Yes guthans is VERY worth it if you like slayer, only as long as you can afford a whip and black mask to go along with it.

+1, but if your only doing barrows, I just wear very defensive armour and I manage 2 runs a trip with monks, no p pots or Guthans.

Guthans is an absolutely essential tool if you're serious about slaying. It's not useful for all of the monsters, but certainly for the majority of them. If it cost four times what it costs now.. it'd still be worth buying in my opinion.

A must have for all slayers.

I think I'm finally convinced too. I made it all the way to 82 slayer without it but I've got the cash, so why not?

But is there a guide or strategy for using it? It has a chance of healing every time or just when a special is used? The discription in the tip it combat section I believe is completely wrong or at least not completely right!

it says: "Infestation set effect

Melee attacks have a chance to drain health from your opponent on a 1:1 ratio with the damage you inflict."

There is no special as such... it just happens randomly. I tend to find I heal about every 6th-10th attack and heal for the amount of damage that I inflict.

Best strategy for using it I guess is to avoid using it on a monster that's nearly dead since it won't have much health to steal. Also, don't wait until your own health is nearly done before switching to the spear. It can take a while before you score a healing hit, and since the spear is two handed, you lose a large portion of your defence when your shield is unequiped.

Barrow's set effects aren't like a weapon specials. Instead of waiting until the bar fills, they just happen randomly (and I think that for some of them there is a little animation). When Guthan's happens, you'll get healed by how hard you hit.

these are probably stupid questions but they deteriorate even if you don't have all pieces on?

Just keep in inventory and switch over from regular armor when needed and switch back?

I assume this minimizes need to repair - how much is that?

All pieces decay while in use, whether or not you have full set.

Repair:

Weapon: 100k

Plate: 90k

Legs: 80k

Helmet: 60k

However, you can lower these costs by using a Player owned House, armour repair stand. Dependent on your smithing level.
