Building a computer - what should you know?

Some processors (IIRC) don't use thermal paste for their own heatsinks, I know mine doesn't. You do want it for the heatsink though.

All processors come with thermal paste just some are pre applied.

Pre-applied/shipped with thermal paste isn't too good, good thermal paste (like the stuff I posted) will drop the temp by between 1 (Arctic silver clam by the minimum of 3) - 12C.

Even if your using the stock heatsink  .

Tigra00, good to see your checking the thread.

I agree with everyone else about the thermal compound, it gives a great boost at a great price, I just forgot to add it in the original order.

I love these sorts of topics when the people actually listen to the people that reccomend things, good work tigra making this a nice plesant topic.

Personally if I were you I would go with an Antec 900 posted earlier. It's a great case with tons of cooling for fairly cheap. Don't get a p180 unless you want to take out the middle HD rack.

Also as far as the motherboard goes I would get this motherboard. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128050

It's significantly cheaper and it would still have all the features you would need and you could over clock on it. The only reason to go with the other one is for SLI.

Also as far as the memory goes, you could downgrade some with out a noticeable performance drop, unless you are overclocking.

Also if you do go with multiple cards, I would go for dual HD2900s, they perform the best when it comes to dual card solutions.

Really truly though, most of the graphics horsepower will be wasted unless you are gaming on a moniter with a resolution higher than 1600x1200. If you are gaming at that resolution or lower, you might as well scale down to a 8800GTS 320mb.

1alebcay there is more than a difference between the two motherboards (the 680i and your gigabyte). The chipset makes a huge difference, the Nvidia chipset is a lot newer and faster. He could maybe step down to a cheaper 6 series board but I always say don't cheap out on the motherboard because if that doesn't work, then nothing will.

Your resolution comment is true for todays games but since the newer games coming out like Crysis and Unreal tournament you will need a very powerful card so it will not be waisted. The GTX may not even be able to pull off high at 1600x1200 with Crysis.

you can buy a pretty good comp for under $700 these days... maybe you'll end up changing a few parts but it'll still probably be less than starting from scratch...

Yes, you can buy a peice of junk (relatively) for $700.

I'm not looking to pinch pennies or go-for-cheap here. A computer is something you can use for years to come and upgrade when needed, so I'm not looking to go cheap and get a peice of crap. I want to be able to play my games and not lag to unplayability anymore, lol.

You could build something decent for near that price, but definitely not buy a store bought one for that much that would be any good.

@Blade: I think the GTX should be able to handle crysis at 1600x1200. I don't know how much the requirements are going to differ between it and bioshock but at a 1680x1050 resolution bioshock runs very well on my machine. I think with a video card that has near 3x the ammount of memory mine does and a superior processor/ram he shouldn't have much of a problem.

Also I would get a widescreen monitor if you can tigra. Its pretty much needed to be able to support widescreen these days and it looks amazing. My 22" widescreen cost something around like $250 or so probably, its definitely worth adding.

I'm also with sticking to the 680i motherboard. That way if you're really insane (in the membrane) you can SLI two 8800GTXs. 8-)

Yea, I'm thinking about getting a new monitor now. Mine is just fine, but it's like a 1000x800 res or something.

There isn't such a thing as a 1000x800 res for a monitor. :P

Its probably 1024x768 or 1280x1024. :P

Yea, it's 1024x768. I rounded 'cause I didn't know the exact numbers. :P

If the monitor is that resolution then you won't need a GTX, unless you want this to be lasting you 5 years. (But at the rate things are changing that wouldn't be a good idea.) Then also another thing to considder is all the rumors about 9800s... No one really knows (Yet) how good their going to be but there are different rumors floating around. But if you get the EVGA 8800GTX you can use their step up program and turn in your old card and pay the difference between it and the new card.

Also as far as the motherboard goes, the one I suggested is a newer chipset (The P35 is newer than the 680 chipset by the way. Read the first sentence of this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NForce_600 ) Also really, you don't need the 680i unless you are overclocking or using SLI. It doesn't really look like you are doing either.
