Greatsilverwyrm
I know that you guys hate topic titles like that, but, I can't think of a better way to describe it.. On my keyboard I have about a dozen "multimedia" buttons that I can assign to open programs or perform an action or whatever. I have one of them set to lock the computer.. However, every once in a while I'll come back, and the computer has either logged me off, or restarted, or something, but I have to log back on. When that happens, usually I get the "loading personal settings.." message for a seemingly indefinite time, without me actually logging on, so I have to restart for it to work. This happened to me last night, and when I logged on, every few seconds my computer would hang for a few seconds. I staked out the process manager but couldn't find anything out of the ordinary, or anything that had a large CPU usage when my computer would hang.. I locked my computer after messing around for a while, and went to bed. When I woke up this morning it had done the log-off or whatever thing again.. So, I restarted, got back in, and.. It took a ridiculously long time for everything to start up. This has happened several of last few times I've rebooted. So..any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. Using WINXP SP2, Fully Updated. Don't know really what other info would be helpful to you, so, ask and ye shall recieve.
zonda
Mmm, the best solution I can come up with is rather then using the shortcut button, place a shortcut on your desktop and link it to I know I have seen it done before... In fact I think I saw it at blackviper's site? Not sure but maybe someone else knows what I am talking about Then when you want to lock it just use windows + D and double click the lock shortcut  ... fireblast99
I actualy had a simmilar problem with my computer. It turned out that the CPU cooling fan was clogged with dust and by CPU was overheating, causing the computer to shut down. You might want to see if you can find a CPU temp readout program, or just take the fan off the processor and take a look.

Greatsilverwyrm
I scan for both spyware and viruses regularly. I have a program that gives me temps and it's not a heat issue. My memory is fine, if it wasn't I'd be having other problems and they'd be more frequent. I don't know why you're asking about a BSOD, as I told you, the problem occurs while I'm away. If I was there to see what happened I'd most likely know what the problem was.. Off topic, can_t_escape, overheating can indeed make your computer restart, I've had it happen before. fireblast99
so does this happen when you dont lock your computer or lock it the normal way?

Hannibal
I locked my computer after messing around for a while, and went to bed. When I woke up this morning it had done the log-off or whatever thing again.. Have you tried poking the windows error / info logs to see if there's anything relevant in there? (Right click My Computer, Manage). Those may give a clue as to why the hell it's logging you off. Also, you may want to try and close as many stuff as possible (or simply use safemode), lock the comp, go to bed, and see if the same thing happens (it could also be a program shutting the comp off, theoretically) That's all I can come up with for now... I'll try to think of something better when I have more time...
Bmw
Well first of all, go through device manager and update all your drivers. I'm thinking that its either a problem there which should be fixed after updated, or a software problem. If your drivers are all updated already, which I doubt they are, then have you installed anything lately? What virus scanner are you currently using? It could be as simple as reinstalling your antivirus program. So you've ruled out an overheating issue? The last option I have is that its a virus or trojan, but you are scanning regularly, so I dunno. It couldn't hurt to boot up in safemode and give it another try, with diferent antivirus programs, could it? Also, say you leave your computer in safemode. Will the same lockup occurr? You may also want to check your calendar, to see if you have anything scheduled daily when your computer locks. I remembered the exact same thing used to happen when my Norton Antivirus would randomly scan my computer, which is why I suggested a reinstall of your antivirus program above. Hope I helped, Bmw
Greatsilverwyrm
The weirdest thing is that it doesn't do it consistantly, there's a good half the time when it doesn't happen..
Mercifull
The weirdest thing is that it doesn't do it consistantly, there's a good half the time when it doesn't happen.. Maybe you can make a log of what programs are running when you "lock" your pc so that we can narrow down what process could be causing this problem. cant_t_escape: can you please stop giving wrong information to people, it can be very dangerous. thanks. Greatsilverwyrm
I've done a log and gone over it myself, and haven't found anything I haven't been using since before this started happening. I'll post a log when I get home, though, and see if you find anything.. I have checked the logs and there aren't, or don't seem to have been any errors. I'll try and do that, Matt.. I have another theory, though.. I thought that perhaps one of my dogs came in and bumped the restart button, but, it happened once or twice when I'm sure my room was shut, and that doesn't explain not being able to log-in when it happens.. Okay okay, Once maybe, but as many times as you've had it happen I have hard time putting the blame on a poor little doggy  Has this been happening a long time, or did it start just the other night. If it just started, is there any settings you changed dealing with windows or have you installed anything new? To be honest, you've got me puzzled  ... Greatsilverwyrm
I'm really starting to wonder what the hell is going on, because this is the single most inconsistant problem I've ever had.. It doesn't always happen, I can't find anything else abnormal other than the wierd stuff that's happening.. I'm boggled..

Vape
Control Panel -> Display -> Screen saver. Fiddle with the screensaver settings and more importantly the power saving settings. Also, look in the advanced settings for your graphics card to see if it has its own settings also. I suspect your problem may be caused by the system partially shutting down and then trying to do stuff. Also, check your scheduled tasks. If there's any of them that are set to the middle of the night or when your computer is idle, then disable them and see if the problem persists. Where the bloody hell are you? Greatsilverwyrm
Nothing in Scheduled tasks, checked through power settings already, can't find any GPU-specific power options.. This is odd.
