niner
That entire first Van Halen album is great. I think that even if Erruption wasnt the "first" (not sure he was in the first place) to use tapping i still think people would be amazed by it. That song alone inspired me to play guitar and listen to guitar/rock/hard rock/metal music. Now on to the original question. Bass - John Entwistle (The Who), I normally dont care much for bass but everytime i watch him play on video I am stunned. The way he played, standing in the corner by himself with fingers going at a million miles an hour, never looking lost, amazing. Guitar - Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow), I think a lot has been said about him already. Makes me wonder how he is often forgotten when it comes to all those great players from the 70s (Page, Iommi, Gilmore, etc), I think he is the best of the bunch. Guitar - Michael Schenker (Scorpions, UFO, MSG), give a listen to the opening riff and especially the solo from Rock Bottom by UFO. Find me a better solo if you can. If you like rock/hard rock or those neo classical players give this guy a listen (he was one of the inspirations for a lot of them). Guitar - Criss Oliva (Savatage), take the best of Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen, mix em together, and you get Criss Oliva. Ok maybe i'm overhyping him but he was a great player. He had good riffs, and he could play fast, and most important he could play with emotion (more than most players i've heard). The best examples of his playing probably are from the Sirens, Hall of the Mountain King, Gutter Ballet, Streets, and Edge of Thorns albums. How these guys (Savatage) never made it really big I'll never understand. They should of been at that level right below Iron Maiden and Metallica IMO. Electric555
Yengwie Malmsteen fastest player on the guitar ever.... Steve Vai awesome guitar players Joe Satriani another great guitar player...
Danabis
Yengwie Malmsteen fastest player on the guitar ever.... Common misconception. I'm not 100% on this, but I think Vai has the record for most notes in a second, at around 26 in a song called The Riddle. Herr
Also, just because he can play fast doesn't mean he's the best. If you watch the G3 2003 video with Satiani, Vai and Malmsteen, you will EASILY see that Malmsteen's playing is just fast and meaningless, the others play with much more feeling. Electric555
I didnt say he's the best..i said he was the fastest.. and from what i heard he took one of the fastest violin songs and played it on guitar....
Barking-Loon
Of those three guitarists Malmsteen is the fastest, I am 100% sure of that. (But there is however a jazz guy whos name I cant remember that easily beat Malmsteen.) Malmsteen is technically a genious when it comes to guitar. (A shame that he cant match his guitar playing with equally good songs.) Not saying that Malmsteen got any feel in hes play might be true if you look at him today but listen to the early records "Rising Force" and "Marching Out", particulary the song "Black Star" you will see that he has not always been like he is today. On those albums he plays with so much feel it makes my spine shiver. I think that hes going on routine and not inventing himself like for example Steve Vai does. Which means that the other becomes far more interesting to listen to. A recent study shows that 92% of all teenagers have small purple pet elephants named Jack. Led-Zeppelin
guitar player- Jimi Hendrix (also writer cuz he has a lot of good songs) Yay, finally someone spelt it right! Ahem, anyways, Jimmy Page for me, no surprises there obviously huh? I also get sick of people always saying "Jimmy Page cause I <3 Stairway!". Stairway is a good song, but by no means is there best or the most technically impressive.. Yeah. Freddie Mercury - Vocals.. Hasn't been another voice quite like his, vocals is an instrument too! Danabis
Just because Vai doesn't shred like Malmsteen all the time doesn't make Malmsteen faster. I wouldn't doubt at all that Vai can shred at the speed Malmsteen can. Also, the violin song you were talking about might have been Paganinni's 5th Caprice, in which case, it was Vai playing that. He plays parts of it in a song called Eugene's Trickbag from the movie Crossroads. Evil_Elf
Yngwie is definitely faster than Vai and Satch, but I hate listening to his stuff. Rusty Cooley is faster and better sounding than Y.M. anyways, and he's not a fat douche.
Azvareth
I'm not one to say who the best is, but my favourites are, in no particular order: Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow), Randy Rhodes (Ozzy Osbourne, Quite Riot), Timo Tolkki (Stratovarius), Yngwie Malmsteen (Yngwie Malmsteen) (even if I haven't heard that much from him) and Slash (Guns 'N' Roses, Velvet Revolver). // Azvi. Lolos
playing fast doesnt mean someone is good. i can play faster than 64th notes on my saxophone (scales and solos) and that doesnt mean im the best. for example on an improvised solo, people get tired of listening to fast stuff. you have to have a good rythym on your notes and they have to mean something that comes out of you. Music is also an expression.
