sa121
Well, this is a problem that has been around for a while, but has gotten worse recently. It seems whenever my computer is turned on, and is on my familys broadband network, the whole network slows down. My father, who has a masters degree in computer science or something like that, says that its Runescape that is bringing the whole network down, but I've pointed out I haven't even USED the internet yet, yet he says that cookies from it or something from Runescape directly is causing my internet to go down. Could this be true? If it is, what could I do to stop it? If it isn't, what might the problem be? Spyware? Thanks for your help, just ask if you need more information to figure out what is happening, becuase I want to figure this out already. War_Junky_91
Well he might be right. To be sure go to the "Tools" menu. Scroll down and click on "Interent Options" You should see a section labeled "Browsing History" right on the first tab. Click "Delete". You should then get another pop up with about 5 options of things to delete. I recomend deleting "Cookies", "Temporary Internet Files" (that one will take a while), and "Form Data". You can delete "History" if you want, but i think you might want to keep that. If that doesnt help your problem get a good virus scanner. Do NOT download any free scanners. If you have the yahoo toolbar the virus scanner on there is decent even though it is norton. (Full blown Norton version is absolutely horrible). Thats all i can think of right now. Mamong
RuneScape won't bring about a huge lag, even when it's running I used to surf the net and play and my dad could use his computer on the 'net with no problems. May be a bit of spyware/adware. Download Ad-Aware and run a scan, that should clean things up. Do a Virus Scan as well to be on the safe side. Also, try cleaning up your hard drive. A cluttered hard drive may slow your computer down, but it won't affect the network at all. I can't see RuneScape slowing down your entire network unless your on an extremely slow connection. If your dad has a Masters in Computer Science, surely he'd know a bit about network traffic and lag. :-s [Tip.It Mod][Retired][Add your Steam name here!]

Oh whoops, sorry, forgot to mention I DO do that, I just click delet all about once a week just to keep my computer running a tad faster. Thanks for the input though, I'm currently running a scan with ad Aware and Spybot S&D. Anyways, as I said before, I'm currently running a virus/spyware scan, I'll see what comes up. Also, could the fact I use SwiftSwitch when I play RS do anything about it? Thanks. Mamong
Even using SwiftSwitch, you shouldn't be making much lag in your network. I'd say wait for those scans to come in and see what they return. I'd take Junky's advice and clear your cache/cookies. What speed is your internet? Head over to Speedtest and report the findings back here as long as what speed your internet is supposed to be. Eh, thing is though, he IS good with computers; he does keep in touch with most stuff, and can fix most problems from expiernce. And thanks with getting back to me with the SwiftSwitch thing. Mamong
I can't see where your lagging then, that's a great speed with a low ping, my net is much slower than that and I used to play RS/surf with little lag. Must be something on your computer then, I point to adware/cluttered hard drive/memory hogs. Hit Ctrl > Alt > Delete and see what is running. Use common sense, but any NON SYSTEM PROCESS running is normally fine to close. Look for ones using lots of memory and close them off. You've got to use common sense, head to ProcessLibrary and search in some of them and it will tell you what they are and you can them tell if they are safe to close off or not. jackal_55
runescape shouldn't be doing anything, my internet (supposedly 512K, although it tuns at about 53k at the best of times) can load youtube videos without any change when im playing RS. most likely you need to clear to caches, run a scan, and if its slowing down the entire network maybe de-frag your computer, although im not sure if that will do anything. nudist hippy vegan elves who inexplicably wear leather. Cruiser
The only time RS ever users more than 5kb/s is when it's updating files at loading. Once you log in, 99% of the time it is using less than 1kb/s with the occasional [bleep]e to 3 or 4. The only way RS could come even remotely close to bringing down your home network is if it was older than your dad's CS degree, and even then, it's an extremely long shot. I'd be looking into your network equipment (testing it for failures), how it's set up and would be scanning everything on the network with the customary AV and spyware tools. Work your way through the network, one by one, testing each machine and connection till you find the problem.
