Remakes

i think hollywood does a piss poor job of remaking asian horrors. They lose the psychological edge that the originals have, clearly conveying the lack of in depth film making the industry has. I think the most obvious example is of Ring. Had no effect on me after seeing it in the cinema, but the original had everything the remake lacked.

Unfortunatley Korea's greatest horror film is being remade by hollywood: A Tale of Two Sisters. i doubt the americans can master the cinematography and horror merged with psychological drama and mental deterioration.

Completely agree. I cringe every time I hear of another American remake of an Asian horror movie. Lady Vengence, The Ring, Audition etc... all legendary and should/should've been left well alone.

Oh man, seconded. Most people said to me if you watch the american version first you think that's better, and if you watch the japanese version first you'll think that's better. Well sod me, the were wrong - the american versions were, once again, just trying way too hard to be frightening. Laame.

Good: Phantom of the Opera, You've got mail, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Talented Mr Ripley, The Birdcage, The End of the Affair, A Perfect Murder.

Bad: Cruel Intentions, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Island of Dr. Moreau.

"Metal isn't about violence or faggy whiny lyrics. It isn't even about who plays the heaviest and fastest. It is about invoking a sense of wonder and magnitude that no other genre can depict."

Totally agree with The Thomas Crown Affair. A slick movie and a cool soundtrack.

I'm a little surprised at Cruel Intentions... gotta say I really enjoyed it. But to be honest, I've never seen the original

The 'original' Cruel Intentions, Dangerous Liaisons, captured the essence of the novel brilliantly. CI got its hands on it and, well, Americanised it to smeg. Basically, they ripped out the soul of the story and pissed on it.
