My First Pixel [on MS Paint]

Featured Replies

cartoons are not pixels

Anything made entirely with the pixel tool is "pixel art". It doesn't need to imitate realism or be cluttered with details to be called pixel art.

use the pencil tool, then after you draw something go back and touch up the lines so that rather than bold and choppy lookin it gets a cleaner look to it

id say read some guides and keep working on it

thanks to Etexbleu for the sig

I wouldn't call it a pixel necesarily, but I still ove the first one. Its different, its cool, and i like it. But its definiatly not the same kind of pixel as some of the really talented people on here. If you're really trying to improve, i suggest not using the paint bucket tool, like at all, and spend a bit more time on the background.

These inspired me to paint some (not-so-serious) cartoonish pictures. I think they're cool. :)

For us to give you effective CC, you'll need to tell us what sort of Pixel art you're straining to, because you looked as if you went for kind of half realism half cartoon. Either way stick with one, not try both in the same.

If you're gonna go for cartoons, go for a cartoon style as such. I think as cartoons go your Dharok thrusting his arms up in the air is awesome if not cute <3: , and is a great start if that's what you're going for. I suggest browsing a few websites (such as DeviantART) and look there. You can either do for gradual shading, which you can achieve by varying the percentage of two+ colours in a certain area (e.g. to go from black to white, you'll have to do 100% B, 0% W, 90% B, 10% W, etc.), while keeping your assortment of original colours to a minimum to show you can get other colours but only having a small choice to achieve them - if you can do that it's a true show of skill.

A second way I'd kind is vector shading or cel shading. In Vector shading, there are no graduations, or at least, there are distinct lines between each colour. Cel shading involves simply having one darker colour than the original; however, it's not that easier. There's a thin line between having cel shading make your pixel look professionally cartoony and making it look amateurish and that you have lacked to show any care to shading. Again, browsing a few websites will help you brush up on your skills.

As for realism, you should again look through a few websites, except this time look for pictures of still life, big or small. If you're struggling on textures, search for such and download that picture. Find a program to resize your image to something manageable - something like 100 pixels wide/tall? Using that as reference attempt to redraw it using only basic colours and using gradual shading as I explained before.

There's not much I can do except hint you in the right direction, but I wish you the best of luck achieving your desired results.

I <3 the first one

Why?

Cuz I laughed out loud.

It was cute!

Haha! I like your style, its like cartoonish and its really cool! Just work on the background and you got some good pixels! 9/10

no, he doesnt, From a artist (GFX maker) they arnt even NEAR 9/10, looks like he spent 5 - 10 mins on each. and used the paint bucket tool.

Okay. What to say,

First off it's "she".

Secondly, this is my first try. I'm sorry? Sorry i'm not an amazing person at paint. Sorry I can't go right off the bat and create signatures that make people's jaws drop. Okay. From what I knew, I created a signature from paint that I did spend a lot of time on. I didn't spend 5-10 minutes, I spent hours easily on these. I posted because I know i'm new at this, and I know tif has a really nice community and i've been watching the art gallery recently and the nice CC people give eachother. I'm really dissapointed in the way you reacted to this...

Like I said, i geuss i'm sorry i'm not an amazing "painter" for a lack of a better term.

Anyway, does anyone have any CC that they could give me (politely, please) to help me out?

im sorry i came across as a jerk, i really didnt mean to. and no ones GREAT their first attemp (my sig was my first pixel) but i make sigs. and know what im doing for the most part.

just keep at it, you WILL get good. just try to improve. try new things.

as for CC

you need more detail, shading. and work on the bodys of everyone.

No offense yaff2, but you are way too critical...and you are way to full of yourself. To be honest, the hair on your sig doesn't look like hair, it may have taken you some time, but I just don't care for your rudeness and the fact that you come across like you are some great artist, "From a artist (GFX maker)," it's really annoying. Not to mention, just because you don't like the style, doesn't mean it's wrong.

I like the style, it could be a little more clean with the lines, and for a first I do like them alot. Keep developing that style and I think you might have something great!

UPDATE 1:

Did a bit more work, made the work consistent (as far as black outlines go), i completely removed them.

I also did a lot of work with the grass, and both of the dirt colours. Next in line: the sky, the buildings in the background, the mountain the trees. Then i'll work some more on my character, and then add some more details in the foreground.

Not bad progress, if I do say so myself.

v2, better and worse IMO, the path needs more detail, grass looks alright, and the lightning needs some shading, other than that, im starting to like teh style,

thing you need to do more of is:

Shading and Texture. then you will be good.
