Login delay

I have a suggestion I'd like Tipit staff to consider.

The background is that my son plays RS, and so do I. We both log in to this forum, but my son is of the habit of mistyping his password more than once or twice. ::' This has the effect of locking out the PC on which he was trying to log in. :-k

I want to log in afterwards, but we both have to wait x minutes. <.<

Can you guys change this so that it only blocks a username and not the whole d*** PC?

Thanks.

Don't follow me. You might not make it.

If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator

I'm not an Administrator so I can't give an absolute answer, however I do manage my own little phpBB board on the side, so I could probably safely answer your question.

With the standard setup for the boards, no, what you ask would not be possible. The only field we have the ability to change is Max Login Attempts and then a Lock Out time. I presently am not aware of any mods to the phpBB system, however, that would allow for what you ask.

don't worry, you are going to "hell" anyway. wanna race to see who gets there first?

You don't need MODs when you have your own in house PHP coder (Albosky) that knows PHPbb like the back of his hand. It would be rather easy for anyone with a bit of prior knowledge in PHP and how PHPbb works to edit and implement this (as has been done to a lot of the Tip.It forums already).

That being said, I doubt it will happen. The entire reason for the lock out is in place is to prevent someone from hammering away at accounts trying to guess passwords. If you just lock out the username, whoever is guessing at passwords can just move on to guess a new accounts password, leaving the user he just tried locked out of their own username. It also leaves the 'hacker' free to just keep trying and trying as the names he tries get locked. Blocking the computer itself is a much better solution to stop password guessing and eliminates any intentional guessing of passwords to purposely lock people's accounts.

If I may make a suggestion: If the issue is your son mistyping his password, perhaps you should have him write it down somewhere (but keep it well hidden from everyone, of course). This way, if the issue is him forgetting how to spell his password or what exactly it was, then he can just look at the paper and have it right there.

If the issue is just that he's having problems typing it (i.e. he's a bad typist), then just suggest to him that he slows down and makes sure he types out the password correctly the first time, even if it takes him a little longer to do.

Scare him into not getting any Dessert unless he types his password correctly. Problem solved.

If he persists, threaten him with not getting Christmas Presents. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Don't let your Son get in the way of you not logging into TIF. Please, stay strong during these tough times. You've got my support!

I agree with darkblade986. This is just the kind of stuff I do when I've been away from sites like Tip.It for a while. Saves me headaches, saves Tip.It any headaches, and makes the world more happy for all of us.

Okay, Eelspremiers, I hope you're just being sarcastic and attempting to be funny. Otherwise... <*pulls out a giant bat*> ... Heh, Heh, Heh. I know what to do with those that go overboard.

No I'm being deadly serious (no pun intended). According to a 2005 scientific study which involved 500 Tip.iters, not being able to log into TIF for a short period of time, was shown to cause premature death.

But for the sake of your sarcasm radar, I'll put a nice one of these in >> :^o just to help it out with its detections.

Yeah... right... as if not being able to log into a forum for a week or two is going to cause that. Sounds more to me like they had worse problems in their minds that led to such an action.

Heck, I've got problems I've had since birth, but do you see me killing myself when the forums go down? NO. I'm smart enough to realize it will only be temporary, unless Tip.It leaves a set of notes on the front page of the main site, saying it will be down longer or may not be back for some reason. But I'm not gonna kill myself over it. -.-

Personally, though, I think you're just talking a stack of [long bleep - too much swearing] falseness that shouldn't even be thought of in the first place. <*slams the bat across Eelspremiers and knocks them out cold*>

You really take everything serious do you Devnull...

Not everything. Go check out some of my old forum posts back in the super-early days of the "You're Banned" Game thread, before someone had to pick the wrong darn thing to do.

At the moment, however, with the recent RS updates, I can be a bit unusually serious about stuff. Also, Eelspremiers said they were being serious, so... :P ...what do you expect me to think?

Given he pointed out it was a sarcastic reply, because he knew you're reply like this, we'd expect you to take it as a joke, but once again you have proven why nobody takes anything you say even remotely seriously anymore.

LOL  ... Okay, you're just funny, Cruiser.

However, I probably should have gotten the message from the " :^o " icon. Oh well. I'm probably too wound-up from the recent idiocy of Jagex in their most recent updates. -.-

<*Checks Eelspremiers head for any bruising, finds some, pulls out one of his array of special staffs, heals the internal damage and external damage, and then disappears out of the thread until later*>
