I was just wondering what you recon is the best and worst remakes in cinema. Also tell us which movies you would love to see being remade.

 

 

 

What's your general opinion on remakes?

 

 

 

My own opinion is that as technologies and budgets improve I believe there's many past movies that can now be remade in even greater spendor. However, the general rules seems to be that most remakes are inferior to the originals.

 

 

 

Best Remake : Lord of the Rings (versus the cartoon) & Ocean's Eleven

 

Worst Remake : The Omen

 

 

 

Wishlist : Battle of Britain, Zulu

I don't think you can really count Lord of the rings as a remake of cartoons. I actually can't think of many films I've seen remakes of, I'd say the only one I can really think of is Dawn of the Dead, not as good as the original but i't's still a cut above most zombie films out there.

Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to offend with that. I was generally shocked though. I mean, the original was so cool and creative, but George Clooney and Brad Pitt? They have about as much acting skills and charisma than a damp table cloth.

In my opinion, remakes usually aren't a good thing. To me they seem to show how scared Hollywood is now to take risks on new and innovative ideas which is why they're trying to re-create past successes by remaking films that have previously proven to be a financial success ( or by banking on the success of franchises - Rocky, Die Hard etc).

 

 

 

The thing that I really hate about remakes though is the fact that most of them are pretty lousy (especially compared to the originals) and rely so much on the reputation of the original to get bums in seats.

 

 

 

Personally when I go to the cinema, or even when I buy a new DVD, I want to see something new, exciting and interesting and I just don't seem to find that in remakes.

 

 

 

Obviously there are exceptions to this, some remakes are alright but even then I still seem to be more interested in discovering the original on DVD to compare it with, maybe it's just me though.

 

 

 

On the point of technology (mainly cgi), I think alot of the time it takes away from the experience. The use of real props, stunts, locations and everything else just improves a film for me - knowing that there is alot of cgi in a film just destroys any illusion of reality.

I know exactly what you mean, but are there really no remakes that you enjoyed or nothing that you'd like to see remade?

Of course I've enjoyed certain remakes but for the most part they just tend to make me interested in the original than anything else.

 

 

 

That being said there are no films I want to see remade not a single one - if I like a film that much I'd just rather get it on DVD. However, I am really dreading the Harvey Weinstein version of Seven Samurai;

Ah, come on Bubs. You're overreacting a bit here. Ocean's 13 was fantastic. 11 wasn't bad either. And Clooney and Pitt are both quite good.

 

 

 

Scarface and City of Angels are two remakes that I despise. I guess you can see the Magnificent Seven as a re-make as well. I thought that wasn't much either. I'm not really a fan of Godzilla either.

 

 

 

Some of the remakes that I enjoyed a lot are: War of the Worlds, Ben-Hur, the 10 Commandments, A Fistfull of Dollars, The Departed, The Thing, The Fly, Cape Fear, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory. And there are some more, but yea.

^ A few of the remakes you mentioned there worked because, in my opinion, offered something quite different in the direction of the film. The Departed, for example.

 

 

 

I think remakes like that require some skill and I feel I can appreciate the work more.

Had trouble thinking of them at first, I see a few I would list now though.

 

 

 

I enjoyed the remake of War of the Worlds. I also enjoyed the first one though too. King Kong I actually enjoyed the first one (1933) more than the newest one (2005?). I did like the new one, just the first one was [bleep]ing awesome. The Chocolate Factory movies I enjoyed both a lot also. I like Tim Burton's style, so it was enjoyable. The first one was also awesome.

 

 

 

So I guess I am 3 for 3 with liking the remakes, 2 about the same as the original and 1 slightly less.

 

 

 

Oh I thought of one more. The Manchurian Candidate films. Both are great. I might go with the newer one over the older one, but it's so close I'd just say I like them the same.

 

 

 

Here is a list of remakes: Wikipedia's list. Just glancing at it I see 1984 on there, I saw one of the versions, but it sucked. I wouldn't mind seeing a new version of it.

Exactly, and i hate it when people who've never seen the original shun it because its old.

 

Another reason- Michael Jackson should run a chocolate factory, why did the make Johnny Depp Play Michael Jackson as Willy Wonka?

 

 

 

The Producers Remake was the worst remake of a film i've ever seen. It had its moments, but it makes Mel Brooks look bad :evil:

I thought of a few more. Dawn of the Dead, both old and new are awesome. Planet of the Apes, I liked both, but the ending of the original is better. Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, remaked with Adam Sandler as just Mr. Deeds. This is the only one so far that I think the remake sucks. The first one was pretentious at times but was good.

I agree with Planet of the Apes. I think the new version was unfairly slated, but I rather enjoyed it. The ending made no sense though, regardless of how you cut it.

Yeah, the ending kind of sucked. It was cool when I first saw it in theaters, because I was younger then.

Doesn't the remake somewhat closely match the book? Been so long since I read, but I know the old movie was very different ending than the book.

Like I said, it's been a long time, but I believe the book is similar. He leaves ape planet and thinks he's going back to earth. As he lands, everything looks normal, but it's apes inhabiting again (I think Burton added the "Ape" Lincoln Memorial). I believe this is the first time in the book that the reader ponders the possibility that it was earth all along, just in the future and then later in the future (if that makes sense). Anyway, I think the original movie's ending was extremely effective...as you say, one of the best ever. That said, I think it would be kinda lame for Burton to try to replicate it.
