage monsters around the portal as well, so use it to your great advantage! I suggest Red Chinchompas if you want good performance. Normal chin's are 200-225ea, and Red chin's are 600-700ea, and you don't get them back after they go boom, so this method is not for the budget-conscious, and favors the zeal-hungry.

Dark Bow:

For those who are still too tempted to buy it (like me), you basically want this weapon for its special attack (+30% more damage on all arrows under dragon), but its regular attack is very effective too (+95 Range). It can also handle ALL types of arrows, but steel or higher are recommended (e.g. I max 15 with steel, but with spec I could max 20-20). Since it fires 2 arrows at once, its speed evens out to be about as fast as a Crystal Bow, and it has a long range, so you can range off the Range Tower as well!

Since it's so accurate, you also have the option of using this bow on other Portals as well, so help out :D. Don't get put off by what people tell you about it's slowness, its a very good bow for getting fast zeal.

c. - Mages

By far any portal's biggest weakness (especially Blue), but also quite expensive to train, I recommend stats of:

70+ Magic (req for Chaos Gauntlets+Firebolt) and Fireblast)

Ancient mages should aim for 70+ Magic (for Ice Burst)

70+ Defence (for Ahrims, but Mystic are option too)

Prayer(s): Mystic Might (+15% Magic)

You could wear something along the lines of this:

Mage.jpg

You should go for the Blue (East) Portal, as it is weak to Magic attacks!

Spells/Weapons:

Staves:

All elemental battlestaves, Ancient staff, slayer staff and advanced Wands are acceptable.

With a recent update, spells that you set on auto-cast will remain set even after you log out.

Most spells will work nicely, some that stand out are:

Slayer Dart - This is a relatively cheap spell that does good damage, quite useful.

Here is the damage table for slayer dart, with Level : Max hit

Lvl 50-59: 15

Lvl 60-69: 16

Lvl 70-79: 17

Lvl 80-89: 18

Lvl 90+: 19

All Blasts/Waves - Good spells, try not to use spells lower than blasts as their max hit just isn't high enough. Fire Bolt can be used with Chaos Gaunlets on.

Ice Burst/Barrage - The most expensive method of training magic, but also the most devastating in Pest Control - players can easily do 500+ total damage with these multi-target spells. Now that you can fire over most pests, and there tend to be a hell of a lot more pests per round, this spell has become extra-devastating - aim for the "middle" pest.

Remember, as an ancient mage, if you can't reach the spinner, you can still burst a monster beside it and the spinner WILL be distracted. As ancients are so damaging, a lot of people hybrid, wearing mage Robes (e.g. Ahrims) and a warrior weapon + defender (e.g. Whip + Rune defender). With this gear on, you can attack the portals with meelee, and as soon as there are heaps of pests crowded up, clean 'em all out!

6.0 - Rewards

a. Points and Experience

Yea ok, I know you know what to do with your points, but lets quickly run through that anyway. The basic formula for getting your xp-per-point is this:

E.g. for a 90 stat:

Old PC: (90x90) / 6 = 1350xp

New PC:(note: this formula is not 100% accurate, it might be max 3xp off)

Attack, Strength, Defence, Hit Points: ((90x90) /6) x 0.35) = 472xp

Range, Magic: ((90x90) /6) x 0.315) = 425xp

To find out your experience per 100 points, just multiply your xp-per-point by 110 (its 10% more if you use 100s).

For Prayer, you get half the experience as for other stats.

Remember, you DO NOT get any hit-points experience if you keep using points on only Atk/Str/Def/Range, and your HP will proportionally keep falling further and further behind.

The maximum points you're allowed on Pest Control are 250, after that you HAVE to use them. If you run out of membership, your PC points will be saved till you become members again.

b. Void Knight gear

Void knight gear used to be very hard to get, but now that multiple points are given per round won, they are in a way "cheaper" and faster to get.

reward_menu4.gif

When worn with the Void Knight Top, Robes and Gloves, the helms give their corresponding set effects:

Void Knight Meelee Helm - +10% Damage and Accuracy

Void Knight Ranger Helm - +10% Damage and Accuracy

Void Knight Mage Helm - +30% Accuracy

Void Knight gear gives no attack bonuses whatsoever. So if you normally wear maxed out strength boosting items (Berserker Helm, Fighter Torso, Barrows Gloves, etc), switching to the Void Knight set will result in your weapon being -19 Strength weaker - so it is up to you whether you choose +10% more damage and accuracy, or the +19 Strength bonus more.

In the same way, if you usually wear the maxed out Magic boosting items (Full Ahrim's, Barrows Gloves etc), switching to the Void Knight set will result in your Magic bonus being -64 weaker...so is +30% Accuracy really that accurate any more? I think not.

Same applies to Range...but perhaps the extra damage is appealing enough.

7.0 - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much experience can I get at Pest Control each hour?

ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâû A: If you keep winning your rounds, then you can easily get over 100 points an hour.

Q: Do I lose my items if I die?

ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâû A: No you don't lose your items. However, if you took any potions (or did Dragon Battle-Axe spec) your stats will be reset back to normal, your run-energy (not special attack!) will be reset back to full. Avoid dying.

Q: I have an awesome PC channel! Its #(channel), add it to your list.

ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâû A: Due to so many questions and concerns over PC channels (and the sheer number of channels themselves), I have removed the channel list, so please do not suggest any more channels. Use the !list command IRC to find a suitable channel. Thank you :)

Q: Nice guide, I suggest using (insert item here).

ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâû A: Just because I wasn't wearing *the* best items in the game in my "what to wear" pictures, doesn't mean that you can't - the objective is to wear the best gear you can afford for the highest Str/Range/Mage bonus. Use Ctrl+F to check if I haven't already mentioned what you are about to suggest.

Anyways, nice guide.I find that 78 now also works, since everyone is 100+. Im lvl 102, and I find exp/hour is AROUND 50k-60k. Another trick is that seeing the spinners/torchers from the main gate come from the yellow annd red portal, (SW + SE). Since they don't block anymore, you can get a friend to stand where they come, and intercep them. If nobody walk ove you, then you block, and they will walk up to the gate.
