How to End Processes?

Featured Replies

Well, I recently went down to Help Me Computers! to get my Desktop worked on. The internet would shut down every other time I logged off. But anyways, I told him I was trying to "speed" it up by taking off some startup programs on Run>Msconfing>Startup. He told me not to do this as it was a way of fixing the problem, but a very sloppy way. So as I don't want to do that now, how can I cut down on the number of process running? I'd give you a picture, but the laptop is unable to screen shot. But I went to Ctr+Alt+Delete>Task Manager>Processes. I have 71 running, unlike my desktop which is running on 24. Anyway I can fix this? It is also very slow on startup.

I am running Windows Vista 32-bit, 1GB RAM, Intel Core2 CPU, T5200 @ 1.60GHz 1.60GHz.

Here is a list of common windows processes that should help you determine what you don't need.

Mainly though, you should be able to terminate any process under your username using the task manager.

No, vista is not the enemy, he/she just needs more RAM since Vista uses like 700 Mb or so memory.

But 71 processes, that's an awfull lot! One trick is to do the startup thing on msconfig again, looking on google what the names on there means, and untick those that are not needed, that's what I do. Same with the processes in the Ctrl+Alt+Del (or faster way on vista: Ctrl+Shift+Escape), look at what the processes are on google. When I start the computer, I stop processes to free up some resources.

Stopping processes via the task manager is not a solution, the next time you boot they will all still be there. I would advise the following:

1. Uninstall any programs you don't use.

2. Check the startup folder on your start menu and remove anything you don't need.

3. This next one can be tricky if you're not too happy with editing the registry, but these two keys are where most programs are launched from:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run

Before deleteing any entries within the run sections, I would back them up by right clicking Run, and select export.

Please note you can seriously screw up your PC by messing about with the registry, and I take no respocibility if you delete the wrong thing. ONLY remove entries from within the above two kays, anything else could be serious.

What do getting rid of them do? Oh well getting rid of them now.

Btw Vista is your enemy it takes 1 gig ram and I was working on a Vista laptop at work experience today and 6/10 task manager wouldn't come up. it froze dream weaver 3 times and about 10 times I couldn't access the network...

It ends processes that take up your RAM I'm guessing. The less you have the better. My experience with Vista is a good one. It runs pretty smoothly, and I've never had it freeze up for something I hadn't caused. It may be a bit slower than my Desktop, with the same amount of RAM, but for all the different highlights I think it's worth it.

I've got to agree, there is nothing wrong with Vista. This laptop I'm working on isn't all that high spec (T2330 Dual Core 1.6ghz, 2gb RAM, Go7300) but it runs Vista very well. I can have over 8 windows running smoothly. The trick is RAM, you need 2gb, but with RAM prices being so cheap today, it's a worthy investment.

You can tgo into the task manager and delete any processes that arent "LOCAL SERVICE" or "SYSTEM", OR explorer[Caution: Executable File]

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

vista isnt always the enemy, but it kills computers with less than 2 Gigs of ram

the one gig of ram might be the problem. can you run any other programs?

Process Explorer is a free utility from Microsoft that is very helpful in determining what processes can be ended. It can give you much more detail on each process, and also tells you what will happen if you end any given process.
