I would get a CRT monitor, they're better for the same ammount of money. That is, you can get a good CRT monitor for the same price as you could get a mediocre to average LCD>

What's your budget?

What are you going to be using this for?

Why didn't you post this on the existing thread you made?

http://forum.tip.it/viewtopic.php?t=217731

because you have bad taste in music.

anyways, i have around $2000 AUD and plan to use this machine for graphic design and gaming as well as the usual surfing of the internet and such.. this system is around 1300 i think minus software but i only need a copy of win xp

i was looking online at amd processors and what they cost. this online store had them on special, i could get an ATHLON64-3400+ if i added another hundred..

would it be worth it? cause im trying to make this system last awhile so i think it would be worth getting a faster cpu and maybe 1gig of ram or something.. :?

Don't go for socket754. It's an abandoned socket, the one you want is socket939.
what does that actually mean sir?

nvm i get it now.. but it seems that the 3000+ has both socket options and the 3400 only has 754

god why is there no edit button in this forum  ?

oh well i guess the 3000+ is betttr anyway- i can always upgarde it later if i stick with 939 mobo right? :P

Do not get that video card (FX 5200). Not only is it from the last generation of GeForce cards, but it is at the BOTTOM of the last generation. For just over $100 more you could get a 6600GT (like http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 089&depa=1 for example).

It is considered by many the best bang for your buck. I myself have a Leadtek one, that I just bought, so I really haven't used it enough to give a solid opinion. I have had no problems with any games I've tried on max settings & resolutions though :P There are some games that the FX 5200 would struggle with on low settings.

If you got a motherboard with a PCI-Express 16x slot instead of AGP (two different types of slots that all modern video cards connect to), you would save about $15 on the video card, because they are cheaper in their PCI-E versions. You would also guarantee upgradability in the future, as PCI-Express is slowly phasing out AGP.

Correct, but there is a 3500+ option for 939 sockets ;)

more like $300 AU more :S i dont care about running games smoothly at ultra high detail :? and just from reading the reviews of the FX5200 it seems that card gives out alot of bang for its buck too.

It depends on what you mean with "alot of bang". I wouldn't be caught dead playing modern games with it, but I suppose it's enough if you're on a workstation.

well, what other options are there? im all for this "future-proofing" thing but surely there has to be an uh- cheaper cards out there..

He was talking about, instead of buying a motherboard with the socket 754, but a socket 939 motherboard (It says it, somewhere) and a socket 939 processer with it.

I suggest for your computing pleasure

mobo -

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 052&depa=1

cpu - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 499&depa=1

(GREAT FOR OVERCLOCKING, and socket 939 which can't go on your original mobo, but can go on the one i picked out)

Video card - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 038&depa=1

(Comibining cheapness, with the power to play all games on all high, and its the new PCI-Express, which the mobo I picked out uses. I don't think yours does)

RAM - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 309&depa=1

(Dual channel = fast, the mobo i picked out supports it.)

Thats what I'd go for. A 5200FX sucks, the least you'd want to get is a 5700FX for 110$. A 6600GT can run Doom3, etc. It's cheap, good..

The rest is your choice. It might cost a little more, but it will run alot better. Its your choice if you want to keep your old config, though.

Dual channel, which the mobo I picked out support

I'm not at all for this choice of motherboard + RAM. If you want a 'future-proof' pc, as you called it, you would want either 1GB of RAM immediately, or 512MB on a motherboard with 4 RAM slots, so you can expand to 1GB later.

Also, the motherboard (to me) is a no-name one, and the reviews I found were not very good. It also only has 2 PCI slots, and according to one of the reviews one of those gets blocked if you put in a decent PCI-E card (like you're planning to). This just means that you have absolutely ZERO expandability. Also, this is a microATX board, which means it's quite small (which explains the lack of slots for just about everything except USB and SATA). It's also mentioned that video card cooling will be a problem because of the way the board is laid out. This means you may run into trouble running that (rather) high-end video card on it.

If I were you, I'd try getting a motherboard from ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte, with 4 slots of RAM, and get 1GB of RAM if you can afford it, and if you can't stick with 512MB dual channel, and get another 512 in Dual Channel later. :)

True, I wasn't looking much at it. ALSO - if you do choose a new mobo, wit hthat some crap. Make sure its got a PCI-E slot, and a dual channel capability.

Try to look for a nforce 4 (ultra) Chipset in it, its the best.
